Round tripping commented PDF, using DITA

2013-01-24 Thread Steve Nelson

I'm running FM 10, using the DITA 1.2 xml topic templates.

Is there a way to merge comments from a PDF in such a way that they hit the
source xml files/topics? I suspect not, as the documentation seems to only
describe merging into a Framemaker document. A search of this list's
history seems to bear this out as well.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you.

This is what I do. I put User Variables in the footers of the master pages
for each file in a book (e.g. document name, publication date). Each file
in the book uses the same set of variables (even if they are not used in
that file). When updating a book, I update the appropriate variables in the
front page file, and then import variables from that file to all the other
files in the book. Only takes a minute or two.

I should have added that you need to place your reltable into the
 ubermap in that scenario.

  Ah, then I don't know.

If you're creating chapters separately and then combining them into
a book, that might be part of the problem.

You could try creating the chapters as submaps and then place them
in an uber map. That's what we do (we're still using FM 9, btw).
 When
 you
save the uber ditamap as an FM book with FM components, it creates a
books file, and the submaps are converted to chapters within the book.

RE: Xml editors?

2011-11-15 Thread Steve Nelson
Hello,
Thanks for the reply.
Oxygen does indeed look promising.
What would be the general method of enabling our engineers (mostly
electrical designers and technicians with no knowledge of xml, or time to
get under the hood) to author topics with Oxygen? How do I get Oxygen to
see/utilize the template and EDD I'm using in Framemaker? What template
files of mine do they need access to?

Thanks again.

Hi Steve

As Scott said, a free XML editor is fine to create basic DITA topics.
However, what will happen if they need to update the topics which you have
edited in FrameMaker, using DITA features such as conrefs, keyrefs, inline
elements etc.? Instead, you may want to use a good, professional XML editor
like oXygen XML Author, which is almost free (starting at $349). It gives
you plenty of bang for the buck and comes with some very nice transforms (to
WebHelp ePub etc.) out-of-the-box. We use it in combination with DITA-FMx
for authoring and publishing DITA 1.1 content.

Cheers

Xml editors?

2011-11-14 Thread Steve Nelson

Hello,
I'm using FM10 and the dita 1.2 templates.

There are several members of our engineering team who would like to be able
to contribute content to our user guides. Is it possible to let them use
free XML editors to build xml topics, so that I can then incorporate those
topics into my manual building process in Framemaker?

Thank you.

Framemaker 10/Ditamap odd behavior

Hello,
I have a ditamap that, when I do a simple save, Framemaker wants to save it

Hi Steve...

It sounds like this file *is* an FM file. Try forcing a save to XML (with a
.ditamap extension) overwriting itself and you should be OK. this happens
when FM crashes and you say OK to the prompt to open the recover file.

Image overlapping table borders?

2011-11-07 Thread Steve Nelson

Hello,
Using Frame10 and dita 1.2.
See attached screen grab from a PDF.
When I set up some images in tables, they look fine in the native XML file.
However, when I convert to composite FM and ultimately PDF, some of the
graphics overlap the table borders. Do I need to alter the table to include
more padding/spacing?

Thank you.

TOC formatting problem

2011-11-05 Thread Steve Nelson
I have a small mystery -- In the body view of my TOC, my title.0TOC
paragraph styles are being formatted as bold. However, in the reference
page, they are not bold (which is how I'd like them to appear).

Any idea what's going on here?

Thank you.

Proper positioning of dita topics on output

2011-10-27 Thread Steve Nelson

Hi,
I'm using Frame 10 to create dita files, and have noticed that there is a
delta between the positioning of topics in the topic file, versus on the
composite fm after having converted the ditamap.

Having worked in structured Framemaker previously, I'm familiar with a
creating a topic title style that would set the topic title to the top of
the next page (i.e., title.0_top) if necessary. However, it seems this
would not be of use in dita, where the topic positioning can always float
around, depending on the content preceding it.

Is there some way to tell Frame that, when there is a topic title
approaching the bottom of a page, and perhaps only one or two lines of
following content makes it to the page before the remainder of the topic
flows to the next page, to instead force that topic to start at the top of
the following page?

RE: Getting the title of each dita map to show up in output

2011-10-22 Thread Steve Nelson
Hi,
Thank you for the reply.
I did get it to do what I need to.

Saved each ditamap as a composite fm.
Created normal Frame Book.
Pulled the composite fm sections into the Book.
Etc...as per normal FM book build/pdf generation.

Not sure if this is optimal, but it's working for me at the moment. I do
plan on looking into ditaFMx in the near future.

Thanks again.

Hi Steve...

I don't think that you can. It appears that this build process is
hard-coded by FM. If you're using DITA-FMx, which uses a special Book
structure application to create the book from a map (from which you can
generate the PDF), you can modify the XSLT used to aggregate the map and
topic files into the output book, and you can set it up to include your map
title (not the default).
