Converting Older Frame Files to Frame 10: Cannot Lock File Error Message

2013-06-11 Thread todd . bersley

Hello Framers,

I just received a batch of 200+ FrameMaker 4, 5.5, and 6 files that I need
to get into Frame 10 and then convert into Word and PDF. However, when I
try to open them in either Frame 7 or Frame 10, I get the following error
message: Cannot lock this file for your use. Your changes to it may
conflict with the work of other users. File file path name.

When I click Continue the file opens, but I cannot edit it or use the Save
As button, since it is not available.

I tried changing permissions on all the files, which appeared to be
successful since they no longer indicate that they are read-only and the
security settings have grey checkmarks indicating I have write permissions.
After changing permissions, the error message no longer comes up, but I
still can't edit the files and do not have access to the Save As command.
But clearly, some setting in the old Frame file is prohibiting me from
editing the file. I can print a PDF file, and then use Acrobat to save it
into a Word file, but this is a very roundabout way to get these files into
Frame 10.

The Adobe forum had an entry on this issue, but the only response didn't
help much: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4298416.

Any suggestions on how to unlock them so I can use them in Frame 10?

BTW, is there a search function on the framers list to seek out topic
discussions that might be relevant? I only see the archive, which lists
items in chronological order.

Thanks for your help.

RE: Converting Older Frame Files to Frame 10: Cannot Lock File Error Message

2013-06-11 Thread todd . bersley

Thanks, Harro.

Unlocking the read-only FrameMaker file did the trick. Curious that in 15
years of using Frame, I hadn't encountered a locked Frame file. Now that I
know about it, I see this question has been answered a few times before.

You may have two problems:
1. file permissions in Windows
2. file set as read-only in FrameMaker.
You've solved 1.
for 2. the symptoms are missing menu items (you can't save or edit, and the
only menus shown are File, Edit, Navigation, Window, Help). To unlock a
file, type Esc Flk (note the uppercase F, lowercase L, lowercase K).

FrameMaker10 Graphics Problems and Strange Object Grouping Behavior

2011-11-09 Thread todd . bersley

Hello,

Our technical publications team recently upgraded from Frame 7 to Frame 10
(Version 10.0.1.408) included with the Technical Communication Suite on
Windows 7. Unfortunately, we are seeing a lot of crashes when we work on
graphics using Frame's drawing tools or when importing snapshots. We've
tried MIF washing all of our files, but we are still seeing frequent
crashes when working with graphics.

One specific problem that we are seeing is that Frame is having a hard time
grouping all objects in our often complex block diagrams. I have tried
selecting all of the boxes, lines, and text lines in a figure in order to
group them all, only to have one or more elements, which I thought I had
selected, remain ungrouped.

Does anyone have any guidelines on grouping to prevent this type of
problem? Or is this just a Frame bug that we have to live with until Adobe
comes out with a patch?

Also, does anyone know if Adobe is working on improving how Frame handles
graphics so that it doesn't crash so frequently?

I assume that Frame 10 is sending error reports to Adobe when these crashes
occur, but I can't seem to locate any information on this problem on
Adobe's support site. We're seriously considering going to an outside
drawing tool like Visio because Frame no longer seems like it can handle
complex block diagrams. And in the past we really like the Frame drawing
tools because they were easy to use, helped keep our file sizes smaller
since we weren't importing a lot of graphics, and looked sharper in our
online production than imported gifs or jpgs.

Any suggestions on managing graphics or using the drawing tools in Frame10
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help.
