[Frameworks] Submit Your Work: BRING YOUR OWN TONY

2018-01-31 Thread Ekrem (Squeaky Wheel)
Hi Framers,

Wanted to pass this open call for a special screening honoring Tony
Conrad. Do pass it on to anyone who might be interested!

--

Calling all friends, students and collaborators of Tony Conrad to…BRING
YOUR OWN TONY! Submit your work to be considered for a special screening of
films and videos on May 11th in which the late artist appeared or
participated. One of Squeaky Wheel’s founders, Conrad was a prolific
collaborator, and never shied away from being part of the works of his
community. In association with the exhibition, Introducing Tony Conrad: A
Retrospective, BRING YOUR OWN TONY honors the artist’s collaborative spirit
by highlighting a few of the many art projects, both known and unknown,
that he enthusiastically participated in. Did Tony star in your zombie
flick? Did he play the accordion in the corner of your performance-art
video? Do you have a cellphone clip of him goofing around at the Lennox?
Send us your work!

Submission deadline: March 1, 2018, 11:59pm
Notification date: April 1, 2018
Screening date: May 11, 2018

More info and application at squeaky.org/bringyourowntony

Artists included in BRING YOUR OWN TONY will receive a $50 screening fee
per work. All works will be screened in digital formats; if selected works
have not been digitized, Squeaky Wheel will contact you to discuss
non-archival digital transfer options.

Introducing Tony Conrad: A Retrospective is organized by the Albright-Knox
Art Gallery with the support of the University at Buffalo Art Galleries.
The exhibition’s community partners include Burchfield Penney Art Center,
Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, and Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art
Center.

Re: [Frameworks] Eulogy Films

2017-04-20 Thread Ekrem (Squeaky Wheel)
Hi Margaret,

Not sure which of these may or may not have been mentioned - just fetched
this thread from my spam where it landed - however, and I'm sure you've
seen most if not all:

*The Dragon is the Flame, *Mary Helena Clark
*November*, Hito Steyerl
*A Knowledge We Cannot Lose*, Nina Fonoroff
*Tziporah*, Abraham Ravett

there are also three wonderful films (that I know of) made in honor of /
dedicated to Marion McMahon (whose *Nursing History* I also highly
recommend)

*What These Ashes Wanted*, Phil Hoffman
*Behind this Soft Eclipse*, Eve Heller
*Froglight*, Sarah Abbott

[Frameworks] Call for Submissions for WNY: Shape of a Pocket

2017-03-03 Thread Ekrem (Squeaky Wheel)
Framers residing in the 17 counties of Western New York, note the following
call for submissions. Application form / hard link here
.

--
Call for Submissions: Shape of a Pocket

*Deadline: April 1, 2017, 11:59pm*

*The pocket in question is a small pocket of resistance. A pocket is formed
when two or more people come together in agreement. The resistance is
against the inhumanity of the new world economic order.* – John Berger, The
Shape of a Pocket

Squeaky Wheel is now accepting submissions to a juried, thematic group
exhibition inspired by the idea of “pockets of resistance.” Titled after
John Berger’s book, *The Shape of a Pocket*, we invite artists in Western
New York, working in all forms of media arts (from video, film, sound,
emergent technologies, performance, poetry and cross disciplinary
platforms) to submit proposals engaging with the theme. How can the form of
a work be a site of resistance? How can collaborative practices inform our
ideas of activism in art? What does it mean for resistance to happen in an
exhibition context? Work can address specific topics, or embody these ideas
in broader ways; artists are invited to interpret this theme according
their specific concerns and practices. Shape of a Pocket will open in July
2017 and will be comprised of a gallery exhibition, and a screening /
performance section.

*Eligibility:*
Submissions are open to artists and collectives residing in the 17 counties
of Western New York that comprise: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua,
Chemung, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans,
Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates. We encourage artists
at any stage of their career to apply.

*Selected artists will receive:*
Artist fees according to W.A.G.E. baselines
.
A complimentary Squeaky Wheel membership (one year).
Proposed technical and installation support for the display of the work.
See available presentation/installation equipment here

(based
on availability.)
A community feedback forum for their work.

*Submission Process:*
Include links to support material, as instructed in the form.
Artists may submit up to three works for consideration. Each submission
requires a separate application.
Notifications about your submission will be sent out by April 30, 2017.
Incomplete applications will be disqualified; please check all links before
submitting.
Contact ek...@squeaky.org with any questions.
Submit by deadline: April 1, 2017, 11:59pm.

[Frameworks] Werner Nekes Travels

2017-01-24 Thread Ekrem (Squeaky Wheel)
His website seems to be locked right now, and not sure how much info there
is on there about it, but I've been curious about those who attended Nekes'
workshops in other countries (besides those in Western Europe and the US.)

I know he's been to Argentina and Turkey, but would love to hear more if
any of you have attended or know of his travels.

Haven't been keeping up with Frameworks, so apologies if this has been

an ambitious Kickstarter to help start the nation's first non-profit film
lab.

They have 3 days left, and they're 15k short.
