Re: [Framers] Inserting element in FrameMaker 2015 XML Author mode (Author View)

2017-07-11 Thread Scott Prentice

Hi Linda...

That popup only displays when you're in an element that can't have
another of the same elements as the next element (following sibling).
When you're testing on different computers are you testing in the exact
same situation? Pressing ENTER at the end of a will just give you
another (no popup), but pressing ENTER at the end of a
should give you the popup. I'm not aware of a configuration that will
turn that on or off (might be one though).

Personally, I never use the popup. I always have the Element Catalog
open and use that for inserting new elements.

Hope that helps!

Since there is no "standard" XML file, it is difficult to have a ready-made
conversion tool. If you send me a small before/after sample, I will be glad
to see what can be done. Thanks.

Re: [Framers] Document comparison whole book at a time

The trick to doing the whole book is to not open any individual files first.

Now my issue is, after comparison, I don't see the changes marked in the
later version...How do I turn the display on to show bars, additions and
deletions.

Re: [Framers] ‏השב: Converting to Word for Review

2017-07-11 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
Keep in mind that they don't care about formatting when they are
reviewing it. They just want the text. So it really should not take so
long to save it as word. Explain to them that the formatting is not nice
because it's exported from Frame.

If you afraid they might be upset by the formatting, you can send them
word files for commenting and a PDF to show them how the formatted doc
looks.

If the endpoint is back to FM, I'd skip the Word conversion & just use the
Review PDF capabilities. In Lin's case, it's all ending up in Word, so doing the FM
to PDF to Word route probably isn't the most ideal. Lin, what about hooking up
MIF2Go? Didn't it have a superior FM to Word conversion?

   Your Manager is ignorant, then.

PDF with Comments is much easier to use than Word with Track Changes...
and with Word, it's entirely possible to forget to turn on Track
Changes, and then you have no idea who changed what without doing a
   (possibly manual!) file diff.

Have you demoed a Shared Review, so that your manager can see how
multiple reviewers can all make changes simultaneously (impossible in
Word, as far as I know)? It's even nice for doing a group review in
person, as everyone can markup as they go, stay in sync, and see
if/when there's a conflict regarding proposed changes. The best Word
can do with regards to that is serialized review, which is SUPER slow
unless you have very conscientious reviewers.

Sounds like tough times for you: tons of conversion and cleanup to suit
   someone's (poorly thought out) preference.

   Bummer. :(

Re: [Framers] Converting to Word for Review

2017-07-11 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
If it's only for reviewing purposes, I would save as word, turn on
tracked changes, and show the engineers how to hide the markup so that
it doesn't bother them. When you turn on tracked changes, that stays
with the file when the file is saved. However, the option to hide the
markup does not get saved with the file, so you have to show them how to
do that if seeing the markup bothers them.

Then I put the word doc and the frame doc side by side and copy the
changes into frame. It's not all that painful.

Re: [Framers] Converting to Word for Review

2017-07-11 Thread Keith Soltys
Lin, given that you're leaving, you may not have time to do anything about
this, but I would recommend taking a look at ThirtySix Software's SmartDocs
add-in for Word. I've been using it for several years and it handles
conditional text quite well, as well as making it easy to use variables and
reusable text snippets.

In my most complex use of it, I was able to produce two different versions
of a 300-page document. The only real problem I had with it was getting
approval to use it as it's fairly expensive, especially for a Word add-in.
But it is very powerful and lets you do things in Word that used to be only
possible in Frame (and in some cases, it's easier to use).

Maybe send a link to some of the developers just before you go :-).

Keith

Re: [Framers] Converting to Word for Review

2017-07-11 Thread Lin Sims
Nope no access to FM12, plus I've used a feature not supported by FM12,
namely conditional columns in multiple tables.

I've gotten around the one file at a time by creating a new document and
importing by copy each of the non-generated files in the books. Having the
tag names come over to the RTF is more useful than having it look (almost
but not quite) the same in Word as it does in the PDF.

Plus (and I forgot to mention this), all our graphics are SVGs, which is
NOT supported by Word, so they look horrible and are frequently out of
place. The page breaks get a bit weird, too.

As to the nightmare -- you have NO idea. I use the same set of files with a
set of fairly complicated conditional expressions to generate 3 separate
books in both an internal and external version, for a total of 6 PDFs. I
now have to figure out how to create 6 separate Word files from these, and
they are NOT small or simple files. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to
finish the conversions before I leave. I feel bad for the
designers/developers who will have to deal with these, since they will have
to remember to update multiple files. Still, at the point it's
their problem, not mine. I wish them luck.

My sympathies. A nightmare for you, and a nightmare for them too, although they
probably don't know it yet ;-)

If you still have access for a Frame 12 install, maybe Frame 15 -> Frame 12 ->
Mif2GO -> Word might be feasible for you?

I agree with Rick, but would recommend (if there is the budget) a
third-party PDF->Word converter, such as ABBYFine Reader.

The PDF export seems a bit more reliable, plus you can export your
entire
book. With FrameMaker, you can only do one file at a time. Neither way
is

reliable for round-tripping back to FrameMaker.

Jeff,

MIF2GO does have superior conversion to Word, but it does not, as far as I
know, work with anything past Frame 12, and we're using Frame 2015. :(

Re: [Framers] Converting to Word for Review

2017-07-11 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
If the endpoint is back to FM, I'd skip the Word conversion & just use the
Review PDF capabilities. In Lin's case, it's all ending up in Word, so doing
the FM to PDF to Word route probably isn't the most ideal. Lin, what about
hooking up MIF2Go? Didn't it have a superior FM to Word conversion?

Re: [Framers] Converting to Word for Review

2017-07-11 Thread Lin Sims
I'm having to do this now for multiple documents because I'm being laid off
and the developers will be doing the documentation from now on, and they
only use Word. It's something of a nightmare no matter which way you choose.

If you export from PDF, the Word document will look close to identical, but
there will be no styles applied. It'll all be modified "normal".

If you export from Frame to RTF, you'll have styles, but the conversion
isn't all that clean, particularly with tables. Still, if you do search and
replace for each style, it'll get mostly cleaned up. If you have a Word
template with the predefined using the same names as the Frame tags,
importing it will (again mostly) fix things for you.

I've chosen the export to from Frame to RTF, but it still takes time to
make things presentable.
