Re: [Framers] Insert Manual Line Break in a Variable?

2022-09-23 Thread docudoc
Refer to Appendix B of the Framemaker manual (with a title like "Typing in
Dialog Boxes") for a fairly complete list of the "escape" codes that allow you
to specify special characters in places like dialog boxes and variable
definitions where only plain text can be used.

I am not sure this got answered, but you can use \r in a variable to force a
page break.

Subject: [Framers] Insert Manual Line Break in a Variable?

WIN 10 Enterprise, Frame 2020

Can you insert a manual line break in a Variable? If so, how?

Example Variable: "Electrolyser (E-Series: E30-E1000)".

I want to control where the Variable breaks to wrap it to the next line
(it's part of a right-aligned title that is too wide for the page).

I looked in the Frame manual, but the term "manual line break" only occurs a
handful of times and none of them are relevant.

Re: [Framers] Save to PDF - Minutes turned into hours

2022-06-13 Thread docudoc
If I recall correctly, the need to do the 2-step PDF generation process ended
some time around FM 8.
It's also significant that neither part of the process was a "save as". The
first step was to Print to a PDF file, then Distill the PS to PDF using the
Adobe Distiller tool.
It's also significant to note that the 2-step process did not produce an
interactive PDF file. In particular, cross-references and coded hyperlinks are
not active links because the link information was not passed through to the PS
when you were "printing" a document or book.

Way back when, on FM 6, we also had problems with "Save to PDF". Adobe
recommended saving as a PostScript file, then saving that as a PDF.

Our company also is still using FM12. All was well until everyone was
upgraded to Windows 10 and the company wasn't willing to pay the
subscription price for upgrading FM from a 32 bit app to 64 bit. Save to PDF
was broken. After attempting to save two large books to PDF and ended up one
"no file"
and one that worked, I discovered that if I created a little dummy book (a
3-4 page) FM book and always did a save as PDF on it before doing the same
with a real book, the save as PDF worked. That was several years ago. I only
have to run the dummy book once during an FM session. Not sure why it works,
but it does.

I worked in Archives in my misspent youth, creating archival entries for new
collections. A side effect was learning to create great queries that have stood
me in good stead since the internet "came along".

A big exception is trying to find a specific way to do something in Frame,
either on the web or in the manual.

I would never have looked for "Typing in dialog boxes".

Thanks!

I didn't see the original query, but the answer is actually contained in almost
every edition of the hard-copy manual. Look in the appendixes for one called
"Typing in dialog boxes". This appendix contains tables listing all of the
"escape codes" for characters that cannot be typed directly with a single
keyboard keystroke. For the Windows version of Framemaker, the "escape"
character is the backslash, which is the first character of every one of the
listed codes.

The more I dig into long-unused memory to look for what I used to know about
FM, the less I find, because there's too much dust and rust in the way.
Instead, I try a Web search, and find how true it is that "nothing every dies
on the internet." Have you tried something like "framemaker non-breaking hyphen
in variable"? There's a ton of results. At least a few might be correct.
