Yes, _exactly_! Which is what I consider unreasonable from Adobe - the rate for
a single tool (i.e., FM), given their subscription pricing for suites, is too
high.

Now, if you are more than one version out of date with FM, you may as well kiss
that old license goodbye ... unless you can keep it using without upgrading or
bug fixes.

I suppose this may work for those who are willing to consider subscription
licenses - I am not! "Your mileage may vary", of course! 

Extreme point: For me, for the occasional use I give many of my tools, having
to pay monthly (even a year at a time) sub fees, in total for everything, would
be expensive!

This subscription model, adopted by _many_ providers now, misses that important
point (of total amounts) entirely - they assume that their own charges are low
enough for each user.

It is why I am changing towards free software, for the most part, for
everything I do. They are getting _way_ good enough for many things.
Particularly when most commercial software now comes attached with bells and
whistles which the vast majority of users do not use.

I think so? At least with FrameMaker, 2020 installed into a separate folder
and left the 2019 installation alone.

Re: [Framers] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-26 Thread Craig Ede
This brings up and interesting question. When the subscription pushes out a new
version, can you leave an earlier FrameMaker version on a machine and use that
for files that you want to stay in that version?

The medical device industry can be quite hidebound about using newer versions
of software since they validate their quality systems against a particular
version and don't want to do all that work again. For a consultant, working
with different clients who may have different version requirements, the ability
to run multiple versions is imperative.

In 2015 I used Creative Cloud and the Adobe subscription let us install the new
versions but keep the older versions of particular software active, too.

And if you are worried that a machine is about to die on you, you can always
deactivate the license and install it on another machine. OS advancements are
another can o' worms but usually Win users can get things to run on the newer
OS versions.

Nothing happens. You bought a perpetual license for FM12 and it will
continue to work as long as the machine and OS allow it to.

FM documentation disappears every now and then from the Adobe site. Hence I
collect
items since years and offer them at

Re: [Framers] [EXTERNAL] Adobe licensing is migrating to subscription based

2020-08-26 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
If you ever need to reinstall it, and it uses a license server to check
the license when you install it, it may eventually not be able to
install. This happened to me with Acrobat 7, and Adobe was nice enough
to give me another installer that did not require a license server. I
hope they keep being nice. Although legally they probably have to help
you, who wants to have to take them to court.

As to an earlier email of yours, there is no difference between someone
upgrading from an earlier version to 2020 or someone getting a new
subscription to 2020. The subscription price is the same for everyone.
There are two annual options (no monthly option for FM!): one is to prepay
for a year (about $360), the other is to pay monthly ($29.99) for a year's
subscription (which totals about $360) with cancellation fees if you cancel
it early.
