Save FrameMaker 8.0 files to 6.0

2010-07-06 Thread Clara Hall
I am doing some freelance work in FrameMaker. One of the requirements is
that the work be done in FM 6.0. I am currently working with FM 8.0. Is
there a way to develop in 8.0 and then somehow save the files to be
compatible to 6.0. Maybe saving them as a mif files? Would that work?

Also, does anyone know where I could get a copy of FM 6.0?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Does anyone remember Microsoft Photo Editor. Trying to get photos,
screen captures, any graphic out of Word using everything I have learned
over 16 years being a technical writer never worked. One day I happened
to be on one of the old computers at my home and Microsoft Photo Editor
was installed, so I put the Word file on the old computer, opened it,
copied a graphic from it into Photo Editor by selecting Edit then Past
as New Image in Photo Editor and VOILA, I could save as .BMP, .JPG, etc
with NO QUALITY LOSS. I use the method to this day. Hope everyone finds
this helpful.

 Pat,

The best way I have found to do this is to print the Word document to
PDF, then use Acrobat to extract the applicable pages and crop away
everything except the graphics you need. Then the PDF becomes your
source file for the graphics. This works no matter what the original
graphic format was or how they got into Word.

 Hi -

I have approximately 2000 pages to convert from Word to Frame. The
graphics are embedded but the client wants them imported by reference
in Frame. I tried extracting them from Word by saving a file as HTML

but the graphics became blurry and unusable. They look fine when I
open the Word file in Frame.

Is there a way to extract graphics from Word without losing quality?
Or a utility that converts embedded graphics in Frame into imported-
 by-reference?

 Thanks for any help.

Re: Extracting embedded graphics from Word

2010-07-06 Thread Gaghan, Steven P.
Hi All,
Another way to get the graphics involves using Word 2007.

1. Create a copy of the file saving it using the .docx extension.

2. Go to the folder where you saved the docx.

3. Change the file extension from .docx to .zip. For example,
sample.docx would become sample.zip. A zip file is created.

4. Extract the contents of the zip file.

5. Open the extracted folder, and go to word media. All of the images
used in the document are in the media folder in their original file format.
The original names of the images are lost, but you have all of the images in
one folder.

I hope that helps!

Thanks,

Steven P. Gaghan

FM stopped crashing

2010-07-06 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
FM9 used to crash on me very often when I would open the Condition Text
dialog box, and possible others. I tried something, and so far I don't
think I've had a single crash. It's been about a week, so I think it's
worth sharing.

I used to have several dialog boxes combined into one strip, taking
advantage of FM9's new capabilities. Well, I tried separating all of
them into separate dialog boxes and since them I haven't had any
crashes. I still have the Paragraph, Character and Table Designer
together, and I haven't had any problem.

Just thought I share this with the list.

Unavailable fonts

2010-07-06 Thread Kristen Abbott
Hi Framers,

I'm sure someone has posted a response to this question, but
unfortunately the archive isn't searchable. (Hint...)

Anyway, I'd like to know of a way to remove and replace all the
unavailable fonts in a FM file *before* I open it and see the There are
unavailable fonts message. My only options at that point are to click
OK, in which case it does the replacements, or Cancel, in which case it
doesn't open the file. Even if I let it do the replacements, the FM
Console window shows that it replaced FontX with FontY. How can I get
rid of FontX ahead of time?

Even though I have changed all the Para tags to use only available
fonts, the message appears every time I open the file, regardless.
Annoying.

Any help is welcome.

Thanks-

Kristen

You can search the archives using Google. Enter search string
site:lists.frameusers.com (sans quotes).

Anyway, I'd like to know of a way to remove and replace all the

You want to magically modify the file without opening it? No can do. :-)

You can get rid of FontX with the file open by finding where it's hiding. The
archives have lots of detailed info on that, but some of the popular hiding
spots for fonts are the reference pages and the pgf tags used in the table
format defaults. But before spending lots of time searching, see below.

Even though I have changed all the Para tags to use only available
fonts, the message appears every time I open the file, regardless.
 Annoying.

If you're certain you want to banish FontX forever, and permanently replacing
it with FontY is OK, go to File Preferences General and turn off Remember
Missing Font Names. The next time you open the file with FontX, FM will display
a slightly different unavailable fonts dialog asking you if it's OK to
permanently replace FontX with FontY. If you click OK, FontX is gone for good.

If this sounds appealing, but you'd rather replace FontX with FontZ, that can
be done by modifying the unknown to known fonts section of the maker.ini file.
The Customizing FrameMaker manual has info on doing that.

Re: Unavailable fonts: more or less resolved!

2010-07-06 Thread Kristen Abbott
Thanks to both Richard Combs and Art Campbell for their suggestions. I
did also spend a bit of time trolling through the archives the hard way,
before they sent me some easier search tips (thanks, guys!), and had
already found the 'turn off remember missing fonts' tidbit.

That helps, and I did also look on the Master Pages and Ref Pages and
didn't find anything obvious. But I bet you're right, it could be
lurking there.

As for mucking in the .ini file, I just might try that! I'm peeved
enough (and determined enough) to root around in there.

Thanks for the help! This is a great list.

Save FrameMaker 8.0 files to 6.0

2010-07-06 Thread LW White

Hi Clara,

Yes, if you save the files as .mif files or .rtf files, they should be openable
in Frame 6.0, but perhaps not pristine, due to the large version gap. Any
post-6.0 functionality will be lost, so you'll need to be careful not to use
any of that functionality. As for where to get a copy, that's a tough one. I
would suggest e-Bay or craigslist or somewhere like that. It's 8- or 9-year-old
software, after all. For kicks, I Googled FrameMaker 6.0 purchase and got
several promising links.

Good luck,

Re: Save FrameMaker 8.0 files to 6.0

2010-07-06 Thread Scott Prentice
It looks like there are currently 3 auctions on eBay for FM6 .. one for
Windows, Mac, and Unix. Just enter FrameMaker 6 in the search field.

eBay can be a good place to get old versions of software, but you do
take your chance at getting something bogus. Be sure to check out the
seller to see that he/she looks reasonably legit, and it's best if they
accept refunds. That's not always possible, but if you do get a bad disk
or something that's not as described, you can dispute it via PayPal
(assuming you use PayPal to pay .. which I'd recommend for eBay purchases).

Just be sure that the CD comes with a serial number.

Cheers,

Re: Save FrameMaker 8.0 files to 6.0

To a degree. You can save as FM7 MIF, and FM6 can open the result,
but it's not what you'd get from creating the docs in FM6. Watch
out for numbering strings in particular. FM8 uses Unicode, FM6
uses FrameRoman encoding (similar but not identical to older
Mac encoding). In some cases, for example bullets, you may see
the Unicode for the bullet rather than the FrameRoman. It's
not the way I'd want to deliver work to a client if I couldn't
check it in FM6 myself first.

Also, does anyone know where I could get a copy of FM 6.0?

eBay is usually the best bet. Try to get an *unopened* copy,
to avoid problems with software already registered to someone
else. Another, much more expensive, option is to join the
Adobe Transactional Licensing Program:
 http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/volumelicensing/tlp/

Adobe's Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) 5 makes
it easy to get volume pricing with no membership
requirements and no agreements to sign. This program
is available worldwide to commercial, education, and
government organizations and covers most Adobe desktop
 products.

You can then buy FM9 and downgrade to 6 (or any other
earlier version) with official blessings. This makes a
lot of sense for companies who already have large Frame
installations and just need one or two added copies;
they don't have to upgrade everyone (not financially
possible in most cases these days) or else switch to
Word. ;-) They can just get one or two licenses and
downgrade to match the rest of their installed base.

Note that you *cannot* downgrade if you purchase the
copy of Frame any other way (like retail). You must
use the TLP.

Unresolved text inset book errors

2010-07-06 Thread Timothy DeWees
I just replaced a bunch of text insets in a book with new text inset files.
I deleted the old text inset files from the folder which are no longer being
used. Everything seems to be working fine, but when I regenerate the book, I
get a stream of unresolved text inset errors listing the file names for
those insets I deleted. However, those are no longer in use. When I do a
book search for unresolved text insets, the search does not find any. I can
even generate a pdf and everything looks fine. So there doesn't seem to be
an actual problem, it is just annoying that every time I regen the book, I
get this long list of errors. Any ideas? Thanks.

RE: Unavailable fonts

2010-07-06 Thread Lizak, Samantha
Richard suggests just turning off the Remember missing font names. In
the past, I have had unavailable fonts turn up in legacy documents where
that trick did not work.

If the font is in an default paragraph format of an unused table type,
save the file as .mif and search on the font name. You can either change
it there, or simply remove the table type definition from the mif.

If you save as .mif and the font does not show up, chances are it is in
an imported graphic. Some types seem to carry font information in their
metadata, even though the text is not separately selectable. The
fast-and-dirty workaround (because of course this always turns up when
you are trying to meet a deadline) is to take a screen capture of the
graphic and replace the offender. (Captures from PDF usually look better
than captures from the FM itself, if you have a decent PDF around.)

Incidentally, I am guessing you want to run this check before opening
the file because you have a script that batch processes the files. (We
do, too.) If there is a way to do this, the guys that maintain our batch
scripts haven't lit on it; the scripts exit with an informative error
instead. And that is why I have gotten good at hunting these things
down. :-)

Regards-

Sam.

You want to magically modify the file without opening it? No can do. :-)

You can get rid of FontX with the file open by finding where it's

searching, see below.

Even though I have changed all the Para tags to use only available

 Annoying.

If you're certain you want to banish FontX forever, and permanently
replacing it with FontY is OK, go to File Preferences General and
turn off Remember Missing Font Names. The next time you open the file
with FontX, FM will display a slightly different unavailable fonts
dialog asking you if it's OK to permanently replace FontX with FontY. If
you click OK, FontX is gone for good.

If this sounds appealing, but you'd rather replace FontX with FontZ,
that can be done by modifying the unknown to known fonts section of the
maker.ini file. The Customizing FrameMaker manual has info on doing
that.

re:missing font names

2010-07-06 Thread Rob Wallis
Hello all.
If you open the document and let the substitution happen, then check the
console to get the missing name, do a character format search for that
font in the document. It should appear greyed(grayed)out.
Then you can remove the offending characters and that should
permanently fix the problem.

Cheers

Unavailable fonts: more or less resolved!

2010-07-06 Thread Kristen Abbott
Thanks to both Richard Combs and Art Campbell for their suggestions. I
did also spend a bit of time trolling through the archives the hard way,
before they sent me some easier search tips (thanks, guys!), and had
already found the 'turn off "remember missing fonts"' tidbit.

For kicks, I Googled "FrameMaker 6.0 purchase" and got
several promising links.

Good luck,
Leigh

Save FrameMaker 8.0 files to 6.0

2010-07-06 Thread Scott Prentice
It looks like there are currently 3 auctions on eBay for FM6 .. one for
Windows, Mac, and Unix. Just enter "FrameMaker 6" in the search field.

eBay can be a good place to get old versions of software, but you do
take your chance at getting something bogus.

Cheers,

...scott

To a degree. You can save as FM7 MIF, and FM6 can open the result,
but it's not what you'd get from creating the docs in FM6. Watch
out for numbering strings in particular. FM8 uses Unicode, FM6
uses "FrameRoman" encoding (similar but not identical to older
Mac encoding). In some cases, for example bullets, you may see
the Unicode for the bullet rather than the FrameRoman. It's
not the way I'd want to deliver work to a client if I couldn't
check it in FM6 myself first.

>Also, does anyone know where I could get a copy of FM 6.0?

eBay is usually the best bet. Try to get an *unopened* copy,
to avoid problems with software already registered to someone
else. Another, much more expensive, option is to join the
Adobe Transactional Licensing Program:
 http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/volumelicensing/tlp/

Adobe's Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) 5 makes
it easy to get volume pricing with no membership
requirements and no agreements to sign. This program
is available worldwide to commercial, education, and
government organizations and covers most Adobe desktop
 products.

You can then buy FM9 and downgrade to 6 (or any other
earlier version) with official blessings. This makes a
lot of sense for companies who already have large Frame
installations and just need one or two added copies;
they don't have to upgrade everyone (not financially
possible in most cases these days) or else switch to
Word. ;-) They can just get one or two licenses and
downgrade to match the rest of their installed base.

Note that you *cannot* downgrade if you purchase the
copy of Frame any other way (like retail). You must
use the TLP.

It is telling when someone thinks worthy of note to say that their
application has *stopped* crashing ;)

Unresolved text inset book errors

2010-07-06 Thread Timothy DeWees
I just replaced a bunch of text insets in a book with new text inset files.
I deleted the old text inset files from the folder which are no longer being
used. Everything seems to be working fine, but when I regenerate the book, I
get a stream of unresolved text inset errors listing the file names for
those insets I deleted. However, those are no longer in use. When I do a
book search for unresolved text insets, the search does not find any. I can
even generate a pdf and everything looks fine. So there doesn't seem to be
an actual problem, it is just annoying that every time I regen the book, I
get this long list of "errors". Any ideas? Thanks.

Tim

Unavailable fonts

2010-07-06 Thread Lizak, Samantha
Richard suggests just turning off the "Remember missing font names". In
the past, I have had unavailable fonts turn up in legacy documents where
that trick did not work.

(We
do, too.) If there is a way to do this, the guys that maintain our batch
scripts haven't lit on it; the scripts exit with an informative error
instead. And that is why I have gotten good at hunting these things
down. :-)

Regards-

Sam.

You can search the archives using Google. Enter "search string
site:lists.frameusers.com" (sans quotes).

You want to magically modify the file without opening it? No can do. :-)

You can get rid of FontX with the file open by finding where it's
hiding. The archives have lots of detailed info on that, but some of the
"popular" hiding spots for fonts are the reference pages and the pgf
tags used in the table format defaults. But before spending lots of time
searching, see below.

> Annoying.

If you're certain you want to banish FontX forever, and permanently
replacing it with FontY is OK, go to File > Preferences > General and
turn off Remember Missing Font Names.

The Customizing FrameMaker manual has info on doing
that.
