Where on Adobe is the info/link to renew my maintenance contract for FrameMaker?

2013-04-03 Thread MamaRed Knight
One reason I ditched easyPDF creator and a couple of others is that the
bookmarks I happen to like/use all the time weren't part of the deal. I did
check in with support on a couple of the tools and they said "no, you can
add them later." Not what I wanted to hear!

Re: How to generate an index of names without markers (or by automated insertion of markers)

2012-11-25 Thread MamaRed Knight
I agree that IXGen would be a great solution and it still needs something
to go on to insert the marker...even a character tag. If you don't have a
way to identify the content uniquely from text surrounding it, I'm not sure
how you can find the names without some sort of search and tag operation.
And is this document subject to changes? If so, those page numbers *could*
change too. Your client is right that it can be done AND it isn't a 5
second, snap your fingers and done situation. If it wasn't specced in the
original agreement, that would be something I would handle as a change
order with a signed approval1

If I think of something else today I'll let you know and am sending you
lots of positive thoughts!

What I am looking for is a way to locate a name in the document, find out

 Adams, Douglas 42
 Bradbury, Ray 451

I am fairly experienced Framemaker user but I can not come up with a way of
doing this without inserting (Author) markers for every instance where one

 and
we would have to view each page manually.

I have tried my best to come up with some (semi)automated way of achieving
this but the only thing I can think of would be to save the document as mif

elements where it finds any of the listed names. Probably time consuming,
and highly unsafe or at least unpredictable.

My question to all you experts is if there is any way to get this done
 using
Framemaker itself, or a plug-in for Framemaker, or using any other tool you

For this project we use Framemaker 7.2.

Re: How to generate an index of names without markers (or by automated insertion of markers)

2012-11-25 Thread MamaRed Knight
Oh Frank, thanks for the reminder that it can work from a list of keywords.
Had forgotten that one and IXgen is a fantabulous tool for lots of reason!

On Sun, 25 Nov 2012, Kenneth C. Benson wrote:

Indeed, IXgen will do this (among many other things), but not in the
traditonal sense of a concordance (we stayed away from offering
conventional concordance building tools, because fairly bad indexes are
 often the result).

That said, the best IXgen tool for this particular task would be Markers
 from Keywords.

You would set up a list of your names, what you want to put in a marker
when the name is found (by default the search string is also the marker
content -- but you can change this). You can also indicate the marker type
to use, which would be a good way to keep this list separate from your main
 index entries.

You could have IXgen do this automatically, or you could have it do the
process interactively, where you can see the context of each find and (a)
skip it, (b) accept it and insert the new marker, (c) modify the marker
text to be used at the particular find, or (d) select from a drop-down list
of marker string choices that has been built from your previous on-the-fly
 modifications.

IXgen is pretty slick with the marker creation process. Other creation
tools include markers from paragraph tags and markers from character tags.

IXgen is also very good at supporting your marker editing tasks, such as
spell checking, unification of markers, making subentries, and so on.

We invite the original poster to take a look with a fully functional demo
at www.fsatools.com. (For some reason, the original post never showed up
 in our inbox.)

Thanks so much for posting your updates and progress. I just got another
project from a client today (although the source file is Word and I'm
debating whether I bring into Frame or just deal with it). It is always a
treat to pick up a few tips and tricks that make life easier.

One thought on your paragraph:

I looked into putting the doc on the Amazon Kindle store, but that is much
more of a hassle than you might expect, and I am still waiting to see if
there is a way to post it for free. If you use the Kindle Direct program,
you must charge a minimum of $1.99 or $2.99 depending on which of two
confusing options you choose. I have an email in to Amazon support for help
with that.

One tip for this that I've read about, although not tried, is making the
book available somewhere else for free (if that is what you intend to do).
Then go back to the Kindle listing in Amazon and check the box found
cheaper elsewhere. Maybe that would work for you?

Great one Jeremy! Thanks sooo much for the repost. One hint, if I
might. I recently published a Kindle book after many hours of research.
Setting the fonts doesn't do much because the Kindle user can set what they
want it to be. I streamlined and focused on 2-3 headings that were
proportionally larger than the body text.

Don't know if that is useful and hope it saves someone the time I spent
putzing with the stuff!

Do you or will you have in the future a mif2go *.mobi, *.prc, or *.azw
generator? I have attached a copy of the Amazon Kindle Publishing
 Guidelines for your perusal.

I found a fairly simple method, at least to MOBI for Kindle,
but the same toolset does many more formats.

 First, get Calibre. It's free:
  http://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows
Run it and set up its own empty directory somewhere.

Now set up your Frame book as usual If you have stuff
before the TOC, like cover, title page, etc., put that in
one Frame file and include it as the first item in the
TOC (possibly conditioned out for PDF or other formats).
Make sure you add the char format for page numbers in
the TOC so you can tell M2G to delete them (par. 12.7.2.3).

Set up a Mif2Go project for plain HTML, with wrap and
ship on, so you get a zip of the HTML. Run it.

Make sure you don't get the log file in the wrap
dir; if you did, remove it from the .zip. It will
 mess you up.

In the Wrap dir, rename the *TOC.htm to index.htm.
Remove the *TOC.htm from the zip, and put in index.htm.
(In Win 7, you can do that with Explorer.)

In Calibre, Add Book and select the zip you made.
Calibre copies it into its own dir. Fill in the
metadata Calibre wants (title, author, lang, etc.).

With the zip selected in Calibre, Convert to MOBI.
 Look at all the screens before telling it to start;
under Look and Feel, disable scaling of fonts, and
under Structure, specify NO TOC. You may see other
 tweaks you want to make.

Look at the resulting MOBI in a viewer, preferably
a real Kindle or the Amazon Kindle app on your desktop.
Calibre has its own viewer, but it doesn't behave the
same as Kindle. I wasted some time fixing things that
were fine on the actual Kindle. For example, Kindle
puts a page break for each new HTML file, so you can
control those by where you Split. The Calibre viewer
 ran them all together.

You will probably want to make changes in font size,
alignment, indents, etc. Open the local.css in the
wrap dir in an editor like Notepad++ and adjust it.
Save, and drag the CSS to the .zip in the Calibre
directory. Rerun the Convert. I did this about 20
 times. ;-)

There you are... Took me about five hours for the
first 200-page book, and an hour for the second one.

Note: Most of that time was spent tweaking CSS.
The different e-readers are totally inconsistent in
their support, even of the simplest things like
 left-margin.

and was developed back in the mid 90s. I found a copy on my external drive
(surprised I still have it actually!). I did get it to read a Version 7 MIF
file (although it didn't like my long folder names!).

You can use the hex code \x12 where ever you want the thin space to appear.
I've got an old version of the Windows Character Sets if you want it...I
believe it has remained consistent over the years although I wouldn't lay

Re: Link a colored background to a section of text so it moves as the doc flow changes?

2011-08-24 Thread MamaRed
Another option, since you say the size is fairly consistent, would be to
create a pair of tags, one holds the graphic (it is stored on the reference
page) and the other hold the text. I haven't used 9 and this was something
that I used for many different options. It takes playing with the settings
of a negative above amount for 1 paragraph and a negative below amount for
the other.

If this is something that might work, I could see if I can dig out a
sample.

Design requires a colored graphic behind this section. Pagination can change
as content changes, but this section is always the last section in the
document. Content of this section is fairly stable, so adjusting the size of
the colored background would be a very occasional task.

Single-cell borderless table? Bummer on page breaks, but should work
otherwise. Else try graphics and text inside an anchored frame?

Re: adding icon to FM para tag?

2011-08-04 Thread MamaRed
I've actually done this different ways (in 7.x), depending on what the
desired look is. One way was to create a paired set of tags: one holds the
graphic, the other the alert text.

ANother was a preconfigured table that had the graphic and the appropriate
color stored as part of the table format.

I would be happy to share details...and if this wasn't what you were looking
for, didn't want to waste your time. Let me know!

Re: FM / how to identify new images/

2010-12-15 Thread Jerilynne MamaRed Knight
Hi Anton

When you generate the LIst, there is an option to turn on hyperlinks (it is
available on the Set Up List of References window where you selected the
option of Imported Graphics

If that wasn't turned on the first time you generated the list, you can turn
it on now, regenerate the list and then should be able to click and entry
and it will take you to the source.

If you can't get that to work, let me know and I'll see what I can do to
lend a hand.

Many blessings

I tried to generate a List of References. It works.
Is it possible to make each item of the list a Xreference pointing to the
image file and/or to have the page number?

You should be able to add a list of references that shows the files to your
book, assuming you imported the graphics by reference.

Rather than checking the fit in frames manually, I would use a
FrameScript Rick Quatro has one that does this, and other
 FrameScripters
should be able to write one.
