RE: What's your top feature request for FrameMaker 11?

2012-06-08 Thread rinch
If XML is ever going to become truly mainstream,
Adobe has to make creating XML outputs just as easy as creating a PDF.
Adobe's marketing department can hype the advantages of XML all they want—current
XML workflow's demand too many resources to be cost effective for most
users. Adobe needs to make XML outputs as simple and cost-effective
as Save As PDF, while maintaining authoring capabilities that are just
as simple and intuitive as is the current unstructured authoring environment.
I believe this can be accomplished. However, Adobe engineers have much
work to do, perhaps including with some paradigm shifts regarding the basic
authoring process, to accomplish the goal of a truly easy, flexible XML
environment.

Re: FYI: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-08 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
FYI -

Robert, I respect your opinion on FM7.x. I have observed that in isolated cases
a single person or small advanced group of advanced users are sometimes capable
of exercising enough discipline to continue satisfactory production with
version FM7.x , which was last updated 7 years ago.

There *are*, however, definite limitations with FM7.x vs. FM10 that affect most
people, e.g. no Unicode support, no rich graphics, more time-consuming steps in
locating and removing format overrides, and a more challenging path to output
to ePubs (via TCS.) For many of us, changing demands on our deliverables are
not met by code that was written 7 to 10 years ago.

There is a long list of nearly 50 enhancements to FrameMaker that have taken
place over the past 10 years, listed at the *bottom* of the call to action
webpage below. I'll use the full URL, just scroll to the bottom:

http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/fm-upgrade.html

There are 2 short blogs that anyone in a mid-sized workgroup with FM7.x should
consider reviewing.
(NOTE: edit line breaks in the full URLs below before copy/paste into browser
address field.)

(a) Blog with links to 4 Captivate videos:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2012/05/videos-5-compelling-reasons-to-upgrade-from-framemaker-7-x-to-framemaker-10.html

(b) Blog highlighting timesaving features for FM7.x users who are not
interested in structure:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2012/06/what-if-you-use-framemaker-7-x-and-dont-want-dita-upgrade-to-fm-10.html

I hope many in the group will share this information with their contacts who
are not fully satisfied with FrameMaker 7.x, as this such FM users to upgrade
FrameMaker to FrameMaker, rather than FrameMaker to the full Tech Comm Suite.

For those interested, time is running out as there are now only 8 days left to
take advantage of the promotion. This topic becomes a dead issue a week from
tomorrow.

I will step aside from this topic.

The offer is Adobe FrameMaker 7.X customers can receive a savings of
30% on the FULL version of FrameMaker 10 software purchased through
Adobe Customer Service, or a participating reseller worldwide.

Adobe charges $999, 30% off that is $699. Amazon charges $634.

Personally I'd stick with 7 unless I had a specific reason to upgade.
Adobe introduced a lot of bugs with the UI makeover in FM9 and if
anything they got worse in FM10. The last new feature they added that
I have any use for was the multiple undo in 7.2.

Find/Change Character Format Override in FM10

2012-06-08 Thread Robert Lauriston
Thanks to Craig Ede for pointing me to the new FM10 Find/Change
Character Format Override feature.

It's pretty crude. You can't specify a specific character format
override to search for, the way you can when simply searching for
character formats, so you can't find Italic or Bold overrides.

It would be more consistent with other entries on the Find drop-down
item if it were called Any Character Format Override.

As is, the only use I can see for it would be to go through manually
and fix each override individually.

Who does Adobe talk to when designing these features?

Frame RoboHelp Web app

2012-06-08 Thread Amy Super
This is a little bit more of a RoboHelp question than a FrameMaker
question, but since we're starting with Frame I thought I'd throw it out
to this group.

We're looking at a process flow of going from FrameMaker to RoboHelp for
online help, so that we have single sourcing for PDFs and some form of
online help. I've done this before at my last job, with output to
Microsoft HTML Help for an installed application. So doing context
sensitive work was a matter of a developer handing me a file with
MapIDs, and me hooking everything up in RoboHelp.

But now, at my current position, we're looking to use the RoboHelp
output for a web-based application.

Does anyone have thoughts on:

1) What RoboHelp output formats work well for web-based apps?

2) Are there resources out there that describe how to get the
context-sensitive part of it to work? Thankfully I wouldn't be doing the
programming, but I'd need to point our developers to resources.

Thanks!

If you want to get rid of overrides en masse (and indiscriminately), you

There are also inexpensive plug-ins from Silicon Prairie that will

Unresolved X-refs with conditional text

2012-06-08 Thread Nancy Allison
Hi, all.

I've just inserted a lot of conditional text into multiple files in a book. I'm
using FM 10 in a Win 7 environment.

When I update the book:

1. The Book error log file lists multiple unresolved cross-references.

2. I click a link in the log to go to the broken xref. FM jumps to the correct
chapter but doesn't land on a link. Nothing is highlighted. Every link on the
page works.

3. I use Find/Unresolved Crossreferences to search within that file, but
nothing turns up.

4. I use Create List of Unresolved Crossreferences at the book level; that file
is empty.

I have two questions:

1. Anybody know what's going on?

2. Do I dare ignore this -- figure it's an artifact of conditional text -- but
since all the links I've tested on the targeted pages WORK, maybe I can just
ignore these stupid error messages? I'm under the gun to get this done.

I could just go ahead, create the PDF, and manually click all links in all
pages indicated in the original error log . . .

Thanks for all insights.

Re: FYI: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-08 Thread Alan Litchfield
All,

As a matter of interest. I went to the page on the original post. Noting that
the only options for upgrade were from 8 or 9, I saw that at the bottom of the
page there was a link for more information. In this country, we have no
reseller network that services upgrades. The last time I upgraded I had to buy
from Singapore.

Therefore, I have sent an email requesting information from Adobe (the third
link IIRC).

*I have had no response.* I cannot ring the 1800 number because they do not
work in this country. I cannot use the special links because this is not US or
Canada.

Looks like I will be missing out on this offer because Adobe can't get its act
together.

Not surprised really.

Alan

PS I would be interested to see a link to the special offer on Amazon.

Re: Find/Change Character Format Override in FM10

2012-06-08 Thread Robert Lauriston
Yes, but I'm cleaning up a 1000-page doc that has been updated by
many hands over the years. I need to look at each mistake and decide
what correct tags are, if any. Some of the mistakes are pretty
creative, e.g. somebody had a habit of accidentally formatting whole
paragraph with character tags and then using overrides to get it back
to normal.

FM10 can remove all character, paragraph, or table overrides in a book
with a single Change command, but I can't see that being useful very
often.

RE: What's your top feature request for FrameMaker 11?

2012-06-08 Thread David Artman
Could you please explain what you mean by this:

 From: ri...@inficon.com

If XML is ever going to become truly mainstream, Adobe has to make
creating XML outputs just as easy as creating a PDF.

I don't think I've encountered a need for an XML deliverable, yet. Are
you thinking in terms of shared structured content between isolated
content silos or between incompatible data repositories, or similar?

My understanding of the FM XML implementation is that it is a SOURCE
format, not a deliverable format. AS A SOURCE, it can also be
delivered to other organizations, for their integration needs. But XML
is really more a place from which content transformations BEGIN, not
where they end.

Further, I don't think Adobe's adoption or not of XML as a development
format will have any impact on XML becoming mainstream. It is a given,
if the World Wide Web Consortium has any say in the matter; and many
major players are almost totally wedded to it already.

Adobe can merely choose whether or not their tools are competitive in
terms of power and cost.

But maybe I misunderstand your meaning of XML output...?

Subject: Unresolved X-refs with conditional text

Multiple Columns

2012-06-08 Thread Robert Leif
I have been unable to produce a 2 column poster from a single column page. I
changed the size of the page to 24 by 44 inches. Subsequently, I changed the
column layout to two columns separated by 0.5 inch. I set balance columns to
yes and then no. The flow wanders from column to column rather than first
filling the left column and then the right column. It also appears that
often, I now cannot increase the width of the page from 8.5 or 12 inches to
24 inches. This two column layout worked with FrameMaker 9 and its
precursors. Do I need to reinstall FrameMaker 9? Since the last versions of

PDF bookmarks anomaly

2012-06-08 Thread Helen Borrie
Hi group,
I have a very large book (40 chapters, 14 appendices + glossary, circa 1100
pp.) in FM 8 unstructured that I'm printing to PDF via the Adobe printer. All
goes perfectly except for one anomalous thing in Bookmarks, that I can't seem
to fix!

First a picture, then a few more words...
Emacs!

All of the bookmarks that should be under Chapter 38 are appearing at the
bottom of Chapter 37's bookmarks. The para selections and levels in Ch. 38's
PDF props are identical to the others'. The TOC is correct.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks,

Three responses privately from Roger Shuttleworth, Samantha Lizak and Penelope

chapters 37 and 38. When I popped them both into clean templates, problem
solved!

Frame > RoboHelp > Web app

Thanks!

If you want to get rid of overrides en masse (and indiscriminately), you
can import formats from the current document into itself, selecting
Remove Other Format/Layout Overrides. (No Undo; back up files first!)

There are also inexpensive plug-ins from Silicon Prairie that will
remove char/pgf overrides file- or book-wide.

Find/Change Character Format Override in FM10

2012-06-08 Thread Robert Lauriston
Yes, but I'm cleaning up a >1000-page doc that has been updated by
many hands over the years. I need to look at each mistake and decide
what correct tags are, if any. Some of the mistakes are pretty
creative, e.g. somebody had a habit of accidentally formatting whole
paragraph with character tags and then using overrides to get it back
to normal.

FM10 can remove all character, paragraph, or table overrides in a book
with a single Change command, but I can't see that being useful very
often.

2012-06-08 Thread Robert Lauriston
That's exactly what WebHelp is for. At least with RoboHelp 9 and
FrameMaker 10, it's easy to set up and works well, though the output
options are not as flexible as I'd like. I have a script for
automatically generating both PDF and WebHelp I can send you.

The CSH process for developers is described in the docs:

FYI: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-08 Thread Robert Lauriston
I think I know all the features added in FM 8 through 10. I think the
Find Character Format Overrides might be the first one I've found
useful and there are cheap utilities that do the same. Most of the
functionality has not changed since 5.5.6 and many features feel like
they were designed for Windows 386. It's shameful, really.

If I needed Unicode support, I'd take FM8 rather than lose
productivity every day to FM 9/10's keyboard-hostile and buggy UI.

What's your top feature request for FrameMaker 11?

2012-06-08 Thread David Artman
Could you please explain what you mean by this:

> From: rinch at Inficon.com
>
> If XML is ever going to become truly mainstream, Adobe has to make
> creating XML outputs just as easy as creating a PDF.

I don't think I've encountered a need for an XML deliverable, yet. Are
you thinking in terms of shared structured content between isolated
content silos or between incompatible data repositories, or similar?

My understanding of the FM XML implementation is that it is a SOURCE
format, not a deliverable format. AS A SOURCE, it can also be
"delivered" to other organizations, for their integration needs. But XML
is really more a place from which content transformations BEGIN, not
where they end.

But maybe I misunderstand your meaning of "XML output"...?

Unresolved X-refs with conditional text

2012-06-08 Thread Magnus, Thomas C
Nancy,

On a related issue, FM logs unresolved cross-ref errors for conditional
cross-refs in text insets when PDFing, even if the condition on the doc
containing the inset is set to hide the cross-ref and the cross ref does not
appear in the subscriber doc. Similarly, Find unresolved cross-refs does not
fine any unresolved cross-refs, because they are hidden.

> 2. Do I dare ignore this -- figure it's an artifact of conditional text

I think so.
