2019-12-16 Thread Kornelia Boczkowska

Hi Chris,

There are a number of academic publications/papers, which discuss
microcinemas and alternative exhibition spaces in the context of
independent, avant-garde and experimental filmmaking - both general and
site specific. Here’s a selection that I’ve come across (perhaps some
have been already mentioned):

Scott Berry, Size matters: Microcinemas and alternative exhibition
spaces (Millennium Film Journal 41, 2003)

Santiago Vernetti, Locating the microcinema: Echo Park Film Center,
Light Industry, and Other Cinema (MA thesis, University of Southern
California, 2013)

Ben Davis, Repertory Movie Theaters of New York City: Havens for
Revivals, Indies and the Avant-Garde, 1960-1994 (McFarland, 2017)

Julia Bryan-Wilson, “Out to See Video”: EZTV's Queer Microcinema in West
Hollywood (Grey Room 56, 2014)

Kyle Conway, Small Media, Global Media: Kino and the Microcinema
Movement (Journal of Film and Video 60: 3/4, 2008)

Donna de Ville, The Microcinema Movement and Montreal (PhD dissertation,
Concordia University, 2014)

Donna de Ville, The Persistent Transience of Microcinema (in the United
States and Canada) (Film History 27: 3, 2015)

Jennifer Ann Rosales, Participatory Culture at the Echo Park Film Center
(Journal of Media Literacy Education 5: 1, 2013)

Marc Moscato, Persevering despite the impossible: a brief history of
media activism in Buffalo, NY (Jump Cut 52, 2010)

Best regards,

Kornelia

Re: [Frameworks] Readings on alternative spaces for cinema?

2019-12-16 Thread Ben Ogrodnik
Hi Chris,

There is a lot of good writing on the subject of alternative venues for
experimental and independent film. Besides the excellent "Exhibition" issue
of INCITE magazine, here are two historical articles that come to mind:

“The Persistent Transience of Microcinema (in the United States and Canada)”
Donna de Ville in *Film History* Vol 27, No 3 2015: 104-136.

“Experimental Screens in the 1960s and 1970s: The Site of Community,” Tess
Takahashi, *Cinema Journal* Vol 51 Issue 2 (Winter 2012): 162-167, 172.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: [Frameworks] Readings on alternative spaces for cinema?

2019-12-16 Thread Jonathan Walley
I highly recommend Brian Frye’s account of the Robert Beck (free download):
https://uknowledge.uky.edu/law_facpub/322/

And I find this utterly engrossing. Get ready to go down the rabbit hole:
https://archive.org/details/TheRobertBeckMemorialCinemaVolumeIMay1998-october1999/page/n3

Kathryn Ramey’s very cool book addresses microcinemas indirectly, but deals
quite a lot with DIY practices:
https://routledgetextbooks.com/textbooks/9780240823966/
.

Ramey has also done some fascinating scholarship on experimental film from an
anthropological perspective, which extends to the spaces in which experimental
films are shown and the communities that develop in and around these spaces.
See:http://rameyfilms.com/writings.html .
In particular:
https://www.ejumpcut.org/archive/jc52.2010/rameyExperimentalFilm/index.html
.

I heartily second Alain’s recommendation of INCITE #4.

And (apologies up front) my forthcoming book on expanded cinema spends a chunk
of time talking about how recent/contemporary expanded cinema and the
microcinema are formally parallel and sprung from similar historical sources -
pressures might be the better word. It comes out this summer, so you’ll have to
be in suspense for awhile, but it is on the topic you raise. [Cinema Expanded:
Avant-Garde Film in the Age of Intermedia, Oxford U. Press. At no bookstores
near anyone, summer 2020.]

Hi,

Anna Schober has written really interesting stuff on this - 2007 -
City-Squats The cinema-space as a cave for politics, and her full length
book The Cinema Makers

There is Jack Stevenson's Land of 1000 Balconies for a more pulp style
Also for a UK perspective, Duncan Reekie's 'Subversion: The definitive
history of Underground Cinema'
I am currently writing a PhD on DIY Cinema in the UK too, if you want to pm

Hi Chris,

Some time ago Benjamin Taylor added three references tagged "microcinema"
to the Zotero library on experimental cinema.

https://www.zotero.org/groups/122679/experimental_cinema/items/q/microcinema

Weirdly there's one newer title tagged "microcinema" that shows up when
searching my personal copy of the library but not via the website and that
is

I'd encourage you (and others) to contribute additional readings you find
to that library.

Eric

[Frameworks] Readings on alternative spaces for cinema?

2019-12-15 Thread Chris Freeman
Hello Frameworkers, I am looking for some help finding readings about
alternative spaces for cinema, microcinemas, artist-run spaces, warehouse
spaces, explorations of small DIY art communities, or maybe something about
how experimental art forms coexist with experimental spaces.

This would be for an undergraduate class to provide context for guest
speakers who run alternative spaces.

Hope that's not too vague, any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
