Query about what happens in structured Frame
Hello Framers, I’m in need of some basic advice. I’ve been using Frame for 20 years but have not yet used structured Frame. My Frame is 8.0p273, Acrobat Professional is 10.1.7 From an eList about crime fiction, several authors are writing a collaborative mystery story. I’m organizing the story in Access. The story itself is in an rtf memo field called BookComponent.Storytext. My friend is writing VBA code to export Storytext to html (Storytext.html) but he has no familiarity with Frame. So far, he has exported to html which MS Word can read, then I can copy and paste into Frame—this is a bit too ugly for repetitive iterations. Both Rick Quatro and Shlomo Perets have offered help (services), but I don’t even understand what to ask for. If I understand correctly, what I should be able to do is to open structured Frame and introduce it to Storytext.html and somehow get all the h1 tags to convert to Heading1 paratags. Right? How could one phrase this better (so as to explain the process which happens)? I have been pointed here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\FrameMaker8\Structure\xml\xhtml\app\template but as there is nothing in the template, I don’t understand what to do with it. FrameMaker 8’s User Guide is not helpful. Could a kindly Framer point me to a sample which I could study? Thanks in advance, Theresa P.S. If you want to read the cool mystery story it’s in a pdf on this page: http://www.reviewsbytdev.com/content/Whos-Murdering-Crime-Fiction ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Query about what happens in structured Frame
Hi Theresa, Here is the document you need to start with: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/8.0/structapp_dev.pdf This will give you information on working with structured FrameMaker and structured applications. When you need reference information, you can use this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/8.0/structapp_dev_ref.pdf As far as your project, what you need is to have the XHTML EDD and template modified to match your existing unstructured template. Your Access developer should be able to produce valid XHTML from the Access data. You would then open the XHTML export from Access in FrameMaker, and the formatting should be pretty much done. Since you have a lot of FrameMaker experience, you can probably figure it out with the documentation above. Because there is already an XHTML application in FrameMaker 8, you don't have to start from scratch anyway. Another approach would be to hire someone to help you modify the existing application. I would certainly be willing to do some live sessions where you could watch me make the modifications via web meetings. Then you can learn at the same time as the job is getting done. When you feel comfortable, you could finish it up yourself. I can't speak for Shlomo, but he does a lot of working web meetings, and may be willing to do the same thing. If you are looking for free help, you can certainly post questions here as you read the documentation and start experimenting. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very much. Re: Query about what happens in structured Frame
Hi Steve, I planned to download the articles you mentioned in your response to Theresa. However, only the first article in your LinkedIn publications list is hyperlinked so that it can be downloaded. I'm not sure if this is because I use only the free LinkedIn account or if it is a restriction on your end of LinkedIn. Do you know what the problem might be? No, but LinkedIn keeps changing its page structure and stuff. Now that I come to look at the current page, *I* cant see the files download area at all. Bah. I'll e-mail you the complete archive off-list. -- Steve [Trim e-mails: use less disk, use less power, use less planet] ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Query about what happens in structured Frame
Theresa, I remember learning Frame for the first time in 2006. Many long days at the PC that summer. I went straight into structured Frame to print large (1,200 page) XML documents to PDF for commercial printing. These documents were already being transformed to HTML and another CD publishing format called Folio Views that we have used since 1990. I've slowly learned many of the unstructured basics over the years, but it's mostly just open the file in Frame, make a few image, table and page numbering adjustments and click print. If you are not familiar with XML, DTD, XHTML, XSLT, CSS, EDD and Read/Write rules what you may need is a "concept" overview. Myself, I find it difficult to request help or oversee a project if the terminology does not fit together in my mind and flow off of my tongue freely. We author, track, and translate documents using an in-house application that stores the content in a SQL Server database. The data is exported out of the database to a single XML file and transformed to XHTML for web publishing, or opened directly into Frame and printed to a PDF file for commercial printing of hardcopy books. I am not looking for work and don't have time to teach you the details, but I am willing to connect via a meeting app and show you the components of the DB to XML/HTML to Frame process.
