Ugh. I assume you need consecutive page numbering, bookwide TOC, links,

To do this, you'd futz the page numbering in Word so each file started on the

I cannot combine the PDFs as each external document goes to a different
chapter. I'd have to futz the page numbers 25 times. That's not the hard
part...I'd then have to manually edit the PDF output of the book to merge
into the deliverableya know...this might be a last-resort
optioncreate a place holder, then use Acrobat to replace pages.
hmm...let me think about this.

Re: Incorporating external documents containing tables, into a book

2013-03-08 Thread Art Campbell
If the Word content is stable and you can lock it down, I'd try:

   1. Save as RTF
   2. Import it into Frame, maybe using the Japanese RTF import filter (I
havean't tried that in 11 yet) if the regular RTF can't cope.
   3. Save Frame files out as MIF to clean them up,
   4. Open and manually break the tables to get the pagination correct. I
suspect it'll mean one short table segment per page, but you can fudge the
   numbering if necessary.

The comparable product ever since has been Acrobat/Adobe Reader. You can

Incorporating external documents containing tables, into a book

2013-03-08 Thread rebecca officer
Hi John

Ugh. I assume you need consecutive page numbering, bookwide TOC, links,
bookmarks etc?

I don't know a good solution, but one ugly workaround is to combine the files
at the PDF stage instead of the FM stage.

To do this, you'd futz the page numbering in Word so each file started on the
desired page, create 8-page FM "placeholder" chapters in the FM book, make your
PDFs from FM and Word, use Acrobat to replace the "placeholder" pages with the
correct pages, and manually fix links and bookmarks.

Cheers
Rebecca

Hi, guys...long time.

Anyway...I have a book that when printed, comes out at over 900 pages and
is composed of about 300 files.

I have 25 8-page documents that I created in Word that I need to include in
the book. I can supply them in either Word or PDF. However, the issue is
that each Word document is a single table with tables inside of the tables
and they don't come into the FM well because FM doesn't break rows between
pages..and since each 8 page document is one table (PLEASE don't ask...its
a battle I've been fighting since October), the eight pages just run down
off the bottom of the first imported page.

Any ideas? I also have the issue of working in a locked down environment,
so installing other software is not an option. BTW...I'm on FM11.

FYI, importing all 200 pages of the PDF at once could be done with
FrameScript. If you are interested in exploring this further, please contact

2013-03-08 Thread John Posada
I cannot combine the PDFs as each external document goes to a different
chapter. I'd have to futz the page numbers 25 times. That's not the hard
part...I'd then have to manually edit the PDF output of the book to merge
into the deliverableya know...this might be a last-resort
optioncreate a place holder, then use Acrobat to replace pages.
hmm...let me think about this.

Incorporating external documents containing tables, into a book

2013-03-08 Thread Art Campbell
If the Word content is stable and you can lock it down, I'd try:

   1. Save as RTF
   2. Import it into Frame, maybe using the Japanese RTF import filter (I
havean't tried that in 11 yet) if the regular RTF can't cope.
   3. Save Frame files out as MIF to clean them up,
   4. Open and manually break the tables to get the pagination correct. I
suspect it'll mean one short table segment per page, but you can fudge the
   numbering if necessary.

2013-03-08 Thread Anderson, Ben
Hi Christin,

There used to be a product called FrameViewer that functioned much like Adobe
Reader, but for Frame files (obviously).

It was a LONG time ago when I used it (Frame v. 2 or 3). Not sure if it, or a
comparable product is still available. You might contact Adobe and see.

I believe Alan is correct about FM 5.5.6, and I'm pretty sure FrameViewer was
discontinued before FM 6 came out.

The "comparable product" ever since has been Acrobat/Adobe Reader. You can
easily create a PDF of any FM document, complete with working links, and anyone
can view it with the free Reader. So FrameViewer didn't seem to serve any
useful purpose.

On behalf of Adobe ...

There hasn't been a FrameViewer product for many years, dating back to the era
of FrameMaker 5.5.6 or so. And Richard is correct. PDF became Adobe's final
form file format for viewing content from any Adobe application via our free
Adobe Reader.
