The first time I ever saw FM, it was on a UNIX system, probably FM 2 or
earlier. The tech writer showing it off blew my mind by using FM's built-in
screen capture to shoot the screen and bring in the image, without missing a
beat in the content-creation process. IIRC, there was an option to copy or
import the captured image. So, we've seen generations and decades of regression
and feature loss, yet we stick with Ol' Faithful because it does its basic job
so well.

Yet, there's that other sticky issue - third-party providers whose tools don't
keep up with change.

You've been around long enough to know that this stuff happens, and that the
glitches which cause the frustration you've outlined here are NOT YOUR FAULT.
So, rather than drinking yourself into oblivion, pat yourself on the back for
having traced the issue to its core, and take pleasure in the gratitude of the
community's thanks for adding to our knowledge, so others don't have to
reinvent solutions for the problem.

Re: [Framers] Suddenly not working FM functionality? - also, a shout-out to Tech Support for being so responsive!!!!

2017-05-01 Thread Robert Lauriston
FrameMaker's original job was page layout.

The only reason it didn't go the way of Ventura Publisher and
PageMaker is that it evolved into an extensible tech docs platform.
Some companies (notably Boeing) built large systems around it. Others
used add-ons to turn it into a single-source tool.

I think it's behind the competition in every way except for the editor
giving you a good WYSIWYG preview of PDF / print output and getting
professional-looking PDF / print output that meets your company
standards without having to invest a lot of time in tweaking CSS and
pagination rules.

The finale of all of this:

It was a limitation, ultimately (pun intended), due to SnagIT on Windows 7
Ultimate. Very long story – but the only .pngs that would not open
automatically in SnagIT were those imported into FM 12. Outside FM12, no
problem and no problem w/ any pngs in FM12 opening in Windows Viewer, etc. So,
I reached out to TechSmith and demonstrated the issue and they agreed that it
was a limit/problem due to SnagIT and although it worked properly on Windows 7
Professional and therefore should on Windows 7 Ultimate, my version was no
longer a supported version. To offset the pain, they gave me the upgrade price
to the latest version (even tho’ I was like 3.x versions behind) and all is OK
in my little world again.

It’s time to drink heavily now . . . I have had enough of technical cr*p w/ the
setup of a new system, reinstalls, etc. I want a horse, tent, and carrier
pigeon. I am getting too old to deal w/ all these tech ins and outs!

Re: [Framers] Suddenly not working FM functionality? - also, a shout-out to Tech Support for being so responsive!!!!

2017-04-29 Thread Tammy Van Boening
HI Stefan,

All my files are referenced PNGs. Tech Support spent 45 minutes troubleshooting
yesterday w/ me and even had me do a brand new never before install of FM12 and
the same issue - double-clicking any graphic in FM10 or FM12 yields nothing.
However, all other programs on Windows 7 Ultimate work just as expected -
absolutely no issues and I can double-click any graphic that is NOT in an FM
file and it opens just fine in any program that I select as my default graphics
editor. But, once the same graphic is imported into an FM doc., double-clicking
yields nothing. The ONLY difference between my new system and my other 2
systems that do not have/never had had this issue is that my new system is
Windows 7 Ultimate and the others are Windows7 Professional. Yes, they are the
same underlying base code, but obviously, there is something that is different
enough to cause this problem and the tech support guy (didn't catch his name
fully) was wonderful and tested thoroughly and agreed that it was something w/
FM. (And yes, a registry check indicated absolutely NO problems w/ the registry
either)

Adobe Tech Support did call me immediately w/in the timeframe that I was quoted
and they have assured me that they will be testing this and trying to find a
cause and a resolution and they will get back to me by Tuesday, so thank you
for that!

I will keep you in the loop and let you know.

Thanks!

Hi Tammy,

Are your PNGs embedded or referenced?

I have just tested this on my machine on Win 10 with FM 2017. With a referenced
image, double-clicking the image in FM opens Photoshop. Then I changed in Win
10 in the settings in "Choose default apps by file type" .png from Photoshop to
Windows "Photos" app. Double-clicked the image in FM and it opens in ...
Photos! Changing back to Photoshop: Et voilà, it opens in Photoshop again. I do
not even need to restart FM for that.

Then I imported the same PNG with "Copy into document" (that is, not by
reference). Now double-clicking the image does not open any editor anymore.
Also the "Edit with" in the context menu is deactivated. This makes sense in
some way, I guess.

I have called support and I am awaiting a call back. We shall see. I have not
taken any Windows updates, etc. All was humming and then bang, but then the
problem even exists w/ a brand new install of FM 12 on the same system, so the
culprit is???

Thanks,

I'd call Adobe support. Or maybe just try resetting FrameMaker to its defaults
by closing the app, deleting maker.ini, and restarting.
