Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Not Responding on New

2016-03-03 Thread Robert Lauriston
I use whatever works best and replace it when I find something better,
provided it's cost-effective.

Some of my software is the latest version, some is a couple of years
behind, some is vintage. For my purposes Photoshop 5 and Acrobat 8 are
usually more efficient than the latest versions, which I have if I
need them.

If my company had a lot of docs in FrameMaker 7.2, I'd make sure I had
a proven migration strategy, since if your tools get too far out of
date migrating may become harder. The latest version of Flare can
import FM 7 through 12.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 7.2 Not Responding on New PC

2016-03-03 Thread Kevin Ryan
Thanks again to those who've offered constructive assistance with my FrameMaker
7.2 "Not Responding" issue-and to Gillian for considerately alerting me of my
backwardness and future unemployability.

I actually AM considering an upgrade to the current FrameMaker version, as it
does perform better for a particular conversion I may need to run more
frequently soon. But basically version 7.2 has been a work horse that has met
our needs well. I have nothing but respect for it.

I'd like to suggest that this particular thread has run its course and should
end. It seems to have become a vehicle for brow-beating. Time for other
people's topics, I think!

5.5.6. There are some useful new features layered on top, but if you
know how to use any version you can quickly get up to speed on any
other. Any competent hiring manager should know that.

If the company is using DITA (highly unlikely given they're on 7.2),
upgrading to FrameMaker 13 wouldn't magically change the source.

In any case, "I need to upgrade to the latest version to keep my
skills up to date" seems like a nonstarter argument. If you want your
company to buy new software, you need to justify the cost with some
alleged benefits. And if you did a cost-benefit analysis of
alternatives to FM 7.2, FM 13 would not necessarily be the best
choice.

I currently use MIF2GO to make Microsoft HTML help (CHM), and to pay a lot of
money to upgrade to FrameMaker 2016 I have to have a good reason. At the
MEGAComm, Stefan Gentz showed us that FramMaker 2015 has HTML5 help that can
change its format automatically according to the screen size of the device. I
thought this would be nice, since users could download the help file on their
smartphones to read while they are using the application. But if HTML5 help is
a whole bunch of separate files, it doesn't sound like users could download to
their smartphones. The only option would be to put our help on a website and
let them view it there.

Is that correct? Anyone have any comments?

Hi all,

FrameMaker 2015 has HTML5 online help. Does anyone know if it is compiled into
a single file like HTML help (CHM)?

If not, how do you send someone the help file?

When they instal a program that uses HTML5 online help, do they have hundreds
of files, one for each web page plus other files for formatting?
