CURRENT: Changes in lib/msun/math.h make ports to fail

2013-07-12 Thread O. Hartmann

Updating CURRENT from r253216 to r253252 triggers an updating of
several ports to fail, namely, for instance,

www/firefox
graphiks/webkit-gtk2
deskuitls/fbreader
graphics/gdal

The error is in all ports when compiled with CLANG 3.3 -std=c++11
-stdlib=libc++ similar, routing to math.h. I will show the error for
www/firefox:

[...]
In file included from ./../../dist/include/mozilla/MathAlgorithms.h:15:
/usr/include/c++/4.2/cmath:468:44: error: __builtin_types_compatible_p
is not valid in C++ __capture_fpclassify(_Tp __f) { return
fpclassify(__f); } ^~~
/usr/include/math.h:104:2: note: expanded from macro 'fpclassify'
__fp_type_select(x, __fpclassifyf, __fpclassifyd, __fpclassifyl)
^~~~
/usr/include/math.h:91:2: note: expanded from macro '__fp_type_select'
__builtin_types_compatible_p(__typeof(x), long double),
ld(x),

[...]

I was wondering why /usr/include/c++/4.2/cmath gets included and not
the header provided for CLANG. I guess this is a typo/bug. I did do dig
deeper into it.

Hope someone can fix this.

Regards,
Oliver

Re: FreeBSD-head hang when shutdown by ACPI with Intel GPU and new Xorg and SandyBridge

2013-07-12 Thread Lundberg, Johannes
As the KMS code does not switch the display mode back, once X with KMS
starts, you can't get a console back.

Is there any solution for this in the works?

  Hi
More than a month I can not shutdown FreeBSD on my laptop correctly when
running Xorg with Intel GPU. However reboot work correctly. Shutdown work
fine if I choose Vesa driver in xorg.conf. So I can run with intel, then
edit xorg.conf, kill Xorg server and shutdown correctly. If I shut down
immediately after loading Xorg - everything is fine too.
Without the text console is difficult to provide any information :( Why
would still not recover mode when kill Xorg?

  PS
I try to disable RC6 states -without any changes.
  FreeBSD shutdown correctly before January.

I am seeing similar issues on my Sandybridge running Xorg with KMS, but I
 see it on 9-Stable.

The main difference between shutdown and reboot is that shutdown goes
through the rc.d files and issues a 'stop' for each. reboot simply kills
running processes, first by sending SIGTERM and then sending SIGKILL to
those that still live. So something is failing to die and that something
is probably X. The system still responds to ICMP ECHOREQUEST (i.e. ping),
but I can't fire up an ssh session.

As the KMS code does not switch the display mode back, once X with KMS
starts, you can't get a console back.

Since the system is deadlocked in this state, I suspect something bad is
happening in the KMS code that leaves the system hung.

I may try to run a firewire console. Never tried it, but it should work.

Re: FreeBSD-head hang when shutdown by ACPI with Intel GPU and new Xorg and SandyBridge

2013-07-12 Thread David Chisnall
On 12 Jul 2013, at 10:01, Lundberg, Johannes
johan...@brilliantservice.co.jp wrote:

As the KMS code does not switch the display mode back, once X with KMS
starts, you can't get a console back.

Is there any solution for this in the works?

Yes. ray@ is currently being funded by the FreeBSD Foundation to improve
Newcons compatibility with KMS. The Newcons framework is designed to improve
layering in the console. The machine-dependent part simply provides a
framebuffer interface, the machine-independent part provides the terminal
emulator (this also means things like unicode in the console will work, as will
higher-resolution consoles). It's currently used on a few non-x86 platforms,
but it wasn't a priority for x86 because the PC BIOS text console mostly works
and people who want a better terminal can just run X. It's now become a
priority because of the KMS integration with X.org. Once this work is
completed, we will switch to a new X.org by default and will use the KMS
interface within the kernel for selecting the video mode.

I've been using the patch for a couple of days and didn't notice any
issues so far. Privoxy's regression tests continue to work as expected
  as well.

Thanks for testing and reporting back.

Could you test with net.inet.tcp.log_debug and net.inet.tcp.syncookies_only=1
as well to bypass the syn cache entirely?

I haven't noticed any issues with net.inet.tcp.syncookies_only=1.

It will give a bit of debug log output which is it telling you mostly about
rounding to the next nearest index value. You can send the output privately
to me to spot unexpected outliers, if any.

One unexpected outlier seems to be:

Jul 11 12:42:51 r500 kernel: [10947] TCP: [10.0.0.1]:62972 to [10.0.0.1]:8118
tcpflags 0x18PUSH,ACK; tcp_do_segment: FIN_WAIT_2: Received 27 bytes of data
after socket was closed, sending RST and removing tcpcb
Jul 11 12:42:51 r500 kernel: [10947] TCP: [10.0.0.1]:62972 to [10.0.0.1]:8118
tcpflags 0x11FIN,ACK; syncache_expand: Segment failed SYNCOOKIE
authentication, segment rejected (probably spoofed)

This also seems to have resulted in two reset packets:

fk@r500 ~/test/wireshark $tcpdump -vv -n -r syncookie-test.pcap dst port 62972
reading from file syncookie-test.pcap, link-type NULL (BSD loopback)

I've been using the patch for a couple of days and didn't notice any
issues so far. Privoxy's regression tests continue to work as expected
as well.

Thanks for testing and reporting back.

Could you test with net.inet.tcp.log_debug and net.inet.tcp.syncookies_only=1
as well to bypass the syn cache entirely?

I haven't noticed any issues with net.inet.tcp.syncookies_only=1.

Excellent.

It will give a bit of debug log output which is it telling you mostly about
rounding to the next nearest index value. You can send the output privately
to me to spot unexpected outliers, if any.

One unexpected outlier seems to be:

Both errors are normal and a sign of lazy application behavior, not a TCP
error.

This error is not uncommon and happens when the server side has closed the
socket (and sent FIN) while the client side is still trying to send data.
As the server has closed the socket we can't the deliver the data anymore
and respond with a reset to let the client know. It typically happens with
web servers and short keep-alive timeouts.

Jul 11 12:42:51 r500 kernel: [10947] TCP: [10.0.0.1]:62972 to [10.0.0.1]:8118
tcpflags 0x11FIN,ACK; syncache_expand: Segment failed SYNCOOKIE
authentication, segment rejected (probably spoofed)

This is the same situation after the previous line but after the inpcb was
cleared. Now a second, final (because of the FIN), in-flight packet from
the client arrives at the listen socket because the original inpcb is gone
now. Since there isn't a matching SYN cache entry it falls back to check
for a syn cookie which obviously fails. Having a FIN segment reach syncache
is unusual but not wrong. In theory one could send a SYN, receive the SYN-ACK
and respond with ACK-FIN in one packet if it carried all data to be sent and
the application did a socket write shutdown already.

Client and server are running on the same system.

As I don't usually use net.inet.tcp.log_debug and haven't been able to
intentionally
reproduce the issue (but have seen it a few times), I'm not sure yet if the
behaviour
is actually related to the SYN cookie changes at all.

It's normal behavior and not related to the SYN cookie changes.

Yes. ray@ is currently being funded by the FreeBSD Foundation to
improve Newcons compatibility with KMS. The Newcons framework is
designed to improve layering in the console. The machine-dependent
part simply provides a framebuffer interface, the machine-independent
part provides the terminal emulator (this also means things like
unicode in the console will work, as will higher-resolution consoles).
 It's currently used on a few non-x86 platforms, but it wasn't a
priority for x86 because the PC BIOS text console mostly works and
people who want a better terminal can just run X. It's now become a
priority because of the KMS integration with X.org. Once this work is
completed, we will switch to a new X.org by default and will use the
KMS interface within the kernel for selecting the video mode.

Is there a rough ETA for this great improvement?

Well, the system doesn't deadlock it's perfectly useable so long
as you don't touch the file that's wedged. A lot of the time the
userland process is unkillable, but often it is killable. How do
I get from from the PID to where the FS is stuck in the kernel?

Use kgdb. 'proc pid', then 'bt'.

So, I setup a remote kbgd session, but I still can't figure out how
to get at the information we need.

In the mean time, I'll just force it to make a core dump from ddb.
However, I can't reacreate the issue while the mirror (gmirror) is
rebuilding, so we'll have to wait for that to finish.

Sorrry, just run 'sudo kgdb' on the box itself. You can inspect the running
kernel without having to stop it.

So, this machine's installworld *always* stalls installing clang.
The install can be stopped (ctrl-c) leaving behind this process:

root23147 0.0 0.0 9268 1512 1 D 7:51PM 0:00.01 install -s -o
root -g wheel -m 555 clang /usr/bin/clang

This is the backtrace from gdb. I suspect frame 4.

Sound lag over HDMI

2013-07-12 Thread Ulrich Spörlein
Hey,

I'm trying to setup XBMC on a -CURRENT box with an IvyBridge CPU and
GPU. While testing playback via mplayer on a LG TV over HDMI, I noticed
that sound is lagging video by about 100-200ms or so. When I switch to
using the jack outputs powered by some Realtek chip, audio is perfectly
fine.

Is HDMI lag a known problem? Can this be fixed?

Well, the system doesn't deadlock it's perfectly useable so long
as you don't touch the file that's wedged. A lot of the time the
userland process is unkillable, but often it is killable. How do
I get from from the PID to where the FS is stuck in the kernel?
=20
Use kgdb. 'proc pid', then 'bt'.
   =20
So, I setup a remote kbgd session, but I still can't figure out how
to get at the information we need.
   =20
(kgdb) proc 5176

   =20
In the mean time, I'll just force it to make a core dump from ddb.
However, I can't reacreate the issue while the mirror (gmirror) is
rebuilding, so we'll have to wait for that to finish.
  =20
Sorrry, just run 'sudo kgdb' on the box itself. You can inspect the ru=
 nning
kernel without having to stop it.
 =20
So, this machine's installworld *always* stalls installing clang.
The install can be stopped (ctrl-c) leaving behind this process:

I don't know what to say. I am now using HDMI audio from NVIDIA card to
quite old external 5.1 receiver with XBMC every day, and I haven't
noticed lags. Before that I've also successfully used SPDIF connection
for the long time. Though I've never specially tested it somehow other
then watching movies. :) If you have some good testing methodology --
please, welcome to share. By the HDA driver HDMI is handled exactly the
same way as analog output from the point of data buffering, so I would
not expect there major differences.

You may try to experiment with hw.snd.latency sysctl to tune buffering
in kernel to see whether it affect the result.

Also you may compare delays when doing AC3/DTS pass-through with case of
software decoding and discrete (multichannel) PCM playback.

The only potentially related effect I have noticed is that my receiver
eats first second or about that of playback stream. It makes short
sounds like GUI event notifications inaudible sometimes. I guess that
could be made to restore audio sync after some unavoidable startup
delay, but that is only my guess.

I think while a good move, we need to allow a window of development to re-work
other HEAD components.

It might also be worth developing a lint-tool to make sure we get every last
instance (both from C code and sh code) within our base before we motion to cut
a release with this change.

I for one am effected and will have to change things.

Can you point us at a guide (or even better, a Wiki) that can smooth the
process?

lost my r2xxxxx subversion id in uname kern.version

2013-07-12 Thread Dan Mack
I'm not sure exactly when but recently I've lost the subversion id from
kern.version and hence uname and motd.

Subsequent fresh rebuilds from source don't bring it back even after
wiping out the tree.

Today it looks like this:

root@olive:~ # uname -a
FreeBSD olive.example.com 10.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT #0: Fri
Jul 12 19:38:24 CDT 2013
r...@olive.example.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/MACKGEN amd64

root@olive:~ # sysctl kern.version
kern.version: FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT #0: Fri Jul 12 19:38:24 CDT 2013
r...@olive.example.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/MACKGEN

Previously it would have '#0 r253307' in it's place.

This only happened on 1 of 3 build machines.

Did you upgrade subversion but not the src tree?

This is extremely weird. The hirunningspace is less then lorunningspace,
am I right ? This causes the runningbufspace machinery to never wake up
waiters, I believe. The process is put on sleep when hirunningspace is
reached, but would be woken up after we cross lorunningspace. If the
space never goes up to your bigger lorunningspace, you get the process
stuck forever, owning vnode lock and making machine inoperable.

I just verified on the 4G VM on amd64, my numbers for lo is 4587520,
for high 6881280. Verify your tuning and kernel options, which you should
have provided with the original report, I think.
