RE: FM8 with SP3/FM9 SP3 or Windows7 - any problems? [P]

2010-12-15 Thread Milton, Cynthia
Classification: Serco Public

I have FM9 + XP SP3.

When importing Visio stuff I've found the best solution for me is to
export the Visio drawings as SVG for import to FM. Gives me a good
result. OLE's a nice idea, but can be a liability.

YMMV.

Orly,

not FM nor any OS or SP is the problem... the potential unreliable usage of OLE
is the problem and without knowing any detail I would suggest you redesign your
processes to avoid OLE.

 HI All,
I was wondering if anyone knows how FM8 handles embedded Visios (OLEs) with
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) or how FM9 handles them.

Currently, we work with TCS-FM8 on Windows XP with SP2 and have a load of FM
 files with embedded Visios.

As I understand, FM7 doesn't do well with this matter with SP3- I was
wondering what will happen if IT insists on upgrading us to SP3 or Windows 7.

We will have to change the way we work or is it not a problem?

 TIA,
 Orly.

There was a problem with OLE in Windows SP3, but Adobe fixed it in FM8.

I'll second Michael's advice. An occasional use of OLE may be OK, but using
lots of OLE objects is asking for trouble. I suggest you consider a change in
workflow.

Assuming you have the full version of Acrobat, its PDF Maker for MS Office does
a fine job of creating PDFs from Visio. Those PDFs can be imported into FM by
reference as files, not OLE objects. When you update the Visio drawing, the
only added step required is to click the Convert to PDF button.

RE: FM8 with SP3/FM9 SP3 or Windows7 - any problems?

2010-12-14 Thread Alison Craig

I use FM 9 not 8, but I do exactly what Richard suggests. I create PDFs of my
Visio files then import the PDFs by reference. It works really well, looks good
onscreen and the prints quality is excellent.
