[Bug 209157] Section 14.5.1 Updating Multiple Jails has several errors/ommissions

2016-04-29 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=209157

Bug ID: 209157
Summary: Section 14.5.1 Updating Multiple Jails has several
errors/ommissions
   Product: Documentation
   Version: Latest
  Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
  Severity: Affects Some People
  Priority: ---
 Component: Documentation
  Assignee: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org
  Reporter: baho-u...@columbus.rr.com

In the handbook Section14.5 Updating Multiple Jails has the following
error/ommissions:

Section 14.5.1 under 3. Create a skeleton for the read-write portion of the
system:

need to add the following: mv dev /home/j/skel

Section 14.5.1 under 4. Use mergemaster to install missing configuration
files

this: rm -R bin boot lib libexec mnt proc rescue sbin sys usr dev
should be: rm -R bin boot lib libexec mnt proc rescue sbin sys usr

Section 14.5.1 under 5. Now, symlink the read-write file system to the
read-only file system

# mkdir s should be # mkdir s s/portbuild
ln -s s/usr-local usr/local should be # ln -s ../s/usr-local usr/local
ln -s s/usr-X11R6 usr/X11R6 should be # ln -s ../s/usr-X11R6 usr/X11R6
ln -s s/distfiles usr/ports/distfiles should be
ln -s ../../s/distfiles usr/ports/distfiles
and add ln -s s/dev/dev

Instead of animated logos, we could do what most modern websites are now doing:
bootstrap based carousel. And v4 (in alpha) will have it built in, so no need
for separate theme purchase. Just an idea.

Example: http://v4-alpha.getbootstrap.com/components/carousel/

[Bug 209479] Incorrect PF NAT rule set in bhyve wiki page

2016-05-22 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=209479

--- Comment #4 from fehmi noyan isi ---
I managed to get my VM's network connection fixed by using an indirect
approach. This email [1] and this forum thread [2] have all details.

In short, what I did was;
- assigning an static IP address to tap0 on the host machine
- assigning an static IP address to vtnet0 on the guest machine
- use tap0 IP address as the defaultrouter in rc.conf
- use pf(4) to forward traffic from tap0 to wlan0

(contents of relevant configration files are give in [2])

I did not use the bridge0 interface, in fact I removed it completely. Using
static IP addresses and PF rules to redirect/NAT the traffic were all needed
for me to get it working.

However, as you have more VMs around, this configuration might get hard to
manage

I still think that bhyve wiki should be updated with more information on the
usage of wlan0 interface with bhyve (have seen some other posts in the Internet
from people having similar/same issues)

The source file for that document may be viewed at
https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/releng/10.3/release/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/relnotes/article.xml?revision=297257=markup
and lives in Subversion. Unfortunately, it is in the base/releng part of the
tree, which means that (1) only the release engineers are authorized to modify
it and (2) it is unlikely to be touched, since the release is already final.

So, while we appreciate the report, I think that WONTFIX is the best resolution
we can come up with given the current system. (Hmm, bugzilla doesn't have that
status. "overcome by events", since the release is final, I guess.)

Correct rule set should be

https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=209429

It's hard to argue with that. My personal take as a release engineer is that
even though the code is final, blatant documentation errata could and should be
fixed in line, since of necessity they become final after the remainder of the
software. In this case it doesn't matter, since the text is merely
descriptive. But if the text were intended to be cut and pasted then it would
merit a post hoc fix, in my view.

The fdescfs(5) man page provides examples of how to mount the file system using
mount(8) or by putting an entry in the fstab(5) file.

The attached patch corrects these examples, as noticed by SirDice on the
FreeBSD forums [1].

Old: fdescfs /dev/fd fdescfs rw 0 0
New: fdesc /dev/fd fdescfs rw 0 0

I don't know if it's a ports issue or a website issue, but there are lots of
ports that don't have a pkg-descr. They will all have this problem. Below are
the first 20 or so I found. So, either all ports should have this file, or the
web site shouldn't show the link for those that don't.

All ports have a pkg-descr file, but it's not always in the port's directory:

m...@aragorn.in:/home/mat/work/freebsd/ports/net/wireshark-qt5 $ make -V DESCR
/home/mat/work/freebsd/ports/net/wireshark-qt5/../wireshark/pkg-descr

Whatever's generating that link gets is wrong.

In Section:

10. Networking

The line:

"A bug in the epair(4) virtual Ethernet interface which could cause a panic
when running ifconfig(8) create and destory quickly has been fixed. [r287594]"

Should probably read 'destroy' rather than 'destory'.

Utterly trivial, I know, but if someone is in that area anyway it should only
take seconds to fix.

Tony.

I aggree that the handbook need a refresh on that

The doc in the handbook is about samba 3.x and according to the official samba
replease planning (https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_Release_Planning)
samba 3.6 is end of live since march 2015 (one year) and their release cycle is
accelerating

I have my onw doc that was working with FreeBSd 10.2 + samba 4.2.7

Well, just now with the very recent updates nothing works anymore, but I hope
it's temporary...and that doesn't change the principles of the installation.
So I can share that doc with you if you feel it can be useful

[Bug 211376] isunordered description in isgreater(3) man page is inverted

The description of the `isunordered()` macro states that it returns non-zero if
none of its parameters are NaNs, whereas it actually returns non-zero if any of
its parameters are NaNs.

I propose changing the sentence:

> The isunordered() macro takes arguments x and y and returns non-zero if
> and only if neither x nor y are NaNs.

to read instead:

> The isunordered() macro takes arguments x and y and returns non-zero if
> and only if any of x or y are NaN.

The word 'any' could be replaced with 'one or both' but I think 'either' tends
to have an exclusive connotation so may not be appropriate.

Bump RAM requirement

The handbook mentions that a FreeBSD installation requires a minimum 64 MB of
RAM. Upon on testing, I discovered that on 9.3 & 10.3 (both amd64 builds)
whilst the kernel boots & installer runs with such an amount, the installer
fails when attempting to extract a set.
On 11-BETA1 it's not actually possible to boot the kernel with less than 96MB
(amd64) or 92MB (i386).

Attached patch increases the minimum RAM requirement for installation to 96MB.

[Bug 211436] Link aggregation setting wlan mac changed in 11

2016-07-28 Thread bugzilla-noreply
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=211436

Bug ID: 211436
Summary: Link aggregation setting wlan mac changed in 11
   Product: Documentation
   Version: Latest
  Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
  Severity: Affects Only Me
  Priority: ---
 Component: Documentation
  Assignee: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org
  Reporter: rwest...@gmail.com

The handbook shows setting up wifi/ethernet failover like this:

> ifconfig_bge0="up"
> ifconfig_iwn0="ether 00:21:70:da:ae:37"
> wlans_iwn0="wlan0"
> ifconfig_wlan0="WPA"
> cloned_interfaces="lagg0"
> ifconfig_lagg0="laggproto failover laggport bge0 laggport wlan0 DHCP"

As of FreeBSD 11, this no longer works. The correct way is like this:

> ifconfig_bge0="up"
> create_args_wlan0="wlanaddr 00:21:70:da:ae:37"
> wlans_iwn0="wlan0"
> ifconfig_wlan0="WPA"
> cloned_interfaces="lagg0"
> ifconfig_lagg0="laggproto failover laggport bge0 laggport wlan0 DHCP"

The relevant section is 30.7, example 30.3.

Patch to add firewall rule to example

natd can have higher utilisation when it sees unnecessary packets.

Adding a rule to send packets out that natd doesn't need to reduces CPU cycles.

For background see
https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ipfw/2013-February/005306.html

My testing and implementation reduced ~50% wcpu to < 1%

[Bug 206619] "About FreeBSD" page promises "full source code"

2016-08-02 Thread bugzilla-noreply

A commit references this bug:

Author: emaste
Date: Tue Aug 2 21:53:12 UTC 2016
New revision: 49208
URL: https://svnweb.freebsd.org/changeset/doc/49208

Log:
update description of included source code on about page

Avoid quibbling over device firmware files that do not include source
code. It's clear from the context that this (perhaps dated) paragraph
is making a comparison to closed-source operating systems, but the
sentence may be interpreted differently in 2016.
