Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker 2015

2016-04-01 Thread David Artman
I'll just go ahead and chime in that I take all screen grabs with
Alt+PrtScn (or just PrtScn, for Desktop or full-screen captures)
because I do not have to capture scrolling windows or DirectX drawing
layers (which are the only things for which I'd use SnagIt).

As it is very rare for me to take images off my own system (i.e., I'm
more-often running VMs), I invariably have to paste the clipboard
contents into some art application (MS Paint is fine) and then save
with our formal, file-naming conventions for working files (a huge
string of descriptive elements, typically). I then can transport that
image file across the network to get it into my working folder.

As these are always taken and saved at 96 dpi, I never encounter
inconsistencies between authors who follow this SOP. It's only those
authors who (foolishly) re-scale the image in Photoshop or similar
applications to change its defined dpi without re-sampling it (which is
invariably lossy, when down-sampling; and which is invariably blocky,
when up-sampling). BUT, that defined dpi doesn't get honored in DITA
PDF output (driven by a default dpi variable in Antenna House) nor in
HTML output, so it's wasted time. INSTEAD, we scale for the PDF
deliverable using attributes in the DITA XML which, in turn, are
further manipulated for HTML output (e.g., thumbnailed at, say, 15% of
   96-dpi scale with click-to-zoom to 100%, 96-dpi scale).

FWIW, I've done screen-image processing this way (with irrelevant
variations) for over a decade. I can see no benefit to re-scaling a
screen capture image (why bother?); and I'd never re-sample a screen
capture image to change its apparent size (why destroy pixels?). I will
caveat that, however, by saying that if your deliverable MUST have the
absolute smallest possible file size (without using compression; e.g.,
a mobile site or app) then I would re-sample for the target pixel
dimensions using the best re-sampling algorithm available to me in my
art app (Nearest Neighbor or a Bicubic, in PS, depending on the nature
   of the screen).

   David

So maybe I am thinking about it wrong...
   I work with Kurt.
If I capture an screenshot with SnagIt and call it image.png, I can
   link it
into a FrameMaker 2015 doc at 150 dpi and it is a good size for the
   page.
Later, Kurt is editing the same doc, and the screen has changed so he
recaptures it on his computer and saves it in the same folder with the
   same
name. FM uses the new image at the same DPI, but it's twice as big. So
   he
resets it to 250 dpi and now it fits again.
Still later those pesky developers have changed the screen again, and
   this
time I have the doc. I recapture the image on my own computer and give
   it
the same name. FM uses the new image at 250 dpi, so my new image comes
   in
half as big as it should be and I have to reset the dpi setting again.
I just want some way to ensure that all of our images can come in at a
standard size so we can use a standard dpi setting.

FrameMaker ignores any DPI setting in a bitmap file in favor of its
own, doesn't it?

When I first used Flare, that was one of the differences that confused
me. And I had trouble finding the DPI setting in SnagIt.

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker 2015

2016-03-31 Thread David Creamer
Regarding the missing resolution setting in SnagIt...

PPI (aka dpi) resolution in screen captures is more of an illusion. Monitors
and software programs strictly work by x-pixels by y-pixels.
So a captured 600x600 pixel dialog box is always 600x600 pixels regardless
of the resolution applied to it.
At 100 ppi, it will display 6 inches across; at 300 ppi, it is 2 inches
across--the amount of actual data doesn't change.
PPI resolution is applied for getting better quality during printing (and
sometimes zooming in on screen).

If one needs a larger image with a higher ppi, one usually needs to resize
in Photoshop or similar program.
However, just increasing the resolution can yield a soft file since the
default settings are usually set for photos, not screen captures.
Typically, I use Nearest Neighbor to maintain the "crispness" of the
original capture, and save as PNG or LZW-compressed TIFF (never JPEG).

As far as websites go, they also work by x/y pixels, not ppi resolution.

There are many advantages and one huge disadvantage - Starting with SnagIt
10, the removed the capability to preset the resolution at which you
capture images.
There's a thread about it here:

What does the SnagIt plugin for FM9 do that you can't do in FM13 without it?

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker 2015

2016-03-30 Thread Pat Christenson
I'm using SnagIt with FM2015 and find it very easy to use. I've set up a
keyboard shortcut to launch it and that helps.

Hi,

Does anyone know of a screen capture plugin for FM2015?
(Or some another convenient method for taking and inserting screen captures?)

The SnagIt plugin with FM9 makes it easy to take, save, and insert a screen
capture.

I have not found an equally convenient tool or method for FM2015.

Adobe's RoboScreenCapture tool in Tech Comm Suite 2015 requires extra steps and
seems buggy when saving captures.
Judging from the 2006-2007 copyright dates I do not expect Adobe to update it
soon.

Re: [Framers] Taking and inserting screen captures in FrameMaker 2015

2016-03-29 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
I simply use SnagIt (think I am on version 12 point something) directly ... not
as a plug-in. I didn't know you could do that with it and FrameMaker in the
first place.

SnagIt itself works very, very well for my screen captures.
