[Frameworks] Film Festivals

2019-05-18 Thread Dominic Angerame
I am beginning to believe that Film Festivals are no longer viable in this day
and age. They all have become pyramid schemes with very little rewards to us
filmmakers. So few cash prizes, far too many entries. Everyone is now a
filmmaker if you own a cell phone. Every town in the US now has a film
festival.

It is not much fun to have a film shown at a festival where the artist cannot
attend. From the festivalsI I receive a schedule of the films shown and that is
all. Paying approx $50 (the average price of entry) to see my name on a list is
not very rewarding I must say. With so many ways of having my work shown online
and getting direct feedback is much more rewarding and cost effective and
rewarding.

Festivals seldom provide any jury/judge/audience feedback. I receive a thank
you notice from the Festival and more often or not a letter that says. “We
had an enormous amount of entries…..blah blah blah but no thanks no room at the
inn. I have entered at least ten festivals this year with my film being shown
at one, in Albuquerque with Brian Konefsky’s festival. This festival is an
exception to the rule. This festival offers numerous screenings over many days,
not just a weekend.

Some festivals I have entered send no correspondences so I barely know if the
event even occurred.

So after decades of sending my work to festivals, I no longer will participate
and encourage younger filmmakers to create a more viable method of having their
work screened.

Thanks

Dominic

Re: [Frameworks] experimental essay films and one other question

2019-05-18 Thread Beebe, Roger W.
Peter,

I agree with Albert’s response that you probably don’t need the qualifier
“experimental” in front of “essay film,” since the essay film as a form is
already experimental (to greater or lesser degrees, and depending on what one
means by experimental).

For a reading and list of makers, I’d take a look at the recent collection of
essays by Nora Alter and Tim Corrigan, Essays on the Essay Film. I just
finished teaching a class on the essay film and this book was an invaluable
resource for us:

Best,
Roger

Subject: [Frameworks] experimental essay films and one other question

Dear All,

We have 2 quick questions for a longer essay on experimental cinema:

1. Bori's question: Can you recommend films or artists in the field of
experimental essay film, after 2000 until today?

2. Péter's question: can you recommend books or articles on the institutional
system of the contemporary experimental cinema? I know the books of Scott
Macdonald and Malte Hagener on the institutions of classical/post-war
avant-garde film, but I do not know anything about the contemporary situation.

Thanks!
Bori and Péter

Re: [Frameworks] experimental essay films and one other question

2019-05-18 Thread Albert Alcoz
Dear Péter,

We could say "experimental essay film" is a controversial label. It looks
like you want to avoid the documentary side of the film construction.
I'm not exposing it in the proper manner but maybe "essay film" could be
read from different points of views: orthodox and heterodox or conventional
and unusual.
The question would be: what differentiates an "experimental essay film" and
a "non experimental film essay"?
Interviews with talking heads, voice over, archive footage, chronological
segmentation, modes of production or distribution, budget?

Anyway, here are some names that could be related to that concept after
2000 until today:

Gustav Deutsch: *Film Ist 7-12 *(2002), *Film Ist a Girl & a Gun* (2009)
Thom Andersen: *Los Angeles Plays Itself* (2003), *The Thoughts That Once
We Had* (2015)
Jean-Luc Godard: *The Image Book* (2016)
Chris Marker: *Chats Perchés* (2004)
Harun Farocki: dozens of works.
Hito Steyerl: *How Not to Be Seen: A Fucking Didactic Educational .MOV File*
(2013)
Pip Chodorov: *Free Radicals* (2011)
(...)
