backing off to ata-lowlevel.c 1.10 allows me to boot again.

For the record, I also pulled atapicam out of the kernel, and the same
thing happens.

I have a ICH3 controller, and a 9/9 kernel works just fine, but a today 
kernel
hangs(!) after printing
ata0: [MPSAFE]

Here is the GOOD dmesg:
