If the spring is snapped, I see that new springs are available at about $150.
If you can still wind it and release it, then the spring is not snapped. Maybe
it just needs an overhaul. I think it make take special tool to install a new
spring.

Re: [Frameworks] Eyemo camera repair

2015-11-28 Thread Steven
When I was in college, the equipment room manager was a former Bell and
Howell employee who warned of the danger of messing with the spring.
Claiming he had seen someone's arm cut off when a spring escaped. I took
apart a few filmos and one spring escaped and thankfully tangled itself
in my sweater before hitting my face. I developed a technique for
putting the filmo spring back in, but it was only successful twice, and
I was way younger and stronger back then, I wouldn't try it again.

So if you arehinking of DIY'ing it, perhaps think again. Especially with
an Eyemo spring.

Re: [Frameworks] Eyemo camera repair

2015-11-28 Thread todd eacrett

Jon,

Steve's Cine Service in Vancouver if he (Steve Bereczky) is still in
business. He's been repairing and modifying Eyemos for years.

Why do you think it's the spring? Does it keep winding with the
spring never getting tighter? Or does it seem fully wound but won't
release? Former would be the spring, latter might be a spring washer
clutch thingy that's sheared off. (I think it's designed to do that to
protect the mechanism if it jams.)

Disassembling an Eyemo is not that difficult; I've fixed a couple using
an old military repair manual that I found online. If the spring is
not broken there's no need to touch it and it stays securely in the
body when you remove the mechanism.

Parts are pretty hard to find, but if it is the spring washer, Filmos
used the same one.

It's been a couple years since I tore one apart, but I'm happy to help
if I can.

Cheers,

Todd

Great art has always gone to the masses, to their hopes and dreams, for
that spark that kindled their souls. The rest, "the many, all too many" as
Nietzsche called mediocrity, have been mere commodities that can be bought
with money, cheap glory, or social position.

Yes. Do not, absolutely, do not attempt to mess with the spring yourself.
The big warnings in the manual are not joking.

Replacement springs are available and the work is not hard for someone who
has the tooling, but it _is_ hazardous even for people who are well-trained.

I believe Steve passed away early this year. Yes, I wouldn't touch the spring
without the special tooling.
