I'm certain you could do this with a regular expression on exported MIF.
Search for strings that begin with # end of Para, and
contain the phrase in question, and in those strings replace with .

Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

2017-06-22 Thread Peter Gold
This is one of those knotty complexities of language that have fascinated
technical writers since those early scribes who wrote "Lorem Ipsum."

I think she wants to keep the text unchanged, but does want to change the
paragraph format of some paragraphs in which the text can be found with
Edit > Find/Change.

It's not just this particular need that identifies a long-time shortcoming
of FM's Find/Change feature, namely that it can't refer to the clipboard
for more than one instruction. Probably, it was also designed in the era of
those ancient scribes.

While MS Word's Find/Change may be smarter than FM's, it's interesting to
note that Adobe already owns a powerful and versatile Find/Change feature
in InDesign.

Also, included with InDesign is a Find/Change by List script that increases
its power, through the use of repeated searches executed by one click. For
example, a user can create a list of target paragraph tags (AKA "formats"
in FM, "styles" in ID,) to find and change those in which the target text
resides. For lots of info on this ID script, search Google for "find change
by list" with and without quotes (some different results.)

Perhaps someone on this list would like to write up and submit a product
enhancement request for upgrading FM's Find/Change abilities to equal those
of InDesign here:

Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

2017-06-22 Thread Craig Ede
My method assumes that you want to change the paratag that is being used on a
particular phrase. The simplest instance of that is when that phrase is the
only content in the paragraph. However, this works on paras that have other
text as well, but only if they use the paratag you want to change. The note at
the bottom of my earlier post flags the problem that might arise if your
document uses either another char tag or overrides of formatting that makes the
phrase appear with the same font characteristics as the paratag you are trying
to change.

It's a three step process (not two), but it does work and allows you to use
Change All rather than stepping through each instance one by one.

Try it on a simple file or fragment of your doc and you'll see it works.

Subject: Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

Try this:

Copy the phrase (without the paragraph marker at the end).

Do a replace selecting "Text and Character Formats on the Clipboard" in the
search item. [This ensures that the search is for the phrase with the font
characteristics of the paratag.]

Replace with a nonsense phrase used nowhere in the document, like "#$@@@$".
[The nonsense phrase is now a placeholder for your phrase, but in paragraphs
where you want to change the paratag.]

Copy to the clipboard an instance of the paragraph tag you would like to use
for the phrase. [This will be used in the next 'replace' action.]

Do a second replace, selecting text and using the nonsense phrase as the search
item and replace with the "By Pasting" option. [These options will format (by
paste) all paragraphs where you nonsense phrase now exists with the new
paratag.]

Do a Change All. [Your nonsense text now has the paratag you want.]

Do a third replace where you replace the nonsense phrase with the text you
started with (both search and replace items should be set to "Text"). [Since
this is a text replace, the original phrase goes back in, replacing the
nonsense phrase.

Note: This could fowl you up if the phrase is formatted with font
characteristics somewhere with a character format that mimics the format of the
original para format, but that is unlikely.

Good luck.

This should be simple using plain old search/replace. Modify the first instance
of the phrase to use the new paragraph tag, and then copy that phrase. Search
for the phrase and change by pasting. Use the pull-down to see the "By pasting"
option for changing. And, use Change All to make this painless.

Hello Framers,

I want to change all instances of a phrase using one paragraph tag to another
tag. I do not want to change all instances of the phrase (it occurs using other
tags), nor replace the current tag with the new tag (both tags remain in use).
The target phrase-tag combo occurs hundreds of times. Is this possible through
find/change or another automated method? Using FM 11.

Thanks very much,

Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

2017-06-22 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
Although FM does not have the feature of searching for a specific phrase
that has a specific paragraph/character tag, one thing to make the
search a little easier is to use the ALT key when searching.

In recent versions of FM, after clicking Find, the focus stays on the
Find/Change pod, so that you can keep pressing Enter to search for the
next item, or use the ALT keys repeatedly to search or replace.

What I'm suggesting is to type the search phrase, then hold down the ALT
key with your left hand, and place two fingers (of your right hand) over
the C and F keys. Press the F key to find the next instance of the
phrase and press C to make the change when the phrase has the correct
paragraph tag.

I think this much easier than using the mouse; less strain, and you
don't have to look at the Find/Change pod as you do this.

This only works in recent versions that do not change the focus back to
the cod after the search.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, but your assertion is not correct according to Karen's original query

According to what she wrote, she specifically *does* want to change the tag.
It's the tag and not the string she wants to change.

This should be possible in FrameMaker because it is possible to use Copy
Special to copy just the desired new paragraph tag and do a replace "By
Pasting" to apply the tag to the paragraph with the found string. The difficult
part is finding just the instances of the string that are in paragraphs with
the old tag since Frame does not support searching for both a tag and a string
in the same process. But it shouldn't be *that* bad to search for the string,
visually check the paragraph tag in the status bar, and manually choose either
"Change & Find" to perform the retagging or "Find" to skip to the next instance
of the string.

Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

2017-06-21 Thread Peter Gold
As I saw the range of suggestions, I wondered if I'd oversimplified the
issue by working from memory, since I haven't actually fired FM up for a
few years. So, I invoked FM 9 on WinXP SP2 under Parallels on my early 2008
MacBookPro, to see what's what.

Although your original statement of intention seems clear, there's one
possible ambiguity. Ooops, perhaps two ambiguities. One is that the text
string is the only content of the paragraphs whose tags you want to change.
The other is that the text string appears within other paragraph text.

The basic idea for both cases is similar - find the text and paste the tag.
If you don't want to replace all found instances with the new paragraph
tag, then you'll have to inspect each found instance and chose Change > By
Pasting, or Find Next to skip.

If the example text string is exactly the same in all target locations,
then there's no problem. In this case, you want to change the paragraph tag
where the target text resides, to a different paragraph tag; you're not
replacing text.

The process is easiest if you want to find and change all paragraphs where
the target text resides to the same new tag. For example, find "Abc text
string" in all paragraphs no matter how they're tagged, and change only the
tag to, say NewBodyTag, even if some of the target paragraphs are tagged
Body, or Head1, or WhateverTag.

Because of FM's limited Find/Replace feature, you need to do it this way:

* Use the Paragaph Designer to create a paragraph with the target format
tag name and properties. "NewBodyTag" in this case. Tag one paragraph with
this tag (old-timers like me still call this a "Paragraph Format.")

* Select the text string, copy and paste it into the Text area of the
Find/Replace dialog box. Or, manually type it in.

* Select an instance of the NewBodyTag paragraph format. Use Edit > Copy
Special > Paragraph Format. This puts NewBodyTag on the clipboard. FM's
limitation is that the Clipboard can only remember one item, regardless of
what category it belongs to - text, graphic, text property, tag, etc.

* Use Find/Replace to search for the text string, and choose Replace > By
Pasting to paste the NewBodyTag paragraph format; this doesn't change the
found text, it just changes the paragraph format.

Now, if you only want to change only those instances of the text string in
a paragraph that tagged with a specific format, not all instances of the
text string in all paragraphs, then you'll need to keep your eye on the
lower-left corner of the status bar, or the Paragraph Designer, to observe
the name of the currently-selected paragraph format. Click Change by
Pasting to apply the tag from the clipboard to the current paragraph, then
Find Next.

If this is a recurring need, going forward perhaps consider using a text
variable for the repeating text, or a new character tag (AKA Character
Format,) for the repeating text. IIRC, you can create a text variable that
incorporates a named character format.

I've not updated my FM, so I'm not sure if Find & Replace, and Edit > Copy
Special have gotten smarter. If anyone can comment, I'd like to know.
Thanks!

HTH.

That would replace all instances of the string, not only those in

You could do it on a MIF using regular expressions:

Karen

Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

2017-06-21 Thread Scott Prentice

Hi Karen...

The only way I can think of to do this would be via scripting of some
kind .. ExtendScript, FrameScript, or FDK (or Perl, Python, etc. on a
MIF file). If you don't find a reasonable solution, my FM2DITA plugin
may have an undocumented feature that could let you do this. If it's a
one-time thing, you could use a trial of this plugin to accomplish the
task ..

http://leximation.com/tools/info/fm2dita.php

Let me know if you'd like to explore this option, and I'll look into it
more to let you know how to do it.

Cheers,
...scott

Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

2017-06-21 Thread Grant Hogarth

Another way to do this would be to
1. Save as MIF.
2. Locate the first instance in a text editor (I prefer Notepad++)
3. Copy that string.
4. Search and Replace the string.
5. Save the MIF.
6. Reopen in FM.

Re: [Framers] Search for text + tag?

2017-06-20 Thread Pat Christenson
This is kind of a kluge and I haven't had time to test it but it might work. I
suggest making a copy of your doc first.

1. Find an instance of the string (I'll use abcd for this sample) in a
paragraph that you want to change.
2. Assuming the paragraph tag has unique font properties, copy abcd in that
paragraph. ***This won't work if the font properties of this paragraph tag are
the same as another paragraph tag used in the document.***
3. Set Find to Text & Character Formats on Clipboard.
4. Set Change to Text: abcd (be sure to include the "dummy" characters so
the changes are easily differentiated from just "abcd")
5. Change All.
6. Find (or create) a paragraph using the format you want to change to.
7. Copy Special - Paragraph Format.
8. Set Find to Text: abcd
9. Set Change to By Pasting.
10. Change All.
11. Set Find to Text:
12. Set Change to Text and make sure there's nothing in the Change field.
13. Change All.

Let me know if this works, please!
