RE: variables interface

2013-11-13 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Craig,

If you leave the Add/Edit Variable window open, you just need
to double-click on a variable. Then you can change its definition
immediately without clicking on Edit first.

However, if the Add/Edit Variable window is not on top of its
tab group, it is not shown automatically (like e.g. the Cross-Reference
window). Then you must click on the Add/Edit Variable tab to bring
it to front. This would be a very good enhancement!
Ask for this on the Adobe Feature Request form:

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

Best regards

Winfried

I have a template with a series of built in variables that have generic content
until used in a specific document.

Double-clicking on a variable brings up the variables pod where I then have to
click Edit to bring up the window wherein I can actually change the content of
the variable.

Does anybody know a way to do this in one step? (My current process is clearly
a more complicated way to have to change variable content than the old
interface provided.)

If a one-step edit is not possible, can Adobe please add a modifier key that
can be pressed when doubled clicking on a variable so that the Edit window is
immediately available?

Apologies if I'm doing things the hard way and an obvious solution is
available. Please clue me in if that is the case.

Thanks, framers!

RE: variables interface

2013-11-13 Thread Harvey, Peggy
Hi Craig,

I highly recommend the BookVars plugin from Leximation. I use it to do exactly
what you describe in one step. I have several variables that have the same name
in all books but different definitions in each book. I maintain a single,
master variable file for all of my books, then simply import the set of
definitions for that particular book. The BookVars plugin bypasses the
Variables pod so you don't have to edit each variable with multiple clicks.

Re: framers Digest, Vol 97, Issue 12

2013-11-13 Thread David Creamer
The security issues I was referring to is whether one can actually install
software that is downloaded. Many IT departments in large companies don't allow
that. (There is a way to get a set of discs to install the Cloud SW.)

Also, if he needs to continue the subscription, another IT security issue could
arise if the computers are in a hardened environment.

Regarding the credit card security--that has already been proven to be
insecure. Best use a separate card for that.

David Creamer
IDEAS Training

The Cloud in the name is misleading, it's downloaded and installed
like any other application and your data is wherever you usually store
it.

There's no security issue in the trial version. 30 days should be
enough time to convert all the docs or determine that you should buy
InDesign.

The only minor security concern for the subscription is that it
requires a credit card number, but you can eliminate potential
exposure for that by using a virtual credit card number that's
limited to the expected charges.

Character Tag As Is setting--isn't

2013-11-13 Thread Beverly Robinson
FrameMaker 10.0.2.419 on Windows 7 64-bit

My template has a character tag, Hyperlink, that makes text blue. The Size
setting had been at 11 pt, the size for Body paragraphs. Recently I needed to
use the tag in a cross-reference in a table footnote. Table footnotes are 9 pt.
So I changed the Size setting to As Is but:

* After clicking As Is, the Size control doesn't say As Is-it's blank.

* Hyperlink text in table footnotes is larger than 9 pt.

FrameMaker help says nothing about this anomaly and I didn't see anything
similar in the first 5 pages on the FrameMaker user forum.

Has anyone else run into this? Found a solution?

Thanks for your help,
Beverly

RE: Character Tag As Is setting--isn't

2013-11-13 Thread Fred Ridder
You've identified one of the long-standing inconsistencies in the FrameMaker
UI. In the Size box of the Character Designer dialog, the as is state is
indicated by emptiness. Same with Spread and Stretch. All three of these
properties allow a continuous range of values rather than being picked from a
finite list, and I suspect that this fact complicated the ability to explicitly
indicate As Is in the box for some reason.

If you have already applied the Hyperlink tag to anything when it had a
specified size of 11 pt, that size is now a property of the text. It will not
change when you redefine the character format of the tag to be as is because
the as is size is 11 pt. If the character tag is applied within the
cross-reference format, I believe you'll need to reinsert the cross-reference
to get the oversize characters to revert to the underlying paragraph
specification for your table footnote.

Not selecting the entire word in Frame

2013-11-13 Thread michael.schwa...@teradyne.com
I'm using Frame 10. I work with keyboard shortcuts a lot. When I'm
editing, I often put the cursor in a word then hit Ctrl+Shift+left arrow,
to highlight the part of the word I want to change. I would have sworn
that, until a few minutes ago, this would select only the part of the word
from the cursor to the beginning of the word. But now it's selecting the
entire word. I can't find how to set a preference to indicate how I want
Frame to behave.

In Word, there's the option "When selecting, automatically select entire
word." I thought there was something similar in Frame. Have I been
hallucinating?

Thanks.
