experimental and independent film. Besides the excellent "Exhibition" issue
of INCITE magazine, here are two historical articles that come to mind:

I heartily second Alain’s recommendation of INCITE #4.

And (apologies up front) my forthcoming book on expanded cinema spends a chunk 
of time talking about how recent/contemporary expanded cinema and the 
microcinema are formally parallel and sprung from similar historical sources - 
pressures might be the better word. It comes out this summer, so you’ll have to 
be in suspense for awhile, but it is on the topic you raise. [Cinema Expanded:

Anna Schober has written really interesting stuff on this - 2007 -
City-Squats The cinema-space as a cave for politics, and her full length
book The Cinema Makers

There is Jack Stevenson's Land of 1000 Balconies for a more pulp style
Also for a UK perspective, Duncan Reekie's 'Subversion: The definitive
history of Underground Cinema'
I am currently writing a PhD on DIY Cinema in the UK too, if you want to pm
