Re: Frame 9 buggy - Frame 10 as bad? Frame 11 on horizon?

2012-01-06 Thread Roman Banks
Hi Gay,

Surprisingly, FM10 is much more stable than FM9. It does crash from time to
time, but not as often as FM9 did. An additional advantage of FM10 is the
introduction of the Extendscripts. If you have a good command of Javascript,
you will rule!

Hello Framers,
I use conditional text a lot.  A LOT.  Frame 9 seems to crash on a daily,
sometimes hourly, basis. Others in my department haven’t experienced this
behavior, but don’t use conditional text like I do. The “.recover” files drive
me crazy because I always feel I should compare them to the source .fm file,
but even FM warns against using .recover files. And of all the times I
laboriously made comparisons, I found exactly once when the source doc was
missing something in the .recover file.
Anyway, I’m not really writing to vent, more to ask if Frame 10 is any better
when it comes to conditional text – my brief research leads me to believe 10
fixes a lot of the problems in 9 but introduces new ones. So this may be a case
of the known devil…
There’s a possibility we can upgrade soon, but now I’m wondering if we should
wait another year (?) till FM 11.  Frankly, I lobbied so long and hard to make
the move from Word to FM (7.2) but ever since upgrading to 9, I’ve regretted it.
Parenthetically, we’re also curious about the output to various versions of
online help in 10.
Any opinions or experiences you care to share will be received with interest
and thanks.

No problem. I knew it was holiday time.

Here is where the toc_breaker.dll file is:

J:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\fminit\Plugins

(Odd drive letter because my system is set to dual boot between Win XP and

Hi Linda,

Many apologies for the long delay in replying.

Could you confirm that you have placed the toc_breaker.dll file in the
Plugins folder inside the fminit folder, rather than the plugins folder
directly under the FrameMaker 10 installation folder.

Thanks,

Help with Framemaker 10

2012-01-06 Thread Rainne Knight
I'm using Framemaker for the first time, and struggling. I'm very familiar
with InDesign, and the differences between ID and FM are counter-intuitive.

I've got FM10, and am struggling to output a PDF that the printer we're
using is happy with. The book is supposed to have only two colors: Black,
and Pantone 186. I've checked the color definitions, and black is defined
as 100% black, with my C, M, or Y in it.

And yet, the printer is insisting that there is CMY all over the document.
I can't figure out how to fix this issue. Any suggestions?

Hi Gay

We've had Frame 10 crashes fairly consistently on a small number of files when
changing conditional text display settings. It's been a major pain!

We seem to have worked round it by doing all of these:
- remove CT from the first page of the doc, esp CT that changes the number of
pages
- remove conditioned rows from tables
- wash through MIF

Other people reported success by separating out the CT pod, but that only
worked for us if we closed all other pods. That made Frame near-unusable.

I'm going to upgrade us to Frame 11 as soon as it's out - and Frame 10's been
so buggy that I'll be asking Adobe for a discount.

Enabling a PDF for comments from FrameMaker Settings

2012-01-06 Thread Fei Min Lorente
FrameMaker 7.2 on Windows XP, Adobe Acrobat 6 Professional, and
TimeSavers 5.0.

We normally password-protect our PDFs produced from FrameMaker to guard
against accidental or deliberate changes, but we had a customer request
the ability to annotate the PDF file. Under Adobe PDF Security, I found
the option for Changes Allowed: Commenting, filling in form fields, and
signing. I thought everything was all right because I could then
comment on the resultant PDFs, but I was using Acrobat.

I then found out that people who are using Reader cannot comment on the
files unless I enable commenting in Acrobat. Is there a way to enable
commenting using any of the above tools that I told you that I have,
before the PDF is generated? We have an automated output system, so I
must be able to configure the settings in one of them without opening
the PDF file after it's been generated.

If the answer is no, then will I have any better luck with FrameMaker 10
and Adobe Acrobat X on Windows 7? We're supposed to upgrade this year.

With the free *Adobe Reader X*, end users can use two commenting tools

created, as long as the PDF does not have security settings that prevent
commenting -- see http://acrobat.solutions.adobe.com/content/areaderx_ipm1_en

Hi Fei Min,

As far as I can tell there is no way to automate this unless you have one of
Adobe's expensive Live Cycle server products.

Subject: Enabling a PDF for comments from FrameMaker Settings

FrameMaker 7.2 on Windows XP, Adobe Acrobat 6 Professional, and TimeSavers
5.0.

We normally password-protect our PDFs produced from FrameMaker to guard
against accidental or deliberate changes, but we had a customer request the
ability to annotate the PDF file. Under Adobe PDF Security, I found the
option for Changes Allowed: "Commenting, filling in form fields, and
signing". I thought everything was all right because I could then comment on
the resultant PDFs, but I was using Acrobat.

I then found out that people who are using Reader cannot comment on the
files unless I enable commenting in Acrobat. Is there a way to enable
commenting using any of the above tools that I told you that I have, before
the PDF is generated? We have an automated output system, so I must be able
to configure the settings in one of them without opening the PDF file after
it's been generated.

If the answer is no, then will I have any better luck with FrameMaker 10 and
Adobe Acrobat X on Windows 7? We're supposed to upgrade this year.

DISCLAIMER: I work for WebWorks.

Any chance you are generating from an unstructured FrameMaker source?

Last I checked, RoboHelp exports the numbered and bulleted paragraphs as
a table (similar to what we do in some cases). However, their markup
may not exactly match the source document layout.

Frame 9 buggy - Frame 10 as bad? Frame 11 on horizon?

2012-01-06 Thread Craig Ede
FM10 came out in very early 2011. I'd be surprised if FM11 was released
before mid-2012 for that reason alone. A year and a half is mighty quick
turnaround for full number revision.

I think those of us who were invited to participate in the FM 11 prerelease
program, but didn't have the bandwidth to do so, can safely confirm
receiving that invitation back in September. So I wouldn't be surprised to
see FM 11 announced around the end of Q1 or in early Q2.
