Things like that. The current state of the FrameMaker docs is the
result of them being updated with new features release after release.
You should rewrite from scratch with a task-oriented focus.

--
While I'm inclined to agree--and as I acknowledge that 'cobblers wear no
shoes' and we'll never have perfect documentation about documenting with
FM--it is no mean feat to address every task that one might attempt in
FM. I'm not sure how I would begin, and I've used if for quite a while
(though not so long as many here).

What I think gives more bang for the buck--again, assuming we can't
have it all--is doing more and better work on the provided templates.

I should be able to open a template and:
* See every style applied somewhere, in real applications (with lorum,
if necessary) not just a word or two so you can click it, and DEFINITELY
not blank.
* See usage _explained_ when a non-obvious technique is employed (e.g.,
2pt height, -2pt above anchor lines; resetting numbering on list intro
headings NOT on stupid List 1/A styles!). [Yes, I know: it's high time
I insisted upon clients Structured FM!]
* See even more info on the Reference pages--would it kill you to
explain the all of the building blocks for Index or TOC tagging in a
text box on those Ref pages?!
* Compare and contrast with other templates with the same deliverables
goals, but different major style elements (e.g., step-level indentation,
which calls for TONS more List styles; or
Chapter-Page(-Figure/-Table/-etc) numbering which calls for use of
BOOK-level tools and/or Running H/Fs)

And so forth: A DITA project that I can immediately deploy, if I'm none
too picky about appearance yet. Maybe a structured application or five
that actually DO what 90% of all software and hardware companies need
(HTML Help, PDF-for-print, PDF-for-screen, ePub).

And I think you can save yourself the effort of delivering business
templates anymore, which will free up development time for those really
awesome, thorough, real-world-case templates. I mean, does anyone really
use FM for that, with Open/Libre/MSOffice totally dominating that
content generation space?

(TL;DR:)
I would rather learn by reading explications of actual, working template
files that are already 80% of the way to being what I need for any
publication, than reading empty instructions in a user guide. And when
I'm ready to use those working template files to build up content,
Ctrl+A, Delete removes all of the learning tools and samples, leaving
only clean pages (with H/Fs). And I'm not having to add fifty styles to
deal with real-world cases going forward.

Re: Hello

2012-07-27 Thread Robert Lauriston
Mike's complaint is that the docs are not comprehensive at the lowest level.

I'm more concerned about the docs not being comprehensive at the highest level.

What are the five (?) different settings I need to check to eliminate
blank pages? What is best practice for creating a template to
standardize a particular type of document such as a user guide or
release notes? How do I create a linked RoboHelp project from
FrameMaker source? How do I create my first DITA XML book?

Things like that. The current state of the FrameMaker docs is the

RE: Hello

2012-07-26 Thread Fred Ridder

In FrameMaker versions through 8.x (which is what I am still using for a
variety of reasons), the file for Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf was located in
the Documents folder of the FrameMaker installation directory. The FrameMaker
7.0 version of the document (which was distributed with 8.x software releases
as well as all 7.x versions) devotes some 18 pages to what is in the maker.ini
file and how it can be changed.

With the major UI changes that were introduced in FM9, it's probable that large
portions of the document became obsolete or incorrect, and it's possible that
the file was simply removed from the distribution rather than being brought up
to date.

Re: Hello

2012-07-25 Thread Mike Wickham

Hi, Gyanesh,

We are glad to have you participating here! In fact, since FM
development moved to India, it has been nice to see that several members
of the team have become active in the community and responsive to it.
Thanks!

One shortcoming that I have always found in Adobe documentation (and not
just FM documentation) is that it so often fails to document some things
that should obviously, and by default, be covered. For example, EVERY
menu command, EVERY preference setting, and EVERY dialog option should
be well described. Yet, these are often completely omitted from the help
files.

For example, FM11's Reviewer's Guide says that FM11 now includes a
Hunspell dictionary option in preferences, in addition to the Proximity
dictionary. But looking at the new FM11 online help, I searched for
Hunspell and nothing could be found on it. There appears to be no
information to tell users why they would choose one dictionary over the
other. This is a preference setting, so it should be described in help.

The Reviewer's Guide also talks about Improved handling of placed
graphics, and mentions the new RemoveGeneratedFacetsForTypes= setting
in maker.ini. But searching online help for that setting turns up
nothing. (Perhaps it is documented in maker.ini itself, but I'm still on
FM10 and don't currently have FM11 to look.)

The Reviewer's Guide also mentions, under New Equations and Anchored
Frame behavior, that anchored frames are now saved as individual MIF
files, but there is a setting to revert to previous behavior:
DefaultvVectorFormatForXMLExport=CGM. Again, a help search for this
setting turns up nothing.

Which reminds me, one thing FM help has always lacked is full
documentation of maker.ini settings. Every setting in maker.ini should
be documented. Some are documented in help. Some are documented in
maker.ini itself (though often poorly). Many settings are documented in
the Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf-- but, if I recall correctly, that
file is no longer included on distribution disks, so many FM users don't
even know that it exists! (And the downloadable version that exists is
labeled as for FM7!) But many settings remain completely undocumented,
including settings that, by default, are not included in maker.ini. So
users don't know the settings are available.

I would also add that, while I do see the advantages of online
documentation being updatable and searchable, I miss printed
documentation. The nice thing about a printed version is you can sit
down with a manual and just read it to learn about things you wouldn't
have thought to browse for in help. Adobe should consider creating
print-on-demand (POD) versions of its documentation to satisfy that
need. I think they may have done this previously with Creative Suite
documentation. There was a time you could order printed copies of CS
documentation in the Adobe Store-- though often a ridiculous six months
or more after the product release! I used to order those when they were
available.

Re: Hello

2012-07-25 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Mike,

Thank you for mentioning these points. I did not have the opportunity to
partake in the testing of FM11, but I am very happy to see that Hunspell is
now an option, something I requested several years back. I will use the
first opportunity I have to download FM11 and test the Hunspell dictionary
which is regularly available to so many languages, even mine!

I am also happy to see how active some of the developers' team are on this
list.

But I also agree that the Adobe software documentation is far from
adequate. In the past this has been something that many have requested to
be improved. The documentation is in fact so meager that it may be
misinterpreted as patronizing (i.e.: If you need more documentation than
this, you are just a looser. Or something along that line.) It is IMHO
embarrassing for Adobe to see that some (a few) customers stumble upon
something that can be done, or that they find out after digging and
digging, and Adobe has no mention of these things. Do they really expect
the customer to have to spend their time almost reverse engineering their
software to find out what is installed?

I am also confident that improved documentation will increase the number of
Adobe customers. Why? Do I need to answer that?

Customizing_Frame_Products.pdf can be found here:

or the FrameMaker Development Center page itself:

Akilan,

First, you would receive more and possibly better responses if you
post to the Adobe User-to-User forum or join and post to one of the
Framemakers mailing lists or frameusers.com omsys.com

Second, I'm not an XML expert, but if your elements also use Frame
paragraph tags, you need to set the Pagination of the tag to Run In
Head.

An alternative would be to have tab stops separate each element rather
than returns.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
