Modifying Image Paths

2013-04-24 Thread Judy Bragg
This message was originally HTML formatted. View in a HTML capable client to
see the original version.\r\n\r\nMy company is soon to begin working with
translation software.
Until now, my images have been filed in a chapter subfolder. Since ourimages
will not be localized, I'm moving the images to a location wherethey can be
accessed by each language by the same path. That way, Iadd/change an image once
and everything updates.

The downside...I have to update the paths for all of the images in mycurrent
English documentation. Redefining the path for each image (orevery few images)
as the interface asks for it is proving verytime-consuming and tedious.

I'm using TCS4 (FM11) on a Win7 PC. My documents typically have textinsets,
images by reference, cross-references and index markers.

This morning, I thought I'd investigate whether the Insets pod would be of any
help. I've never used it for anything before
and, curiously, when I opened it today there's nothing in it. (Not eventhe
toolbar pictured in the Help files.) The same thing happens withthe Reference
pod. The markers pod is populated.

Trying to get anything in the Insets and Reference pods, I've triedselecting a
single inset, the full document content, the full bookcontent...nothing!

If anyone has suggestions to speed things along, using pods or by some other
method, I'd love to hear from you!
Thanks!

You could test this to see if it works before you actually do it on your
production copies...

Open the FM file as a MIF.

Do a find and replace on the file path name.

Resave as an FM file.

It's been a long time since I looked at MIFs and what they can do, but that
approach might be an option.

This may help; it's similar to Bruce Foster's Archive plug-in:

Re: Modifying Image Paths

2013-04-24 Thread Mike Wickham
You can use the free Archive or Book Packager script to do this. It
moves all graphics to a single directory. You can find it here:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/07/create-a-book-packager-using-extendscript.html
Be sure to get v2, at the script attached link. The original script
can be found here link, as I recall, linked to a version that had a bug
in it.

RE: Convert A3 to A4 format

2013-04-24 Thread Rod Fee
Hi team,

I have a novel that I set up with several master pages for different files.

The majority of these have the following frames:

-Footer
-Three text boxes that flow to following pages
-A header column for each text column

I originally set it up as A3 because I thought there would otherwise not be
enough room for meaningful amount of text in each frame on each page.

I was wrong. Now I want to make it all A4.

When I select the files and try to change the page size to A4 it tells me
the column sizes will be all wrong - not entirely sure how to fix this
easily. Any clues?

Regards,
Rod Fee

RE: Convert headings to destinations in PDF

2013-04-24 Thread Harvey, Peggy
Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all of the responses to my query. The mystery has finally been
solved: The tool used was AutoBookmark by Evermap. Apparently the person
created the bookmarks in FrameMaker, then used AutoBookmark on the PDF side to
delete the bookmarks, recreate them and create named destinations for the new
bookmarks. AutoBookmark converts periods and spaces into underscores and
truncates names to 32 characters for HTML compatibility.

For the record -- I don't recommend this method since it introduces a lot of
post-processing work on the PDF side. But at least now I know how it was done.

Thanks,

Peggy

Use FM's strengths in templates. Don't try to alter your current
document layout; create a new template with the layout you need and
import the page layouts from the template into the existing documents.

Re: TOC of document names in a book

2013-04-24 Thread Stuart Rogers

Hi team,

So I have a whole lot of documents in one book.

I want to insert a table of contents (Add/Table of Contents)

I want that TOC to include the file names of the various documents in their
order and with their page numbers that they start on.

The options for what to include in the TOC do not seem to include the file
names of the documents themselves.

Any way of doing this and including their page number automatically or is it
something I will have to manually produce and update?

Thanks in advance,

Rod Fee

As you've noticed, TOC generation allows you to select paragraphs with
specific tags for inclusion. If you put your file name (best to use the
system variable) in a uniquely tagged paragraph, you can select that pgf
tag for inclusion in the TOC.

I'm not sure why you would want to do this; normally the chapter title
is the most meaningful entry in a TOC. If you make your chapter titles
the same as your file names (or vice versa), the problem goes away. If
you must use a file name that differs from the chapter title but don't
want it to appear on the page, you'll have to fudge it by putting the
file name variable into a uniquely tagged pgf on the first page of the
file, with characteristics that make it invisible (e.g., 2 pt font,
colour white, or some other colour that you then designate as Don't
Print in the color definition). I'm not sure what the implications are
for PDF generation in the latter case; in the former (colour white), the
text will become visible if it is selected in the PDF (reverse highlighted).

FM 11/RH10 Multiscreen HTML Output - making changes to the default Desktop output

2013-04-24 Thread Martinek, Carla
Ok, I've been trying to find this answer in the RoboHelp and FrameMaker help
all morning, and not having any luck, so I'll throw it out to the group. It's
been a decade-plus since I worked in RoboHelp, so don't remember much. My
source content is in FM11.

I know what I want to do, just not how to make it happen. I want to use one of
the skins that shipped with RH10 in the Multiscreen HTML 5 output (for the
WebHelp/Desktop output). I was able to create an individual WebHelp_Pro layout
using my preferred skin, but cannot for the life of me figure out how/where to
edit the default Multiscreen HTML 5 Desktop output/layout to use that same
skin. How/where do I go in RH to make that change?

Once I know how to change one of the output layouts in the Multiscreen layout,
I can change the other layouts as desired. Once back in FM 11 I can easily
select the correct project template when I want to publish the document from
there.

I know this has to be fairly simply, but its escaping me.

Thx
Carla

I've used the search and replace path in a MIF file method when my image
links have come back broken from a translation round and I need to get the
files out ASAP (ie, rather than return them to the translators to be fixed).

It works just fine. Just be sure to make copies of everything before you do
the search and replace.

Also, you might do a few updates through Frame first so you know exactly
what path to use as the replacement.

My company is soon to begin working with translation software.

Until now, my images have been filed in a chapter subfolder. Since our
images will not be localized, I'm moving the images to a location where
they can be accessed by each language by the same path. That way, I
add/change an image once and everything updates.

The downside...I have to update the paths for all of the images in my
current English documentation.? Redefining the path for each image (or
every few images) as the interface asks for it is proving very
time-consuming and tedious.

I'm using TCS4 (FM11) on a Win7 PC. My documents typically have text
insets, images by reference, cross-references and index markers.

This morning, I thought I'd investigate whether the Insets pod would be of any
help.? I've never used it for anything before

?and, curiously, when I opened it today there's nothing in it. (Not even
the toolbar pictured in the Help files.) The same thing happens with
the Reference pod.? The markers pod is populated.

Trying to get anything in the Insets and Reference pods, I've tried
selecting a single inset, the full document content, the full book
content...nothing!

If anyone has suggestions to speed things along, using pods or by some other
method, I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks!

This may help; it's similar to Bruce Foster's "Archive" plug-in:

Modifying Image Paths

2013-04-24 Thread Mike Wickham
You can use the free Archive or Book Packager script to do this. It
moves all graphics to a single directory. You can find it here:
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2011/07/create-a-book-packager-using-extendscript.html
Be sure to get v2, at the "script attached" link. The "original script
can be found here" link, as I recall, linked to a version that had a bug
in it.

Convert A3 to A4 format

2013-04-24 Thread Rod Fee
Hi team,

I have a novel that I set up with several master pages for different files.

The majority of these have the following frames:

-Footer
-Three text boxes that flow to following pages
-A header column for each text column

I originally set it up as A3 because I thought there would otherwise not be
enough room for meaningful amount of text in each frame on each page.

I was wrong. Now I want to make it all A4.

When I select the files and try to change the page size to A4 it tells me
the column sizes will be all wrong - not entirely sure how to fix this
easily. Any clues?

Regards,
Rod Fee

TOC of document names in a book

2013-04-24 Thread Rod Fee

Rod Fee

Convert headings to destinations in PDF

2013-04-24 Thread Harvey, Peggy
Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all of the responses to my query. The mystery has finally been
solved: The tool used was AutoBookmark by Evermap. Apparently the person
created the bookmarks in FrameMaker, then used AutoBookmark on the PDF side to
delete the bookmarks, recreate them and create named destinations for the "new"

Modifying Image Paths

2013-04-24 Thread Alison Craig
I've used the "search and replace path in a MIF file" method when my image
links have come back broken from a translation round and I need to get the
files out ASAP (ie, rather than return them to the translators to be fixed).

It works just fine. Just be sure to make copies of everything before you do the
search and replace.

Also, you might do a few updates through Frame first so you know exactly what
path to use as the replacement.

You could test this to see if it works before you actually do it on your
production copies...

Open the FM file as a MIF.

Do a find and replace on the file path name.

Resave as an FM file.

It's been a long time since I looked at MIFs and what they can do, but that
approach might be an option.

FM 11/RH10 > Multiscreen HTML Output - making changes to the default Desktop output

Thx
Carla

FM 11/RH10 > Multiscreen HTML Output - making changes to the default Desktop output

2013-04-24 Thread Robert Lauriston
Sounds like the HTML 5 layout is not compatible with WebHelp skins:

"A screen layout has two key components, a set of screen layout pages
and a CSS. The screen layout pages define the content and the
structure. The CSS defines the layout and the skin."

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/robohelp/robohtml/WS1b49059a33f77726-5d8e23a513606e3bbe2-7ffe.html

Do you have a compelling reason to use the brand-new and probably not
ready for prime-time HTML 5 layout?
