If you find that none of the Zapf Dingbats look like a checkbox, or you don't want 3-d checkboxes, or you don't want to mess with vertical registration, here's an orthogonal approach. Set your checklist as a two column table. Turn off all ruling, and make the left-hand column the width of the checkbox you want. Place anchored frames in the left column, and use FrameMaker's graphics to draw a [plain] checkbox. Failing that, just draw the checkboxes in an anchored frame and set it to run in to the paragraph on the left, and set the para's left indent to match the checkbox's width. In my view this gives a checklist that is more representative of checklists generally than using dingbat fonts, which tend not to have plain squares (although I think Wingdings does). -- Steve ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

Re: Substituting a check box for a bullet in FrameMaker
Pretty easy Create a new character format with everything set to AsIs except the font, which needs to be ZapfDingbats. Then modify the Bullet para tag slightly: change the Autonumber string to something like this, so that it contains a lower case o: (o\t). Paint the o with the new Zapf character format and save as a new para tag. Paint the tab stop with the Default character tag so you switch back to a text font after the box. Save again. That's it. Re: Substituting a check box for a bullet in FrameMaker
Karyn, I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but the way we handle it is: 1. Set up a new character format using the desired font that contains the kind of checkbox you want to use. 2. Set up a new paragraph format using autonumbering with the character format you set up in step 1 and with the keystroke required for the desired bullet in the autonumber format field. Be careful the font you choose for the bullet, because the size required for the bullet to be as large as you want versus the size you use for the font of the paragraph itself can have some odd effects on the line spacing and vertical centering of the bullet by the paragraph text. Good luck! Rene Karyn Hunt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All, I want to put a check box in front of a list of items to create a checklist. How can I do this in FrameMaker? The Zapf Dingbats font will work _if_ you have it installed on your PC. If it's only available to you on a PostScript printer, then you won't be able to use it to create PDFs. Another possibility is the Wingdings font, which is pretty near ubiquitous on Windows PCs. In either of those fonts, there are four 3-D box characters you might use: lower-case o, p, q, and r. For other font/character options, fire up Character Map and look at whatever symbol fonts you have installed. I don't know what Art meant by Paint the o -- I'm only familiar with format painting as a Word feature. In FM, on the Paragraph Designer's Numbering tab, you apply a char format to the autonumber by selecting it under Character Format. It applies to the entire autonumber string. There's no need (or ability) to apply Default Pgf Format to the tab; the char format you choose affects only the autonumber string. HTH! Richard -- Richard G. Re: Substituting a check box for a bullet in FrameMaker
Richard, It's possible to select different parts of the autonumber string and apply a character format to 'em so you can affect format changes within the string. For instance, by painting part of the checkbox string, you can invoke Zapf (or whatever) and then change fonts so whatever comes after that uses a standard text font. Hence, you can paint the o with a character format. Art Campbell wrote: Richard, It's possible to select different parts of the autonumber string and apply a character format to 'em so you can affect format changes within the string. Not in FM 6 or 7. Is this one of the big enhancements in 7.2? It didn't make Adobe's key new features list. :-) For instance, by painting part of the checkbox string, you can invoke Zapf (or whatever) and then change fonts so whatever comes after that uses a standard text font. Hence, you can paint the o with a character format. I created a pgf and opened Paragraph Designer. On the Numbering tab, I typed test format into the Autonumber Format box and clicked Apply. Those words appeared at the start of my pgf in the pgf's default font. In the Autonumber Format box, I selected the word test only. Then, under Character Format, I selected Emphasis, and then I clicked Apply again. The entire autonumber string (test format) became italic. So, I selected the word format only, selected Default P Font, and clicked Apply again. The entire string returned to regular (Roman). In every FM version I've used, from 4 to 7, a char format can only be applied to the entire autonumber string. In any case, there's simply no need to revert to the standard text font -- the pgf itself, after the autonumber, is never affected by autonumber char formatting. Richard -- Richard G.
