[Frameworks] Films made with Canon Scoopic 16mm camera

2014-02-19 Thread adeena . mey

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find examples of important films, or considered seminal
works in the history of experimental cinema, made using a Canon
Scoopic 16mm camera.

Thanks for your help!
Best,

Adeena

[Frameworks] Ooops. Ektachrome. Divorce.

2014-02-19 Thread Mark Street
Hi Brothers and Sisters,
I'm a bit out of the loop on what stocks are discontinued, and just shot my
wife's last roll of 16mm Ektachrome reversal (which was processed
beautifully by Pac Labs here in NYC, incidentally).
Any alternative to this stock so that I can replace this roll? Ebay?
Fuji? Anyone out there holding and willing to sell?
She's not on frameworks so with your help I can pull this off.
Otherwise it's a move to the Super 8 motel for me.

Cool. Composers don't mind commissions though.

To Michael and anyone else seeking music for any kind of film:

I highly recommend Kevin MacLeod's website http://incompetech.com/ on
which Kevin offers a wide variety of his compositions in many genres,
royalty-free. Not only is Kevin gracious enough to make all this stuff
available for nada, he's also been willing to accommodate reasonable
requests if you ask nicely (e.g. deleting a MIDI voice or two from one of
his existing pieces in order to make a more simple background sans
 embellishment).

My experience working with 'composers' to create original scores has not
been at all positive. They tend to do their own thing and I tend to gag
at the result. But then you're stuck with hurt feelings, I did all this
work JUST for you... One of my friends commissioned his brother (an
accomplished professional classical musician) to write a score for a film.
He paid for it, too. The resulting music didn't work with the piece at all,
so my friend had to ditch it (I heard it, he really HAD to...) This called
a major family brouhaha, with angst that trailed on for years.

Far better in most cases to see if Kevin has anything that works for your
piece. YOU get to pick, and he's happy to get a credit no matter which of
his works you might choose. Everybody wins. And did I mention that it's
 free?

Re: [Frameworks] Films made with Canon Scoopic 16mm camera

2014-02-19 Thread Steve Polta
Mark LaPore was a stalwart advocate of the Canon Scoopic and sang its
praises to me one day long ago, describing it as basically a pumped up
Super-8 camera (specifically a pumped up Canon 814-XLS): basically the
thing is--unlike e.g. the Bolex and other 16mm cameras) a portable
self-contained unit--automatic in-the-camera light metering, permanently
attached zoom/macro lens and--best of all for LaPore (and for me) battery
powered and thereby capable of long takes, up to the length of the 16mm
roll (a little over three minutes). It's my understanding that most if not
all of Mark LaPore's 16mm films were shot using this camera including *A
Depression in the Bay of Bengal*, *The Five Bad Elements*, *The Glass
System*, *The Sleepers*, *Kolkata*. Many (well, three) of these are
available from Canyon Cinema:

[Frameworks] Call for Submissions: LIFT International Artist Residencies 2014/2015

2014-02-19 Thread director
Hi all,

We've opened our call for the next artist in residences at LIFT in
Toronto. We just said goodbye to Pablo Marin, our latest resident, who
spent a month making a beautiful 16mm film. We also supported Steve
Cossman and Julie Murray this year and look forward to hosting Juan David
Gonzolez Monroy and Anja Dornieden next month! Richard Tuohy also joined
us last March! So, please apply and join us in Toronto.

More info:

The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) is seeking
applications from international (non-Canadian) artists for 4–6 week
individual production residencies to take place between September 2014 and
August 2015. LIFT is an artist-run production and educational media arts
organization dedicated to celebrating excellence in the moving image. We
support a wide range of production formats including Regular 8mm, Super
8mm, 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm and HD; film and digital editing; optical
printers; contact printers; animation stands; a darkroom and more. Toronto
also offers a range of lab facilities, a large pool of experienced
technicians and talent, a vibrant film community and a dynamic arts
environment.

LIFT's residency program focuses on the production of film-based works
with equipment and facilities to which the artist would not have access in
their local region. Artists are expected to be at an established point in
their practice (although not necessarily working predominantly with film).
Applicants must also consider what they would bring to Toronto in terms of
community collaboration, teaching, artist talks and/or presentation
activities—these engagements are a critical part of each residency offered
by LIFT.

The maximum cash funding for projects is $3,000 (CAD) for travel,
accommodation and per diems. Equipment and facilities will be provided by
LIFT to a maximum of $3,000 (CAD), LIFT equipment rates can be found at
www.lift.ca. The artist is responsible for the costs of all film stock,
chemicals, lab fees and other expendables. The funding for this project
is dependent on grants that LIFT applies for after residents are selected.

Submissions must be received no later than Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

Chris

[Frameworks] Journal suggestions for article on Sally Potter's Thriller?

2014-02-19 Thread Liena
Dear Frameworks list:

Might someone suggest a leading, peer-reviewed journal that would be a good fit
for submitting a short, scholarly (but not a ton of footnotes) article on Sally
Potter's film Thriller (1979)? I come from the world of art history and
contemporary art, and feminist analysis of representation, and welcome your
suggestions. I wrote the piece for a PDF brochure accompanying a screening at
Anthology Film Archives, NY, organized by the Dirty Looks series of queer
experimental film. The screening was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. The
article was never published in print and the brochures not distributed,
although there is a PDF. Thus, I'd like to find a journal for the article and
I'd be open to expanding the piece if the editors are interested.

Thanks very much!

Interesting idea, although there's no reason why it should be limited
to 720p. Except cost, I guess. But yeah, there are a lot of really
good Super-8 cameras out there that would be rejuvenated by such a gadget.
