No offense, but as bsdstats is not installed by default, it means that
Australia has the highest number of _bsdstat_ installations.

The PC-BSD folks have it installed by default, which is why they hold the
higest spot for the US, and are fast approaching FreeBSD overall ...

Someone was looking at adding install/activate bsdstats to sysinstall for new
installations, but don't think it went anywhere past the talking stage ...

Highest number of *reported* installations ... god, if there are only 10k BSD
installations out there, we are doing something seriously wrong ...

Number of reporting systems for the past 6 months, though:

 Chad,

Check out http://www.bsdstats.org/ also in ports/sysutils/bsdstats.

Are there any projects out there collecting data on numbers of FreeBSD

If not . . . is there any sense that such a project would be useful to
the community? I might consider getting at least a web-based
self-reporting thing like the Linux Counter project set up, if that seems
like something the community would want/need and doesn't already exist.

What I'm really looking for, though, is any existing efforts to count
FreeBSD users, even if such efforts are prone to error.
