OT: Cloud computing, SAAS and all that

2013-05-18 Thread Klaus Daube

Dear all,

The intensive discussion Corporate madness, ... draws my attention to increasingly bad feelings of
about the software business. I have different opinions on shareware, open source projects etc.

Business needs to make money - so do i and there is nothing bad with it. However, sometimes i feel
really enslaved as a customer or user:

Corporate Identity is prior to useability (see the november gray interfaces of Adobe)
Software i depend on for my business is not fixed (think a about that situation with
cars)
Paying for the sw for long years does not make it my property (well that's the same
with renting a
house) - but then they should not call it 'purchase'.
New features are introduced just to be able to 'sell' a new version, despite the fact
that long
lasting requirements are not considerd for implementation at all.

All in all: friss oder stirb (feed or die)

For me the worst scenario will be SAAS (Software as a service), that is the sw is located in the
cloud.

This is the end of Personal Computing.

There will be no possibility to work with a version which i have learned and with which
i am
efficient.

There will be no chance for plug-ins -- THE horror scenario for FrameMaker (and many
others).

Just my few cents...

Transfer of referenced graphics follow up report: brilliant utility [XtraBookUtils] the solution

2013-05-18 Thread Rob Shell
Dear Framers:
following my mournful complaint of finding all my referenced graphics on an
incorrect drive following a clean install of windows 64, I am happy to
report that thanks to a really brilliant plugin by Harro de Jong, anybody
can restore their original drive letters in a snap.
The plugin is flawless and scours the files--even finds referenced graphics
on the reference pages.
The plug in works by creating a two column table with the original
referenced path name and file name on the left and a duplicate on the right
column all in a regular Framemaker document. The right hand column can be
edited in any way you like, e.g. find and replace H:\ with G:\. This little
honey badger of a utility just chewed its way through nearly 11,000
incorrectly referenced graphics!

I am sure the plugin has many other uses, for my part I found a few
misplaced .tifs. [replace with jpg].

Thanks too to other Framers, Rebecca Officer al who taught me about
graphics on different drives. The interesting thing was the reference
graphics which survived were on the same drive as the root directory of C:
Since I cannot fit my graphics on D and E, I will continue to use my old
system. And hope I do not have to do another install for some time.
 Rob Shell wrote:

Use XtraBookUtils:
 http://www.bache.name/sgml.html
This creates a list of all graphics in the book, you can edit the paths in
that list and then the plugin will convert the paths.

I've seen this too, in FM 9/Win 7. I've seen this twice in 6 months of daily
use with hibernation every day. This suggests that hibernation alone isn't the
problem.
Restarting Frame would restore use of the Ctrl key.

I haven't been able to track down the cause (too many variables, too few

Not necessarily true. Most Confluence plugins work in the on-demand version.

And to repeat my earlier point, the product in question, Adobe's
Creative Cloud suite, is not SaaS. It's installed software with an
expiration date.

FrameMaker-7.2/Acrobat7.1 Issue

2013-05-18 Thread Alan T Litchfield
Richard,

Do you still have the serial number for the old Acrobat version? Why not
reinstall that? Just remember to delete all the previous settings first.

What platform? Mac?

No doubt, at some point the support person will tell you to reinstall
your computer system because *their* activation system fails to function
correctly. I have had that "advice" from Adobe support twice now, for
two different products. Don't be tempted to follow their advice. I have
managed to get the activation code working each time, without taking
Adobe Support's advice.

This might help:

2013-05-18 Thread Craig Ede
Robert,

This is definitely in FM10. The difference is that this view is brought up
by choosing View > Pods > Cross Reference or View > Pods > Markers (etc.).
The old way is through Special > Cross Reference or Special > Marker (etc.),
which gives you something completely different. This pod appears across the
bottom of the screen by default.

You can sort through markers, click on them to go to the destination, and
view unresolved cross-references quickly. You can see external
cross-references and know where they link. This was in FM10 as well, but
people were saying they don't want to upgrade from FM8.

Wow. The same command on two different menus brings up different UIs
for the same feature? I guess I'll have to try all of the entries on
the Pods menu to see what else I've missed.

Does that mean the old UI for applying conditional text is still
around somewhere? I found that much more efficient.
