[Framers] Creating Mixed Page Size PDFs from FM 2019

2019-05-28 Thread Charles Richardson
I have a large document that I've managed for over 10 years, most recently
using FM12. I've just upgraded to FM 15 (2019) and can no longer get the
PDF creation process to give both Letter and Tabloid pages-the PDF Tabloid
pages get cropped to Letter size. This was never a problem with FM12. I've
tried both Save As PDF and Publish PDF with identical results. The
distiller configuration file settings are the same as with FM12, and the
default page size is set to Tabloid for those books that have both page
sizes. I notice that there is a duplicate page size setting in the Publish
PDF Settings, but the fields are not accessible. I've even tried setting
the virtual PDF printer with Tabloid as the default page size. I'm now
wondering if what used to be the so-called "headless" Distiller was folded
into FM to create the Publish PDF function and that there is some part of
that that is not working as expected.

I've cross-posted this question on the Adobe FrameMaker forum but have had
no responses with solutions, or confirmation that others obtain the same
result.

Have any of you experienced this behavior? Thanks for your help!

I think Adobe Classroom in a Book is still good for most unstructured features.

I don't know if there are any solid resources for structured. I
couldn't find any when I was looking a few years ago.

Re: [Framers] Resources for getting up and running in Frame

2019-05-28 Thread Craig Ede
I have to agree with this. It is still possible to print out the entire manual
from the pdf. I remember the FrameMaker 5.5 manual (which came with the product
as a hardcopy) as being exceptionally good, but with all the changes since
then, the new PDF is the better place to go. There has been a tendency to
piecemeal things out, losing some of the global concerns that really ought to
drive how one uses FrameMaker. I think that is an effect of DITA parsing, but I
believe enough high level stuff is still covered to offset that.

Way back in 1995, I had to learn Frame by the seat of my pants. I
literally read the ENTIRE user manual (the one that came in the box
with the discs) from cover to cover. I had been a WordPerfect user
and it was an adjustment to wrap my head around the concept of
needing a "frame" in which to enter all content, text or otherwise. I
don't think that Frame is one of those pieces of software that you
can learn to be good at simply by mucking around in it (which is
pretty much how I've learned most other software). You really need a
structured framework in which to learn it, either a course or a book.

[Framers] Resources for Learning FrameMaker

2019-05-28 Thread Julie . Sigrist
I also recommend Matt Sullivan's books and courses. I am self taught with
FrameMaker starting 9 years ago and I still have Matt's books on my desk
everyday. His Creating Content course is great for a newbie.
