Re: [Frameworks] flickering

2012-12-12 Thread Scott Dorsey
If you photograph with a strobe, what happens is that not every frame gets
exposed. That is, let's say you're shooting 24 fps and you shoot with a
strobe that is firing right at 12 fps and happens to be timed so the shutter
is fully open at all times. Every other frame is exposed, and when you
project the film you get flashing.

Now, that flashing doesn't look anything like a strobe light, because you
are showing each frame for a full 1/24 sec. It also doesn't look the same
as slowing the frame rate down either.

In real life the camera is usually drifting in speed a bit and the strobe
is drifting in speed a bit and they are never quite synched, so there is
a slow variation going on as well. You might like it, you might not.

I just saw this
here: http://motion.kodak.com/motion/About/The_Storyboard/4294970514/index.htm

I'm not as upset regarding 16mm shooting, since I mostly shoot negative, but
for super 8 I really don't know what to do...I know Fuji is stopping
manufacture as well, so what, if any, other color reversal options are there
without velvia to fill the gap? I suppose one could shoot negative, but then
the options only seem to be video transfer or 16mm blowup, which really sucks.
This also means no color reversal re-perforations for regular 8...

what is the likelihood that kodak (or ANYONE) would make some print stock
available in double super 8? is there anywhere that even still has the
contact printers to run the prints? then maybe all of these color negative
stocks might be more useful to filmmakers who want to finish on film. which
to be honest i prefer to this over-saturated ektachrome anyway.

This is horrible news
But we must Act.
In Japan users of Fujichrome petitioned and managed a two years delay of the
discontinuation of single-8 Fujichrome.

Frameworks can now be put into use. And beyond Frameworks, let's try this one
people. A lot of great films get made on color reversal, we have to at least
try a little.

More soon, I hope...

[Frameworks] CALL FOR ENTRIES Urban Research 2013

2012-12-12 Thread Klaus W. Eisenlohr

Urban Research on Film 2013
Call for Entries
Deadline Dec 20, 2012

Urban Research is a film and video program
curated by Klaus W. Eisenlohr for Directors
Lounge 2013. Urban Research encompasses
explorations of public space, the conditions of
urban life, and interventions in the urban
sphere, by international film and video artists
using experimental, documentary, abstract, or
fictive forms. For The 9th International Berlin
Directors Lounge artists' moving image in any
format except 35mm are welcome.

City life and modernity have been as strongly
connected as film and architecture, two art
practices, which had a strong impact in shaping
the character of the 20th century; playing a
major part in establishing and shaping the myth
of metropolitanism, the myth of modern art, and
of course including the work of
self-mystification. During the twentieth century
both broadcast radio and cinema embraced the
ideological myths of regimes of power. In
post-modern, post-histoire, and post-industrial
art practice, the controversy between l'art pour
l'art and political activism became even more
pronounced, their opposition may have been just
the flip-sides of one coin, while each side
promulgated their part of mythologies, these were
capitalized on more by the art market than they
were appreciated by centers of power or by a
critical public.

However more recently, a different, more critical
practice has developed and a growing number of
artists have become concerned with distinct ideas
about the changing social and spatial frameworks
of the city. Avant-garde film of the 50's and
60's and it's more current reception may or may
not have given new inspirations to these critical
art practices. Those artists intervene in,
irritate, and question the conventionally
received myths. While the digital revolution,
globalization and the spreading financial crises
have had a direct effect on the quality of urban
living space , artists use both analogue and
digital media to question common narratives and
produce new observations.

Urban Research 2013 will be first presented at
Directors Lounge 7--17 February 2013. The program
has also been presented internationally in
screenings in London, Mannheim, Hannover, Poznan,
Freiburg, Essen, Dordrecht, Senigallia, St.
Petersburg and Berlin.

 Hello there.

My name is Paolo Davanzo and I work at the Echo Park Film Center. We are
going to Vietnam to teach a film class and will be doing hand processing of
BW Super 8 film. Normally we use D-19 but they tell us there is none to be
found in Hanoi. But they have D-76.

Does anybody have a good and effective recipe for processing Tri-X (7266) as
reversal not negative using D-76? We are doing some tests tonight but I just
wanted to get a good starting point.

 Thanks,
