Try 'cvs update -PdA'

Make sure that your cvs supfile has the line "tag=." A week ago I used the cvs-supfile from the /usr/share/examples/cvsup folder and had the same error. When I used the standard-supfile from the same file, which had the tag=. line, it worked fine.
