The firmware on the controller crashed. The best I can suggest is to look for
newer firmware (mfiutil can flash firmware) and to call LSI or Dell
tech-support and report the problem. In the past, there have been bugs with
patrol reads causing crashes under heavy load, so you might also look at
disabling that option.

mfi and Dell PERC 6/i

2010-08-24 Thread Danilo Baio
Hi guys,

I have a DELL PERC 6/i controller and I can't find the problem.
The system was running and lost disk access with this messages on console:
"mfi0: COMMAND 0xff80005d1770 TIMEOUT AFTER 6178 SECONDS"
...
http://img806.imageshack.us/img806/2300/errorr6102.png

I can't log in, after a reboot, nothing on the logs.

only shows this on boot:

Aug 24 23:04:58 bazinga kernel: mfi0: 2806 (335999491s/0x0020/DEAD) - Fatal
firmware error: Line 156 in ../../raid/1078int.c

What can I do to find the problem ?
This controller is really supported by mfi ?

Thanks for the help.

This sounds wrong. C3 should only be entered when a CPU is halted for an
extended time. When I am plying a movie, I never see C3, but I am using
an old uniprocessor on my T43.

I would believe that dropping to C3 could be detrimental to playing
video as it takes quite a few clock cycles for the system to climb out
of C3 and start doing real work again.

Things that come to mind...does the player move between CPUs while this
is going on? Does ULE take processor ACPI state into account when
scheduling? Can you try locking the player to a single CPU with
cpuset(1) so it does not move around? Try different CPUs. Some are
more equal than others, at least in my network performance testing using
FreeBSD and I have been unable to figure out, other than empirically,
which ons(s) work best.

just some random thoughts from an un-air conditioned office on a very
hot afternoon in Berzerkley. I may simply be delirious. :-)

It's a bit of an edge case I agree. A working cross installation is desirable
if for example you want to upgrade a machine in place, but have a fallback
mechanism by installing everyting on a separate root filesystem first.

As I'm not cross compiling, I simply used the tzetup it built to complete the
install. I temporarily replaced the 8-STABLE version with the 9-CURRENT
version on the build box.

I wonder if tzsetup should be a bootstrap tool...

You're trying to install 9-CURRENT using 8.1-STABLE binaries, which just
won't work in this (tzsetup) case.

The -C flag is only set when DESTDIR is set, which might be considered
a bug since it prevents cross-compiling and cross-installation using
different versions of FreeBSD, like in your case.

But I'm not so sure that support for this is guaranteed when going from
an older version to a newer version.

I suppose you could try a) editing share/zoneinfo/Makefile and deleting
the optC code or b) pointing PATH at DESTDIR, if it's already populated.

make installworld fails; tzsetup missing -C option

2010-08-24 Thread Pieter de Goeje
I'm trying to do a remote upgrade of a machine by mounting
it's root filesystem on /mnt using nfs. The build machine
runs a recent 8-STABLE. The target runs 9-CURRENT.

make installworld fails with:

install -o root -g wheel -m 444
/data/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/share/zoneinfo/../../contrib/tzdata//zone.tab
/mnt/usr/share/zoneinfo/
Updating /etc/localtime
tzsetup: illegal option -- C
usage: tzsetup [-ns]
*** Error code 1

Build script does the equivalent of this:
$ mount target:/ /mnt
$ cd /FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src
$ make -j4 buildworld && make -j4 buildkernel
$ setenv DESTDIR /mnt
$ make installkernel
$ setenv NO_FSCHG 1
$ make installworld

uname on the build machine:
FreeBSD 8.1-STABLE #1: Tue Aug 10 13:09:59 CEST 2010

[CFT] ZFS ACL and rrwlock speedup

2010-08-24 Thread Martin Matuska
Dear FreeBSD community,

in my last CFT I presented a patch that improves ZFS write speed. There
have been easily portable improvements on the read side in OpenSolaris,
too. Of course, the improvement here is by far not that dramatic as in
the zfs_metaslab.patch, but OpenSolaris developers claim this also
improves the speed of stat() calls.

I would like to Call For Testing for the following patch (9-CURRENT):
http://people.freebsd.org/~mm/patches/zfs/zfs_abe_stat_rrwlock.patch

This patch adds the following:
- better ACL caching and speedup of the ACL permission checks
- lowered mutex contention in the read/writer lock (rrwlock)
- several bugfixes

This patch does not interfere with the zfs_metaslab.patch

To apply the patch against 8-STABLE, you need to apply the v15 update first:
http://people.freebsd.org/~mm/patches/zfs/v15/stable-8-v15.patch

The patch imports the following OpenSolaris onnv revisions:
9749 (without zlook), 9866, 9981, 10143, 10232, 10295, 10250, 10269

And covers the following OpenSolaris Bug IDs:
6802734 Support for Access Based Enumeration (not used on FreeBSD)
6844861 inconsistent xattr readdir behavior with too-small buffer
6848431 zfs with rstchown=0 or file_chown_self privilege allows user to
"take" ownership
6775100 stat() performance on files on zfs should be improved
6827779 rrwlock is overly protective of its counters
6857433 memory leaks found at: zfs_acl_alloc/zfs_acl_node_alloc
6860318 truncate() on zfsroot succeeds when file has a component of its
path set without access permission
6865875 zfs sometimes incorrectly giving search access to a dir
6870564 panic in zfs_getsecattr
6867395 zpool_upgrade_007_pos testcase panic'd with BAD TRAP: type=e
(#pf Page fault)
6868276 zfs_rezget() can be hazardous when znode has a cached ACL

Cheers,
mm
