Subject: Frame10 new DITA file opens as read only

Hi All,

I'm trying to create a .dita file using Frame10 structured. I can open a new
DITA concept file, with a concept title, but when I try to add anything below
this, I get an error message (dialog box) saying 'Cannot make any changes.
Document is view only.'

Frame10, TCS3, XP, SP2, 3GB RAM.

Can anybody tell me what key stoke combination or menu choices I accidentally
made to have this happen, so that I can undo them?

Many thanks,
Ant

RE: FrameMaker 10

2011-04-01 Thread Anthony Davey
Hi Art,

Unfortunately, perhaps, my Print to File checkbox is, by default, unchecked;
and the default output is still a .prn file.

My other default setting, which is a complete PITA here in England, is that the
default paper size on my Adobe PDF printer is Letter. PLEASE, can anybody tell
me how to set it to A4?

Best regards,

Anthony,

If you uncheck the Print To File checkbox on the Frame print dialog
box, Distiller automatically distills the PS file for you. Makes it a
one-step process instead of several.

Hi Brian,

It's a long time since I looked at any of the British Standards for technical
documentation, but what I saw was teaching grandma to suck eggs. The BSs
should now comply with European standards, so if you want to Goo.., sorry,
'search for' the British versions these are likely to be the most relevant to
your work.

BS 4884 - Technical manuals
Part 1 : 1992 - Specification for the presentation of essential information
Part 2 : 1993 - Guide to content
Part 3 : 1992 - Guide to presentation

BS 4899 - User's requirements for technical manuals (based on BS 4884)
Part 1 : 1991 - Content
Part 2 : 1992 - Presentation

BS 7137 : 1989 - User documentation and cover information for consumer software

BS 7649 : 1993 - Guide to: The design and preparation of documentation for

BS 7830 : 1996 - Guide to: The design and preparation of on-screen

Esteemed colleagues,

A while back there was a technique noted on this forum for saving a Word (docx)
document such that the art was automatically extracted into a separate folder
from the text. Can anyone help me with this technique? We are converting a
number of art-rich Word docs into our Frame templates and would very much like
to have this technique in hand. Thanks in advance.

Slightly OT: CE guidelines for organizing, formatting documentation

2011-03-28 Thread Anthony Davey

BS 7137 : 1989 - User documentation and cover information for consumer software
packages (= ISO 9127 : 1988)

BS 7649 : 1993 - Guide to: The design and preparation of documentation for
users of application software

BS 7830 : 1996 - Guide to: The design and preparation of on-screen
documentation for users of application software (complementary to BS 7649)

ISO/IEC GUIDE 37:1996

And these European Directives:

Product Liability Directive 85/374/EEC

General Product Safety Directive

Electrical Equipment (LVD) 73/23/EEC

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) 89/336/EEC

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) 92/31/EEC

I'm trying to find formatting and organization guidelines, standards, or even

standards, if they even exist?

Slightly OT: Frame 10 landscape pages not recognised in Acrobat X

2011-03-14 Thread Anthony Davey
Hi All,

I'm trialling TCS3 and I've got a book/document in Frame with a group of 15
landscape pages in it - out of 214 in the whole book. When I Save (the book or
the file) as PDF from Frame using Distiller X all the pages are in portrait
format, chopping off the edges of the table that appears on the landscape pages.

I've tried resetting the Auto-Rotate pages setting in Distiller from
'Collectively' to 'Off' and 'Individually', however, neither alternative makes
any difference to the end result - all pages are portrait. Can anybody suggest
what settings I need to be changing, and where?

Many thanks,
Ant

RE: trouble installing TCS3 with CS5 DP

2011-03-04 Thread Anthony Davey
Hi John,

I'm listening, but can't help as I'm running a trial TCS3 on top of Design
Standard CS4 (on XP Pro SP3). Only problem I've had so far is that Frame 10
crashes for reasons I don't understand. These crashes seem to relate to
corrupted files, but haven't happened to a pattern as yet. That and the issue
with Acrobat X not recognising installed fonts.

I saw no problems when I installed the TCS3 trial from CD on top of DS4.

I have had Adobse CS5 Design Premium for some time, and am now adding TCS3.
FrameMaker 10 is an upgrade from FM9, RoboHelp and Captivate are all-new to
this system, and I don't know what the relationship is with TCS3's Acrobat X
and CS5's Acrobat 9, or with TCS3's Photoshop and CS5's Photoshop.
It's not working. FM10 and RH9 always fail to install, but everything else
seems to install OK.
I get some failure messages relating to AdobeHelp and other things that seem to
be under the covers, and a number that refer to things that pre-exist without
upgrade paths to the new versions, but no obvious conflicts with the main
products - nonetheless it is those that fail to install.
Adobe Support has escalated this, but is still flailing about wildly three days
later.
Has anyone else had similar experiences with CS5 and TCS3?

Fonts not found

2011-03-01 Thread Anthony Davey
Hi All,

Help please. Trialling Frame 10 in TCS3 on XP SP3. From Frame 10, using a
template built in 8, I can display our corporate logo font in the Frame docs,
but when I use Distiller to Save as PDF... the typeface changes to Times New
Roman.

The corporate face is AG Book Rounded. In the Frame paragraph designer this
displays as 'AG Book Rounded Medium'; but in C:\Windows\Fonts the nearest
equivalent is 'AGBookRounded-Medium (OpenType)'.

However, this doesn't seem to be the cause, or at least not all of it. I tried
substituting 'Myriad Pro' (name in paragraph designer - which is an Adobe
supplied typeface, admittedly), the equivalent of which in C:/Windows/Fonts is
'MyriadPro-[VariantName] (OpenType)' and this did not get substituted.

I've reinstalled Acrobat and Frame since importing the fonts into
C:/Windows/Fonts and the fonts all show up in the Frame fonts list, so it must
be a foible of Acrobat X, mustn't it?

This is the corporate typeface for titles of publications so it's a bit
important that I resolve this soon.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Best regards,
Ant

Best regards,
Ant

RE: Frame Light, what's the potential market?

2011-02-23 Thread Anthony Davey
Shmuel,

The point is that you (SMEs) can't create content in a PDF. Frame Light is not
just about review, it's a way of making content creation potentially more
structured and less open to abuse (read local formatting overrides).

Adobe wants you to use Acrobat for that (with PDFs). That why they incorporated
comments features in Acrobat and incorporating the comments into Frame.

I had an interesting discussion with the Frame Product Manager a few days ago at
the London launch event for TCS3. It seems there is the motivation to develop a
business case for 'Frame Light' which could be used by SMEs to create and review
content, but little else.

I work in an environment where I am the only Frame user (experimenting with 10
at the moment) in an organisation with over 100 SMEs producing content in Word.
Most do their own thing, or come to me to 'fix' or standardise stuff once it is
collected together.

So, I would want 'Frame Light' to allow content creation in structured or
unstructured format (including DITA one day), but that requires the content
provider to use only the pre-determined paragraph formats and a few text styles
(emphasis, bold, sub- and superscript); and insert images by reference. I can
get around a need to define conditional text by using different paragraph format
names. All this in templates that can only be developed or altered by full
license holders.

To support the development of a business case can you post what (other)
functionality you would want Frame Light to have, how many licenses you would
(ideally) want in your organisation, how many full Frame licenses you currently
have (for comparison purposes), how you would want FL delivered (local install,
web-based, floating licenses), and what you would want/need to pay for it to get
it accepted as an alternative to Whatever word processing your SMEs currently
use?

Creating more disciplined (structured), reusable, content which can be output
with a similar look and feel, and doesn't reinvent a wheel each time an SME puts
fingers to keyboard, is a concept which has almost reached its time in my
organisation. Others may be close, or even ahead, so there must be demand for
this. Please let me know.

Mike,

FrameMaker can do SGML, the structured parts were invented in the late 1990s.
But who would want to use SGML nowadays? XML is a standard since 2000, there

SGML crosses my way only in solutions dating back 5 or more years, for

Hi Anthony,

You can do this with pdfmark statements embedded in your FrameMaker
documents. The easiest way to automate this process is with TimeSavers and
the optional Multimedia Assistant. See http://www.microtype.com for details.
This is excellent software and will save you a ton of time if you have a lot
of sounds to embed.

If you want more details on what is possible, please contact me offlist and
I will try to help you. Please let me know if you have any questions or

Hi everybody,

I have a Frame document which will eventually be saved as a PDF using
Acrobat 9 Pro. What I want to achieve is embedded sound files (I believe
acrobat will now only handle mp3, so I have those) with an icon
representation that, when clicked, will play the sound file.

I have tried embedding the files into the Frame doc, and the PDF doesn't
play them. I have tried embedding them in the PDF, which works, but when I
click the icon an mp3 file icon appears over the top of it. This is a grey
box with very small stop, play and pause buttons and a 'file progress play
line'. This remains visible after the file has played, and would mean
little to any of my readers.

Does anybody have a solution, preferably in Frame, but otherwise in the PDF
that will allow me to embed a sound file that plays when an icon is clicked?

Multitudinous thanks in advance,
Ant

RE: Embedding sound files in Frame8 docs

2010-07-21 Thread Anthony Davey
Hi Rick,

Thank you for this information. It's not something we need to do a lot of
(yet); and scripting Frame is something I haven't had to get into yet, so this
could be a great learning experience :)

Best regards,
Ant

Please let me know if you have any questions or
comments. Thank you very much.

Multitudinous thanks in advance,
Ant
