[Framers] Why so many of us feel the way we do about Adobe

2021-10-13 Thread Norton, Michael
Some of us have been using FrameMaker since it was owned by Frame. For many
years, it seemed as if Adobe was trying to abandon FraneMaker. That has changed
and it is still a good product. RoboHelp, however, is much more troublesome. I
would not recommend it. It's buggy, and cumbersome. That said, the company I
work for is moving into a DITA toolset that is even more buggy than RoboHelp
and doesn't have nearly the publishing capabilities of FrameMaker. So, I am
thankful that I can, for a little while longer, still work with one good tool.

And yeah, installation and licensing is a pain. I hesitate to get with Adobe
Support for RoboHelp problems because a reinstall is often necessary and it's
just a major pain. In contrast, I can't remember the last time I had to contact
them with a FrameMaker problem. FrameMaker has that one characteristic that I
really appreciate in a software tool - it works.

[Framers] Best Method, Word 2013 to Frame 2019

2019-03-12 Thread Norton, Michael
It’s been a while since I have had to do this, but if you save the Word file as
an HTML document, Word will extract all of the graphics and place them in a
separate folder. I believe the graphics were saved as jpg files, but you can
convert/rename those files as needed. I did not use the resulting HTML in the
actual conversion.

[Framers] Save as PDF with Windows 10 and FM 2015

2018-09-10 Thread Norton, Michael
Looks like I will soon be required to move to Windows 10. I am currently on
Windows 7 and am using FrameMaker 2015.

Does this problem also affect FM 2015?

I do not use .SVG files in my FrameMaker documents, but rather .PNG file.

Thanks.

[Framers] Adding alternative text to images

2017-02-23 Thread Norton, Michael
How do you add alternative text to images in FrameMaker 2015?

I see in the Frame Help that it is supported, but I did not see how, nor is
there a field for entering the text on the Object Properties panel.

I'm trying to include a brief description of the image, typically a screen
shot, to files that will be published as PDF files.

Thanks.

[Framers] Adobe Webinars

2016-08-25 Thread Norton, Michael
I've encountered the same frustrations. These webinars can be very useful tools
for the FrameMaker community, you'd think Adobe would be more interested in
making them easy to find and easy to use.

Because of an acquisition, I will be moving some, if not eventually all, of my
stuff into Flare. I have to say that Madcap does a better job of making
webinars easy to find and use, based on what I've seen so far - and Max is
there now.

[Framers] I'm pretty sure the answer is structured content with DITA but I'll ask anyway

2016-07-27 Thread Norton, Michael
I worked in an environment that sounds somewhat similar to your's for a few
years. I produced "comprehensive" Release Letters that sometimes reached 300
pages. Each new feature was discussed in its entirety and I was also the lone
writer. I argued against that approach, but I did not win that argument and
given that I was going to remain a lone writer, it proved to be workable.

I tried to write each feature description in a way that would match its target
book, so after the software and the Release Notes were released, I could fairly
quickly go back and update the various manuals. It was then mainly a matter of
cutting and pasting with some minor tweaks. A release might consist of 80
features and the doc for each could require a paragraph or 20 pages. Each
feature was documented in a single Frame file and these files were pulled into
the Release Notes document as insets.

I would identify where the new information would go in the existing doc set
when I began working on a feature. If the feature was pretty solid, I might
even go ahead and place it in the target book. Usually, within a month or so of
the software release, I had the books up-to-date.

This was done in unstructured Frame. There were a total of 60 manuals in the
doc set, but only 10-15 were typically updated with each release.

Now, being the only writer for 30+ developers, I mainly put out a lot of fires.
It was hard to do more than make incremental improvements to anything. I did
consider trying to move to a structured workflow, but given the size of the doc
set, the workload, and the resources available (me), it just didn't seem
practical.

FrameMaker is rather intolerant of network latency. Since you mentioned
referenced graphics and intermittent errors ... are the graphics on a network
drive? That may be a root cause.

You might set up a document with local referenced graphics to test this
hypothesis.

We used to see this kind of error on Unix when the disk quota area was too
small (resulting in lost graphics and gray boxes replacing the lost graphics).
It only affects embedded graphics. There may be a Windows resource that has not
allocated enough memory. Any framers out there who have dealt with this on
Windows machines?

This error seems to only affect referenced graphics and I get it on a Windows 7
machine. It is an intermittent error. Adobe Support contacted me, but so far
there are no answers. Often, I can close the file, reopen it, and save it again
with no problem. I've seen it occur on small files and large file. I am using a
SaveAsMIF script to automatically create a MIF file when I save, but Adobe
didn't think that would cause the problem.

The error text is...

An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document The
file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please report this Error to
Adobe Technical Support.

[Framers] Frame 2015 error when saving

2016-07-13 Thread Norton, Michael
Using Frame 2015 (v13.0.3.495) on a Windows 7 box.

I am occasionally getting an error message with the following text when saving
a Frame file:

An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document
The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please report this
Error to Adobe Technical Support.

There are imported .png graphics in the file, but I have not been able to
isolate it to a single graphic. Most of the time, when the error occurs the
file is saved and looks fine. Often I will have no problem with the file, then
this error will pop up - without any changes to the graphics. A MIF wash seems
to make it go away, at least for a while. No real damage is done, but it is
getting annoying and you have a number of trash files to remove. I have the
latest updates to Frame installed. I also have Frame v10 and I don't think I
have ever seen this error in when using that version. Most, but not all of
these files were created in Frame v10.

Anyone else running into this?

PS. Adobe, if you are listening, when displaying an error message that directs
the user to report something to Support, an embedded link would be nice.

Re: [Framers] How to video: FM2015 and Responsive HTML5

2016-05-31 Thread Norton, Michael
Thanks for the presentation Bernard. I can think of one way to use that in the
products I document. I do have a couple of questions, however.

In your example it seemed as if the user would open a "default" HTML5 Help that
had both Word and FrameMaker information. The user would then choose between
Word or FrameMaker and then see the appropriate content. The initial view,
however, would not be useful to the user because it showed both sets of content
merged together.

Is there a way to make, for instance, the Word information the default and then
give the user the option of switching to the Frame (and other sets of content
if applicable)?

And also, can the HTML5 Help system remember your choice and make it the
default the next time you open that Help system?
