[Frameworks] NYC: spare film

2019-08-15 Thread Re X
Hey everyone,

I am doing a 16mm found footage project and looking for curbed, soon to be
curbed, soon to be trashed or donated film. Please keep me in mind and
email me off list, if you spot some in the New York City area or have any
extra film/discards that need a new owner.

Thanks!

Re: [Frameworks] Jonas Mekas

2019-01-24 Thread Re X
In honor of Mekas, keep cinema alive by going to the cinema. Shoot film,
shoot video, shoot with your heart and your kino-eye.
Jonas loved cinema, and he also loved music. Support your local musicians.
Go see musicians perform and put dollars in the hat. Laugh and dance with
them. Keep the avant-garde sounds snd sights alive, wherever you may be.
Think the world through poetics, like Mekas tried so hard to keep alive.
And if you imbibe, have a fernet and toast to his spiritus.

Re: [Frameworks] 'screenwriting' of experimental film

2018-05-22 Thread Re X
Hey Billy,

Here's a tip about something I've always relished. When Anthology Film
Archives screens its Essential Cinema programs, they often give out a
program that has translations of the intertitles, dialogue, plus little
commentaries on the action. That's because traditionally Essential Cinema
was to be shown without subtitles, as the subtitles interfered with the
aesthetic representation of the mise... I always found these programs to be
more like experimental film scripts/treatments. I would recommend these as
a practical example, if you are trying to write experimental scripts
yourself. If you are able to swing by Anthology, check them out.

Otherwise, from a research perspective, there is also a great compendium to
Maya Deren that Anthology sells. It's a hefty two volume set and has
thoughts, notes and treatments for her films, I think along the lines of
what you are describing.

[Frameworks] Service repair manual for Nizo 4056

2017-08-12 Thread Re X
Hello everyone,

Could anyone do me the favor of shooting me a service repair manual for the
nizo 4056? I think the issue I am having has to do with something on the
circuit board. I want to go in and test some points, but it would help to
have an idea of what I am looking at.

Thanks!

I saw *Film Before Film* twice at Anthology, and once Nekes was there. He
was very kind. I love that film. It always serves to fill the medium with
subtly and wonderment once again, when I am feeling more jaded about
'cinema'. Very glad for the work that Nekes did. May he conduct strange
experiments and illusions from the other side~

Subject: [Frameworks] Howard Guttenplan (April 6th, 1934 - February 23rd,
 2015)

Just this afternoon, I received the shocking and sad news that Howard
Guttenplan, the long term director of the Millennium Film Workshop
passed away February 23, 2015. He was laid to rest at Calverton
 National Cemetery in Long Island.

Howard was a complicated person. Keeping an organization like
Millennium going for so long was a solitary and difficult task. The
funeral home director told me that he felt that Howard wanted to go
out alone, only accompanied by a close childhood friend. That is so
much the way that Howard was.

When I was running the Millennium and working on the gargantuan task
of sorting old materials, the complete history of Howard's tenure came
before my eyes. Virtually every experimental filmmaker of note came
through the doors. It is no accident that Stan Brakhage's New York
premieres were at Millennium, or that Jack Smith spent countless hours
watching film and editing with scotch tape. Countless filmmakers were
 loyal to Howard.

Despite the struggles that I had with him reforming the Millennium, he
gave me a full set of the Journal as a token of appreciation. He gave
me my first solo show. Even when he at his most pissed off at me, he
 always complimented my work.

There was something very unique and special because of what Howard did
and who he was. Millennium is still thriving. And from me
personally, Howard's New York Diary changed me as a filmmaker. I hope
that his film and photographic work will be preserved and archived.

 Requiescat in pace.
