Way back in the dark ages, when FrameMaker was first ported to Windows, I
worked with a FM staff member, Mercedes (still fondly remember her), to address
bugs and issues. She sent me updates via overnight courier and these were
multiple disk sets, calling for a fresh install. The reason I remember her name
is because we talked almost daily and installation disks arrived weekly or more
until the issue count dropped.

Of course, I don't expect this level of customer service anymore from any
software publisher, but through the years I have had bits and pieces of
exemplary support. On a contract to bring a trade book to press, I worked with
Dov over the phone as to why illustrations with schematics wouldn't reproduce
lines. and this from the printer's site in Michigan.
More recently, I worked with Adobe to resolve an issue where importing and
converting a MS Word document crashed FrameMaker (MS Word Track Changes caused
the problem - this was last year).

I am not happy with the subscription model as I believe it's an egregious
affront to hold the software hostage when missing a subscription payment. From
a business point of view, it's a cash flow solution, reducing the seasonal
vagaries of software sales. But it's not customer-centric. And this is a
problem.

A while back, someone on this forum mentioned difficulty finding a FrameMaker
manual. I have a 1241 page Adobe PDF version dated June 1,
2021 on the cover page. It's a 46MB file, but if anyone wants a copy, I'll post
it where it can be downloaded.

And Yes if you insert Index entries for any of these product designations like
"123.456".
HTML would include an index search.

Hi Winfried,

you recognized the different layout/formatting concept between Desktop
FrameMaker with Paper/PDF Editing view and the different HTML layout and box
model.

1.) "I do not know which font will be used. "

Font substitution you may define in the resulting CSS. Once defined you can use
the CSS as part of the general conversion settings

2.) a) "Graphics conversion with SVG is best"

Sure it remains SVG

2.b) "However, if you have some other objects in the same anchored frame,
then you should convert to raster images. I find the results much better than
I expected."

This is the standard approach as the layer concept (as defined in FM) is not
supported by the HTML conversion process The quality has been dramatically
improved upon the several updates

3.) "When you have tables with table titles with several paragraphs, then you
have to use a work-around. HTML allows only a single paragraph."

See here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10987920#10987920

4:) "I do not know how I can define which text goes into a topic title. E.g.
when my paragraph to start a new topic has a table anchor, then the whole
anchor paragraph and the whole table text will be in the topic

  title."

Well that's clear, as the table anchor defines the position of the content of
the table within the text flow. This table anchor is a DTP relict.

Therefore in my templates tables must be anchored in an separate paragraphs
called table anchor.

In addition topic title" is a very difficult term which is often misunderstood:
For a customer a topic title always is the first paragraph in a HTML Topic and
therefore it shall start with a heading.

If the topic content does not start with a heading the technical writer created
a structural mistake.

In technical aspects the topic title might be interpreted as the HTML title
tag. Therefore the conversion or topic creation process clearly must take into
account that the first paragraph (heading) and the topic title will get the
identical content.

A third aspect might be seen in the filename of the HTML topic: This can be but
only "by accident" identical with the topic title but never should be taken as
the standard topic title!

5.) "Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want to
search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between two
words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a solution."

work - I'll ask the FM development team regarding this issue Regards Dieter

Hi Yves,

I also started to convert my unstructured documentation to HTML5.
And I do not have any tutorials or best practices. I am still experimenting.
I will look for more information in the online help and in the various forums
and blogs.
My first impressions and questions:

o Default settings are good.

o I do not know which font will be used. Probably my font will be replaced
by something else. However, I do not know, which fonts are on Android
or iOS. Is there are default replacement?

o Graphics conversion with SVG is best. However, if you have
some other objects in the same anchored frame, then you should
convert to raster images. I find the results much better than I expected.

o When you have tables with table titles with several paragraphs, then
you have to use a work-around. HTML allows only a single paragraph.
  See here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/10987920#10987920

o I do not know how I can define which text goes into a topic title.
E.g. when my paragraph to start a new topic has a table anchor, then
the whole anchor paragraph and the whole table text will be in the topic
  title.

o Most of our products have order codes like 123.4567. When I want
to search for such order codes, the . is interpreted as separator between
two words. As if I want to search for 123 and 4567. I do not know a solution.

o Of course I had written documents with a certain layout. I have to find
solutions for some of my paragraph layouts (e.g. right-aligned tab stops).

o I adapt a copy of the regular settings file on our network. I do not know,
if there is a standard solution, where this settings file should reside.

Best regards

Winfried

Re: [Framers] Editing Footer in HTML5 Responsive output from FrameMaker

2018-03-08 Thread Gust, Dieter
Caroline asked
"My project is checked to use an html template, but not the default one in the
system (as that one does not have that copyright line in it)
The question is where or how can I find the actual file that I used?"

Well I fear, you'll have no chance: Only the content of the imported HTML
template is mapped as part of the settings.
Try the following:

1. Identify the correct settings file (extension sts) for your HTML5 output

2. Copy the settings file to a working folder and rename it by adding .zip
extension
Now you see it is a ZIP file where you can look into

3. Identify MasterPage.htt in the subfolder of this zip file
\responsive_html5_!MasterPage!\MasterPage.htt

4. Try to identify the text you want to change " copyright 2017" Change the
text as desired

5. Rename the settings file back to .sts

Be careful: Using a ZIP-extraction tool and re-zipping the files after
modifying them may add an unwanted sub folder, which makes the STS file
useless, until you remove the subfolder (This is a question only how the ZIP
tool works)

The other solution is:
Copy the sub folder PageTemplate located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe
FrameMaker 2017\fminit\Publisher\Template\Document\PageTemplate\" to any
working folder
Change the "HTMLTemplate.htm" as desired and import this modified HTML page
Template (File > Publish >Settings File - Edit > Output > Use HTML page
Template: from the new location)

Note: Copying the HTMLTemplate.htm only for changing it is not enough at least
you must copy pagetemplate.css as during import in FrameMaker checks if the css
file exists just beside the location of the page HTMLTemplate.htm

FM has a long history (and structured and non-structured FM had been separate
products) - already years ago the FM evangelist just said that: Use structured
mode only even for unstructured documents because FM's layout engine and PDF
interface are for unstructured documents the same in both modes.

Subject: More bad news on TCS4: no longer includes Photoshop

I must add that I have found another disadvantage to buying TCS4, especially
if you are a first-time buyer.
TCS4 does not include Photoshop, whereas TCS2 does, or did
I must confess that I find it odd that Adobe and not a single reviewer has
 mentioned this.
If you really need Photoshop, I understand you.

If you think of typical technical documentation use cases, RoboScreenCapture
and Illustrator which are included instead of Photoshop (!!) are the better
choice. .

 1. One cannot print a book in unstructured FM11.
You refer to a bug, which is really annoying, but printing the book in
structured mode might be a suitable workaround for the short.
Save the book as PDF file is working in unstructured mode.

 2. Forget about online support.
Why? Online support always is a combination of official Adobe feedback and
customer feedback from all over the world.
While an official Adobe feedback always will have to take into account side
effects and therefore must be careful with hastily tips and workarounds, a lot
of well-known experts in framers are giving fast and valuable feedback to
almost any problem.

 3. Do without Photoshop.
Most technical documentation use cases don't deal with CMYK so I think cheap
software or freeware (Photoshop Elements, IrfanView...) should fulfill the
demands. For screenshots RoboScreenCapture (which is good) is included in TCS4.
A lot of customers asked for switching from Photoshop to Illustrator which is
now included in TCS4.

 4. Forget about timely patches
Why?
The Adobe TCS team is always seeking dedicated contact to TCS customers, and
while I hate bugs like a plague Adobe delivers patches as soon as possible.
O.K. The Adobe team might think about a similar approach like Microsoft in
order to establish hotfixes beside regular patches.

As a user of many programs over the years, what I see here is a drastic
 cutting down of FrameMaker
If you think of licenses I fear you may be right but if you think of the
commitment of Adobe this has increased from year to year.
But indeed to compete with InDesign and Word the commitment might still be much
too little.

RE: Release Date for FrameMaker 8?

2006-05-16 Thread Gust, Dieter
Seen from multi-language publishing point of view the recent update
FM 7.2p158 is the most important one for the last years
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3332
If a company wants to stick to FrameMaker for the next years and produces
documentation for the European countries I strongly recommend to update as soon
as possible.
Multiple Undo, numerous bug fixes and the XML related improvements are really a
good basis for the future of Desktop Publishing with or without XML and be
worth the upgrade costs.

There really is no alternative to FrameMaker as for example the improvements of
Word 2007 are for greeting card designers and not for the creation of technical
documentation.
If you agree to this perception you may keep cool in looking for the next Adobe
FrameMaker updates. The most important point is: FrameMaker is living and Adobe
now shows that the want to keep FrameMaker alive.
If you take a look at all the great plug-ins and FrameScript Scripts for
FrameMaker (best links: http://www.leximation.com/toolsearch/ and

then you will see: There really is no need to call into question the future of
FrameMaker.

FrameMaker does not directly support the extended character sets
available in many OpenType fonts. There are some registry hacks
that can be performed to provide a window over other parts of
the font, but such techniques are not supported or endorsed by
Adobe AND can leave you with documents that are incompatible
 with future versions of FrameMaker!

I'm sorry Dov,

what you call registry hacks are by no means any secret technology.
Contrariwise they are an official(!) Microsoft Windows procedure to enable
different character sets (derived from Standard(!) Windows code pages) from an
OpenType font to Non-Unicode applications like FrameMaker.
FontSubstitutes exist since Windows 3 and they still exist in Windows XP.
Without this feature all FrameMaker users of the European Union would be forced
to throw FrameMaker away, as FrameMaker then would not support about half of
the European languages.

Microsoft did not document this feature or the documentation got lost in the
Microsoft Web as now we live in the Unicode age. On the other hand the
FontSubstitutes feature is an integral part of the RTF specification so almost
every one dealing with translation in non-western languages had and has to do
with this feature (we also call virtual fonts) even if he/she didn't knew this.

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=http%3a%2f%2fwww.support.microsoft.com%2fkb%2f159594%2fen-us%2f

The link pointing to WGL Assistant (a non Microsoft solution) is wrong.
Here is the correct link: http://wgl.typ.pl/
There you'll find all information you need about FontSubstitutes and virtual
fonts.

It's interesting that Adobe officially refuses to support this Windows standard
existing since Windows 3. But we live now in the Unicode age. We can hardly
wait for Adobe to implement Unicode support into FrameMaker in order to forget
what you called a hack.

With regard to the question how to insert less than or equal without using
the Symbol font the answer is: If that character would belong to an official
Windows code page you could easily insert it in FrameMaker, but it isn't

For an easy insertion of any character into a FrameMaker document take a look
at:
