interim, and it was _much_ better ... _far_ less manual fixing afterwards.

 S1000D is a documentation standard that was developed in Europe for
 military use, but is now being widely adopted by Aerospace companies

 central database. It's a nice vision of the future, but getting from
 here to there is the big (expensive) problem.
 
 FrameMaker 10 seems to have quite a lot of S1000D support built in, such
 as the means to interact with a common source database and the ability
 to validate data modules against business rules, etc., but we are having
 trouble making any practical use of it.
 
 Is anyone offering a course yet on using FrameMaker to support an S1000D
 implementation? We have been to some free seminars and watched plenty of
 Webinars, but they were mostly sales pitches on the benefits of the
 standard without any practical value. We need to move ahead with a real
 solution, because we have customers that are starting to request
 documentation that meets the new standard.
 
 I would love to hear from any of you trainers about what resources you
 have available. We would really like to keep using FrameMaker as the
 basis for our documentation, rather than start with something completely
 new. It would be a big plus if the training was available in the Seattle
 area.

A quick search of list archives back to 2007 doesn?t quite address this.

Where does one find, for a reasonable license fee, a set of Word macros /
VBA code, for managing (especially cleaning and applying) Word styles,
perhaps in the manner of Silicon Prairie Software?s:

?  Paragraph Tools

?  Character Tools

?  Table Tools ?

We cut our teeth on Frame and love it, but we?re making peace with Word
after completing an FAA project earlier this year. Just looking to automate
work that?s tedious and content-free so we have more time to focus on the
client.

We?re coming up to speed on QuickBasic after working in a C dialect for
years on unrelated work, so a sidestep to VBA won?t kill us. But we?d rather
drive a production car than a jalopy if we can pay the sticker price.

Fellow Framers,

I'm interested in learning to write scripts to run in Framemaker to 
automate/eliminate some of those tedious, repetitive tasks that seem to 
crop up.

I've been reading about Javascript on the W3Schools site and I found the 
Adobe Introduction to Scripting document, which is a good start, but I 
need more particularly about scripting in FM (I think).  In this Adobe 
document, it states Adobe provides scripting references for many 
applications. The references are located on you installation CD., 
however I downloaded my software online. There is no installation CD.

Does anyone have information about this set of documentation? Other 
recommendations for information to get me on my way?

Fellow Framers,

I'm interested in learning to write scripts to run in Framemaker to 
automate/eliminate some of those tedious, repetitive tasks that seem to 
crop up.

I've been reading about Javascript on the W3Schools site and I found the 
"Adobe Introduction to Scripting" document, which is a good start, but I 
need more particularly about scripting in FM (I think).  In this Adobe 
document, it states "Adobe provides scripting references for many 
applications. The references are located on you installation CD.", 
however I downloaded my software online. There is no installation CD.

Does anyone have information about this set of documentation? Other 
recommendations for information to get me on my way?

Here are answers to the software purchasing questions... Front Runner is
also an Adobe Software Reseller...

To answer Jim Pinkham's question...
If your company purchased a Maintenance package with FrameMaker you would
get updates/upgrades as they become available, provided the Maintenance is
current.


To answer Steve Johnson's question...
If a customer wants to do backward licensing, they order the current version
volume license of the product and the old ESD (Electronic Software Download
- one version back). Then they call Adobe Customer Care at 800-443-8158 to
request a serial number that matches the ESD.  They will need to provide the
Adobe order number for the current version order. Also, if they purchased an
upgrade license (for example, CS3 to CS5), they will also need to provide
the serial number of the original product they are upgrading from. It takes
a few days to get the old serial number.

This is a much easier process for someone who already has some volume
licenses of the product they want to install and just needs to buy more of
them. They don’t need to buy the old ESD unless they don’t already have the
old media. And they don’t need to call for a serial number; they just use
the old serial number they already have to install on additional
workstations.

Flare vs Frame

training session (with discounted rates for all attendees!) on RoboHelp
Essentials in Calgary. Neil Perlin, who presented at New Heights two years
ago, is the instructor.

Delivery: 
Bring your laptop so you can get hands-on training with RoboHelp in an
instructor-led, classroom style setup. (Don't forget to bring your power
cord.) Specifically, you'll need a laptop (and power cord) set up according
to instructions you'll receive a few days before the workshop. Basically, if
you're running RoboHelp 8 now, you're configured.

The Facilitator
Neil Perlin has 31 years experience in technical communication, with 25 in
training, consulting, and development for various online formats and tools
including WinHelp, HTML Help, JavaHelp, WebHelp, RoboHelp, Flare, and many
now known only in legend. Neil provided the STC Alberta's New Heights
seminar two years ago for Flare Help. Neil has a vast knowledge of other
HATs especially if someone is moving away from another HAT to RH.

Neil is a columnist for Intercom and the IEEE PCS journal, a frequent
speaker for STC local chapters and regional and annual conferences, IEEE
PCS, and other groups. 

Neil is a member of STC’s Boston chapter, he started and ran the Boston
chapter’s EDoc SIG from 1993 to 1996, created and manages the Beyond the
Bleeding Edge stem at the STC’s annual conference, represented STC for the
W3C (WorldWide Web Consortium) for three years in the early 2000s, and is an
STC Associate Fellow. He was named a Fellow for 2010.

Neil is Adobe-Certified for RoboHelp and Captivate. He provides training,
consulting, and development for online documentation and help.
