Translating FM files into Japonese

2013-06-29 Thread Ragnar Hanås
Hello,

He probably refers to the Trados filter S-tagger that converts FM files to
Word (rft) files with colored tags. The translator will just translate the
text in between the colored tags, and then you can convert back into
Japanese with S-Tagger. I did that with Japanese many years ago. The
learning curve can be a bit tricky, bit is really rather straight-forward
once you get used to it. You would need to install Japanese fonts as well.
The problem is that Trados does not sell this as a standalone program
anymore, so you would have to purchase the whole Trados package. Therefore
is seems better that the translation agency who probably already has a
Trados license does the S-Tagger work as well.

Subject: Translating FM files into Japonese

Hi,

We have located a translator in Japan to translate a 300-page training
booklet written in English. The document is very largely table based with
typically an image in row 1 and the caption underneath in row 2 with
straddled narrow columns containing arrows to show a sequence of actions.

The translator is charging reasonable translation costs and then there is an
additional 12$/page cost because the files are from FrameMaker. When we
questioned that cost, he asked if we could provide files in Trados format.
Maybe he is not familiar with FrameMaker files.

Anyway, I find this strange as in the past I have always provided FM files
and the company doing the translation took care of everything else on their
side. I received my Fm files translated into the target language from which
I made PDFs.

Can anyone familiar with translating FM files explain why the individual is
requesting files in Trados format? Can that be done ? just pay a company to
generate Trados files from FM files?

Many thanks (cold and wet here in Quebec City at 10 Celcius),

RE: Translating FM files into Japonese

2013-06-28 Thread Alastair Dent
It is very strange indeed and I doubt that your translator is experienced.

Trados is a translation tool. It is normal for the translators to import files
into Trados and export as appropriate.

Send them the files in rtf format and save yourselves a bundle. Or find a
translator who knows what they are doing.

Hi Stephen,
I am just now having a 200pp largely table-based book translated into
Japanese by GlobalVis: http://www.globalvis.com/.
They are working directly from my unstructured FM11 files with no trouble
and the output is making our Japanese sales engineer very happy. They
handle all the translation memory work themselves; I did not need to get
involved in that at all.
In fact, the translation project carried on without a hitch while I took a
2-week vacation.

RE: Translating FM files into Japonese

2013-06-28 Thread Jaime Zuniga
Hi Stephen,

They may be trying to cut down on the prepping of FM files for translation,
sort of like an engineering cost. I would think that a price of $12 p/p would
be for the prepping AND the formatting of the FM files after translation. By
them asking you for Trados files it takes care of the prepping part and most
probably assumes that someone else will do the formatting.

The additional cost would be to import the translated files into FrameMaker and
check the page layouts, correct the pagination, set up a Japanese template etc.

Trados can import and export MIF files, but not .fm files. If you provide the
MIFs to the translator and he sets up Trados appropriately [1], he should be
able to translate the files, then it's up to you to convert them back and do
the layout checks.

1: there are some settings he needs to do so that Trados can differentiate
between editable text and FM tags. If this isn't done correctly, the translator
can corrupt autonumbering, cross-references etc.

I have handled translation for up to 17 languages for my company and have only
ever seen a per page cost quoted for final DTP preparation (I haven't done
Japanese at this job, but we do translate into Chinese).

As you say you do the final PDFs then obviously your translation firm isn't
doing the DTP.

Any professional translation firm will already own TRADOS and/or other
translation prep tools, so if they are asking you to do this, then they sound
lazy or unprofessional.

If you want to contact me off list, I can steer you to some better firms with
decent processes and reliable work (my company is a medical device company and
there are heavy duty requirements for translations firms to qualify to
translate our docs).

Maybe he is not familiar with FrameMaker files.

Anyway, I find this strange as in the past I have always provided FM files and
the company doing the translation took care of everything else on their side. I
received my Fm files translated into the target language from which I made PDFs.

Can anyone familiar with translating FM files explain why the individual is
requesting files in Trados format? Can that be done - just pay a company to
generate Trados files from FM files?

Translating FM files into Japonese

2013-06-28 Thread Alastair Dent
It is very strange indeed and I doubt that your translator is experienced.

Trados is a translation tool. It is normal for the translators to import files
into Trados and export as appropriate.

Send them the files in rtf format and save yourselves a bundle. Or find a
translator who knows what they are doing.

Hi,

We have located a translator in Japan to translate a 300-page training booklet
written in English. The document is very largely table based with typically an
image in row 1 and the caption underneath in row 2 with straddled narrow
columns containing arrows to show a sequence of actions.

The translator is charging reasonable translation costs and then there is an
additional 12$/page cost because the files are from FrameMaker. When we
questioned that cost, he asked if we could provide files in Trados format.
Maybe he is not familiar with FrameMaker files.

Translating FM files into Japonese

2013-06-28 Thread John Sgammato
Hi Stephen,
I am just now having a 200pp largely table-based book translated into
Japanese by GlobalVis: http://www.globalvis.com/.
They are working directly from my unstructured FM11 files with no trouble
and the output is making our Japanese sales engineer very happy. They
handle all the translation memory work themselves; I did not need to get
involved in that at all.
In fact, the translation project carried on without a hitch while I took a
2-week vacation.

Translating FM files into Japonese
