RE: Copying large data sets into tables

2012-02-01 Thread Andy Smith (WFL)
Hi all

Thanks for all the support on importing tables from Word. In the end I went
through the process convert to text, import and then convert back to table.
There were a few frustrations of FrameMaker assuming the first line was a
heading line and I still haven't figured out how to switch that off but is
was no real trouble.

I also had an issue of embedding a small table in a single table cell, as my
client had laid out the source data, but I decided the recommended solution
was more trouble that it was worth and far too ugly so I set my table up
with enough cells to included the sub table and straddled the ones I didn't
need.

Cheers

Andy

I would open a copy of the Word file in Frame then copy the table
cells.

As far as the garbage that you get when opening a table from a Word
file, that's custom lines and shading that Frame adds when it
converts the Word file. To get rid of that, either select the entire
table and remove all borders and shading, or apply the desired table
format, then select the entire table and apply "From Table" to all
ruling of all cells.

If it isn't a complicated table layout, just convert it to paragraphs in Word,
paste the text into FM and convert it back into a table.

Re: Copying large data sets into tables

2012-01-31 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hi Andy

You can convert the table to text in Word, using a paragraph delimiter or
whatever. Then copy and paste the text into FrameMaker. Then select the text in
FM and convert it to a table (Table Convert to Table), using the same
delimiter. This works fine so long as there are no straddled (merged) cells in
the original table.

Before you do it, ensure that the ClipboardFormatsPriorities line in your
maker.ini file has TEXT as the first option. If not, either change it, or when
pasting use Edit Paste Special Text.

Hope this helps.

RE: Copying large data sets into tables

2012-01-30 Thread Owen, Clint
I have not tried this with FM10, but it worked in FM7 for huge tables.

Strip everything out of your Word doc except what you want to import.

From FM just import the Word doc, but use copy into document instead
of by reference. This is the only time I ever use that choice.

Then you need to format the results to fit your document.

Something I've done if the tables are not too complex in structure is:

In Word, convert the table to text.
Copy the data, and then paste it into FrameMaker.

In FrameMaker, select all of the data, and convert text to table.

You can't copy _into_ an existing FM table -- the underlying structures are
just too dissimilar.

Bring it into FM in one of the ways suggested by Rick, Nadine, and Tammy. Once
it's a nice, clean FM table, then you can copy/paste the rows into your
existing FM table.

Nadine's solution is OK if you only need to do this once or twice. But I'll
second Tammy's endorsement of Rick's TableCleaner plugin. It's invaluable for
cleaning up Word tables, and mighty useful for various global changes on native
FM tables, too.

Copying large data sets into tables

2012-01-30 Thread Owen, Clint
I have not tried this with FM10, but it worked in FM7 for huge tables.

Strip everything out of your Word doc except what you want to import.

>From FM just import the Word doc, but use "copy into document" instead
of "by reference". This is the only time I ever use that choice.

Then you need to format the results to fit your document.

HTH,

Clint

Subject: Copying large data sets into tables

Hi

Does anybody know if there is a quick way of copying large sets of table
data from a Word doc into a FrameMaker 10 table?

I've tried copying straight from the clipboard (Windows 7) but
FrameMaker reports "No table cells on the clipboard." I'm guessing that
this means that FrameMaker is expecting to be pasting from one
FrameMaker table to another FrameMaker table. I've also tried copying
via Notepad but I get the same result.

Surely there must be a way of importing table data from outside of
FrameMaker.

Any ideas?

Copying large data sets into tables

2012-01-30 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Andy,

Your best bet is to open (or import) the Word document with FrameMaker. It
will preserve the tables, but they will require some clean up. I designed my
TableCleaner plugin to automate some of the clean up of Word tables in
FrameMaker. For more information, see

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very
much.

Copying large data sets into tables

2012-01-30 Thread Writer
Something I've done if the tables are not too complex in structure is:

In Word, convert the table to text.
Copy the data, and then paste it into FrameMaker.

In FrameMaker, select all of the data, and convert text to table.

Copying large data sets into tables

2012-01-30 Thread Tammy Van Boening
I used this plugin to import and cleanup for a large number of tables in a
legacy Word document, and it worked like a charm even w/ all the garbage
that a legacy Word document can have (and it was a ton - - more like a
landfill's worth). And, if you are lucky enough to have styles in your Word
document, Rick also wrote a script for me that reads these Word styles in
your tables, and after import, applies the corresponding correct FM
paragraph style.

I have no financial gains from making this statement - just one very
satisfied customer.

Copying large data sets into tables

2012-01-30 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hi Andy

You can convert the table to text in Word, using a paragraph delimiter or
whatever. Then copy and paste the text into FrameMaker. Then select the text in
FM and convert it to a table (Table > Convert to Table), using the same
delimiter. This works fine so long as there are no straddled (merged) cells in
the original table.

Before you do it, ensure that the ClipboardFormatsPriorities line in your
maker.ini file has TEXT as the first option. If not, either change it, or when
pasting use Edit > Paste Special > Text.

Hope this helps.

Add me to the list of satisfied TableCleaner customers. It will pay for
itself the first time you have to do an import of tables from Word.
