FM 11 Line numbering bug

2012-10-30 Thread Rob Shell
**BUG**
There seems to be a troublesome problem with the new line numbering option
in FM 11.
If you use line numbering and use a side head for paragraphs, the text to
the right or left of the side head disappears on the screen. The print
output via PDF is fine, but the GUI is broken.
I am very glad that Adobe has included line numbering as all lawyers use it
and therefore a new market share, previously dominated by WordPerfect 10+ ,
is available.
However, we must get it right.
Concise problem statement:
Steps to reproduce bug:
 1. Fill a paragraph with text
 2.Create a sidehead with text say 2012
 3. Request line numbering
 Results:
Expected results: Text to the right or left of sidehead disappears on
screen. This bug does not affect the pdf creation

FrameMaker Find/Change Behavior

2012-10-30 Thread Shmuel Wolfson

Question: What's the best thing about starting FrameMaker in the morning?

Answer: When you do a search, you actually know where the cursor is
going to be when the Find/Change dialog box opens.

Does anyone know if the inconsistent behavior of the Find/Change dialog
box was fixed in 11? I might upgrade just for that.

If anyone from Adobe is reading this, PLEASE make the cursor always be
in the 'Find' text box when the Find/Change dialog box opens, the same
as it is in Adobe Reader. Is this really so hard to do? Sorry for being
so blunt, but I didn't have a coffee yet.

OT: Need localization help

2012-10-30 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello Framers,

I am rewriting my ImportFormatsSpecial plugin as an ExtendScript script for
FrameMaker 10 and higher. The dialog box controls are labeled based on an
XML file. I need this XML file localized into another language so users can
see how it works. If you can do this, I will give you a copy of the script
when it is finished. Please contact me off-list if you are interested.
Please let me know what language you would be translating to. Thank you very

A google search of "font zodiac sign" turns up a number of links; I'm
sure you could modify the terms and find many more. Here's one:

"ASTROGADGET is a True Type font which contains all the star sign
symbols (glyphs) and planets plus other astrology related symbols"

HTML mapping pages BLOAT

2012-10-30 Thread Rob Shell
Dear Framers:
I need some help. My rather old files from FM6 and onwards are behaving
awkwardly when read into FM 11 (patched).
The problem is that I have far too many HTML mapping reference pages. I have
learnt that the max number of ref pages is 100, but the HTML bloat is
pushing it over the top.
I am working in unstructured framemaker, not using HTML AT ALL.
I have tried fixing the template file but this only helps a little.
Anyone else have this problem?
I am hoping this is my BIG problem with these files. Results in massive
sluggishness, elephantiasis I call it.

If you're not using FM's built-in HTML export, you shouldn't have HTML mapping
pages. Delete them.

Freiends,
the only thing I could do with my knowledge and tools is:
- extract all images (icons) from owlres.dll, fmres.dll and fmcustom.dll to get
their names.
- use some of these icons (by name) in tool bar xml-files.
The icons are there in a png-notation.
fmcustom.dll now also contains png images, no more bmp bit maps.
I have pdfs with all the images and names, see
http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker60.html

You may look into http://www.daube.ch/docu/files/etb-customising-fm.pdf and

Dialogs from owlres.dll can be seen in a resource editor, the items can be
changed - but i have not
tested whether they can be 'saved/compiled' again ...
Dialogs are split into two resources in the Adam and Eve container (yes that's
the names of them). The
items look (for me) like c-programs. If you open owlres.dll in a hex editor you
see this text starting
about in the middle of the file.

This OWL stuff is Adobe special - i have not found any explanation of the term
owl. Googling leads to
quite old documents about Borland ObjectWindows containing this abbreviation in
number - but is it
this?

To sum up: I have no idea how to modify the owl-dialogs.

OWL Interface Resources

2012-10-30 Thread Rick Quatro
I did manage to make the Show Element Context dialog larger for FrameMaker
10. Here is how I did it.

1) I opened a copy of fminit/fmdlg.dll with a resource editor. I used
ResourceHacker.
2) I navigated to Dialog\ELEM_CTX\1033 and opened it.
3) I dragged the dialog and its list boxes to make them bigger and
repositioned the Display Designer button to the bottom.
4) I clicked the Compile Script button at the top of the window, and saved
and closed the file.
5) After backing up my original fminit/fmdlg.dll, I copied the modified one
to the fminit folder.
6) After restarting FrameMaker, I can display and use the bigger Show
Element Context dialog box.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very
much.

astrological symbols as fonts

2012-10-30 Thread David Artman
Twelve Zodiac signs are in Wingdings:
^_`abcdefghi

But you probably want a font that specializes in all of it, so:
http://www.astrosense.net/downloads.html

Specifically:
http://www.astrosense.net/fonts/starfont.zip

I wouldn't bother to make Frame drawing objects (on Ref pages or
wherever) if I was hoping to use the symbols in an equation or otherwise
manipulate them with styles. Conversely, if you want multi-color icons
or some-such, you'll have to make drawings (anywhere) and import them as
necessary (Ref Pages, for style calls; in Background frames, for headers
and footers; in Anchor Frames, for ad hoc usage; etc.).

One dark, stormy day, I began a new contract.

In short order, I was in charge of a six-dimensional array of

accessed almost exclusively via iPad.

I only have to customize this Dread Packet of Potentiality three or four
