Yeah, that's what I tried wen moving to 12.0 from 11.4 and it left a lot of
cleaning up.

It just doesn't work the way my brain works, and I don't have a bunch of
servers I need to keep updated, and the two servers I am running are different
architecture. Something as simple as "hey, I want to install this one port"
seemed overly complicated. I can see it's great when you have a cluster of
servers and want to manage the updates on a dedicated server, but I don't need
that.

That said:

 # pkg-static upgrade -f
 # portmaster install postfix dovecot

So far, so good (I thought I would have to also redo MariaDB but it all seems
to be working now, mail did not work until I recompiled Dovecot and Postfix,
but I was expecting that.

So far the only thing that is new is an error about pam_opie, but that's for a
new thread.

Ports recompile for 13.0-RELEASE

2021-05-04 Thread @lbutlr
With the move to FreeBSD 13.0 is there a simple (single step) way to reinstall
all the current ports other than saving off a list of the ports and then
stepping through that list to reinstall them? It was very inefficient when
moving to 12.0 as many ports in the list, of course, were dependent on other
ports, but then got recompiled, sometimes multiple times. I know I ended up in
a make loop where came was compiled over and over again until I aborted, listed
the current ports, differ on the previous ports, and picked a port I though
would have a lot of reps to restart the compile. I then did this several more
times to get back to where I had been on 11.x

And there's still no way to tell if a port was installed from pkg or from
ports, correct? Since I use MariaDB instead of MySQLI have to be sure I don't
try to use package for anything that will try to install MySQL instead.

And finally, the release of 13.0 ends the 12.x versions, right? There will not
be a 12.3.

(And yes, I've tried moving to poudrerie several times and we do not get on. At
all.)

FreeBSD 12.2 and MariDB 10.3.28 for me, though not for the original bug report,

As a data point my servers only have 4GB or RAM and gitup runs fine.

(One is a Celeron J1800 and the other an i5-3470, the Celeron is dog slow
running gitup, but it runs).

(~1 minutes for the i5, 25 min for the Celery)

This makes me wish even more there was a simple way to exclude categories for
the ports tree like all the foreign languages and x11 games and audio (for me,
of course)

Actually, all my installed ports only come from these trees:

archivers benchmarks converters databases devel dns editors
ftp lang mail math misc net ports-mgmt print security shells
sysutils textproc and www

I'd love to be able to only sync, download, and check those categories, granted
that include the six largest categories and 8 of the top ten, so not sure how
much it would help, but it would help some.

You only need to install git if you are going to keep git commit hostly and
branches of the ports, which you would already be doing if that was something
you needed, I'd think. Simply updating the ports tree does not require
installing git.

I don't think so, I am pulling the ports tree from the git repo without git
installed.

WITHOUT_PORTSANP added to the default base would be the single, I'd think. Most

gitup is working well right now, but it looks more fiddly and I wish the 'fake

How does that make any difference? If someone gains access to the repo and

Lessons from the PHP git repo "hack"

2021-03-31 Thread @lbutlr
As you may know, PHP has decided to move their repo to GitHub after an
unauthorized "hack" was committed to PHP.

I say "hack" because it appears the code was intentionally obvious and went to
some lengths to draw attention to itself, so it appears someone did this to
highlight issues with the private git repo rather than a real attempt to hack.
These changes were made under authorized accounts despite a 2FA system and it's
unclear at this point how access was gained.

The current Gihub, which was a mirror only, will be the primary repo going
forward and the php git server will be retired.

Which brings me to the reason for this post, as it seems that the ports
collection of FreeBSD 13.x will be in the same position, running a private git
server network and using GitHub as a mirror and I wonder if some lessons from
php's experience with this should be considered for this setup before it's
implemented.

I'm not linking to stories about this because all the ones I can find are
clickbait frothing panic-inducing nonsense rather than looking at what actually
happened.

Maybe Krebs will post something soon.

Just for clarity sakes, running gitup ports wight now would replace running
portsnap?

But we should update it to point to a different server at some point in the
future?

Would I be safe in removing the stable and current blocks from the gitup.conf
file since I will never use those?

Might I suggest that -v should mean -v 1 and -vv should mean -v 2? As it is, -v
means -v 0 and that seems odd?

There's no cron flag, so does this mean we do not need to be concerned with
when the process runs? Is it safe to run it more than once a day? I mean, I
doubt GitHub cares at this point, but looking forward…

It sounds like the version you want is -RELEASE, not -STABLE.

Think of -STABLE as "We are still working on this, but we THINK it's stable" as
opposed to RELEASE "this is ready for general release."

Pinentry

2021-01-25 Thread @lbutlr
I ma trying to figure out why pin entry and pinetnry-tty are installed. If I
try to remove it, I get a list of post that are to be deleted.

Installed packages to be REMOVED:
gnupg: 2.2.27
gpgme: 1.15.1
mimedefang: 2.83_3
mutt: 2.0.4
pinentry: 1.1.0_7
pinentry-tty: 1.1.0
spamass-milter: 0.4.0_4
spamassassin: 3.4.4
subversion: 1.14.0

I've looked through he config for all of these and not seen anything about PIN
entry, and am wondering why it would be required to run any of these packages.

I cannot imagine any circumstances in which I would need to enter a PIN on a
TTY and no one else could possibly do so.

I suspect mutt since it is relatively newly installed, nut I see nothing in the
config that seems like it wold disable this. (Mutt is used as a convenient way
to send html formatted mail of some system events), it is not used to access
mail off the server and is only used by me to access mail on the server.

Not everyone has any use for git our any need to learn git syntax. A "portsnap"

Portmaster and less

2020-07-31 Thread @lbutlr
When postmaster displays the package messages after installing, it calls less,
which forces you to hit 'q' to exit, and when you quit less, it clear the
buffer on the screen and returns you to the display of the compile process.

Is there anyway to change this behavior so that less is called with -E /
--QUIT-AT_EOF? Or can I just tell postmaster to cat this files so they appear
in my terminals scroll back no matter what?

(I think the discarding that text that is paged by less is a terminal emulator
or tmux setting, but haven’t looked into that.)

Well, it was about 1.5GB, and on a gigabit connection it only took time because
it downloaded each file instead of a package/archive.

But I am unlikely to switch branches (and confused as to why the non-RELEASE
13.0 was the default) without updating the entire OS.

Json-c, bind, and updating

2020-06-09 Thread @lbutlr
This has happened in the past, but it happened again this weekend when an
update to ;ibjson-c did not update bind, rendering bind unable to load
libjson-c.so.4 because it had been replaced with libjson-c.so.5.

In a rush I simply linked libjson-c.so.4 -> libjson-c.so.5 and all is happy
AFAICT. Well, at least functional.

There is no update listed for bind because, evidently, "The dns/bind914 port
moved to dns/bind916 Reason: Has expired: End of life, please migrate to a
newer version of BIND9" is not an "update". I mean, yes, this is correct, but
it seems less than helpful. And yet, if I try to install bund914, it will
install 916, so there is an update.

Especially when Bind-tools is happily updated to 9.16

The following actions were performed:
Re-installation of bind-tools-9.16.3_1
Upgrade of bind914-9.14.11 to bind916-9.16.3_2

Sure would have been nice if this had shown up as an available update.

Linux-foldingathome

2020-04-07 Thread @lbutlr
Has anyone had any experience with installing the port
biology/linux-foldingathome?

After installing it and editing the configuration file I try to start it and
get the following:

# service fahclient start

/proc/ is empty.

There were no errors when installing the port.

Why was this changed (I did not install the source and my /usr/src/ directory

How does this help?

# cat /etc/make.conf

PORTS+MODULE=sysutils/lsof

Building lsof still fails

pkg install works.

Don’t see anything in MOVED or UPDATIN about changes to lsof?

Since I built the previous version should I just comment the IGNORE line in the
makefile and not worry about why I
got this error (didn’t get it before).

I’ve tried the magnet (and other magnets) several times. The first time I tried

And this conf file applies when you use the jail named exactly “121-default”?
So for my jail named 121x64 the conf file would be

"121x64-make.conf"

And for 113x86

"113x86-make.conf"

Ok, this is starting to make some sense. Now I just need to get a list of the
ports pon the 11.3 system currently in the form / so I can
at least set that up with the current ports.

Not sure I quite get how the Webserver lets your other machines get the
packages in such a way that they can be dropped in place, but I don’t need to
do that right now anyway (that will be a task for when I have migrated that
machine to 12.1 amd64 anyway), hopefully in the next month.

Hang on a second, so the intended use for poudriere is to build ALL packages?

Right now I have two jails setup, one for 12.1 amd64 and one for 11.3 i386.
That seems like a *LOT* of compiling/building.

And once I’ve build, say, ImageMagick or postfix/doveco/.=mariadb/apache/etc
how do I then deploy them to the 11.3 server (as in, a different machine)?

Thanks everyone for your comments. One more dumb question I can’t find the

Let’s say I want to build and install a single port via poudrier. For the same
of argument some port that has configuration options I want to change.

I have the ports tree setup, have my jail setup, and I want to build it.

And then I want to deploy it to the target machine once it’s built.

Or I want to deploy to to the local machine.

Let’s say, for fun, it’s something like ImageMafick that has a lot that goes
with it.

Am I writing a config file for this every port I want to build?

Starting with poudriere

2020-02-15 Thread @lbutlr
I’ve setup a new FreeBSD 12.1 system and am going to give poudriere a whirl on
it.

The machine is currently setup as a two drive zfs mirror and I have used pkg to
install a few basic things (sudo, zsh, poudriere itself, etc).

I am reading through

 and I have some questions.

First, the example of says that if we don’t change any options, the defaults
will be used. OK, but it makes no mention on how we might change or set
options? Is this simply talking about the build options panels that sometimes
come up (Build examples, support ssl, use sqlite or MySQL, etc), and when I
first go to build a “persistent list” those option screens will come up and I
can make changes and they will be saved? Or is there something else that I need
to do?

Second, let's say that I want to setup the machine to build postfix, dovecot,
apache, pigeonhole, marisadb, postfixadmin, rpoundcube, and horde all in on
“persistent list” since all of these pacajkges are need to do mail and webmail,
do I simply list the packages in a single file the way the page lists
www/firefox?

Once I have poudriere setup and running and I’m comfortable with it, do I need
to do anything to have it “take over” sudo and anything else that I installed
via pkg?

Sorry for the rather basic questions.

If you are concerned about losing users without postmaster then fix postmaster.
Leaving a port manage that is “broken” is not going to do anything but hurt

It is not that simple, of course. This will take quite a lot of work, and a lot

Since openssl updated about a week ago, this oversight falls into the class

Well, at this point I cannot install openssl111 without deinstalling openssl,
which I cannot deinstall since it is gone from ports.

Looks like I have to remove openssl, which … I mean, seriously, this seems
pretty hostile.

MariaDB *is* locked. Both client and server. Pkg update was still going to

A whole lot of X11 cruft gets installed if you do not go through and disable
X11. A LOT. So there is some assumption in the defaults that there will be a

Since I am here, it also wants to install a bunch of X11 packages, but I

how can I tell pkg to run in “don’t enable GUIs” mode?

Rebuild all the ports that depend on python (and any python depends on).

You might also look at what you have that requires python. For example, I
recently;y eliminated almost all the python packages by simply removing scons.
It may come back if something needs scons to build in the future, but for now I
have only three python 3.6 packages installed:

===>>> py36-ply-3.11
===>>> py36-setuptools-41.0.0
===>>> python36-3.6.8_2

These are required for bindutils, but I eliminated the one part of blind tools
that needs put-on I wouldn’t have it at all.

Of course, your setup is different, but it is definitely worth looking at your
depends.

pkg -rd python27

Why is it an issue that lame must be built from ports?

I've run into this many times of the years with many packages. It is always
extreme annoying and I can't see any reason for this behavior.

However, postmaster -o seems to handle things correctly.

Loos like

might be the places to start.

(I am also on postmaster and am at least partially, if not mostly, posting this
to the list so I have an archive of the links :)

What about a configure file or option to exclude certain branches of the ports
tree os I don't have to keep downloading updates to packages I will never run?

For example, I have no need of any of the languages, X11-*, irc, games, cad, or
finance on my mail server.

postfix and postfix-current

2019-04-20 Thread @lbutlr
I see today that

===>>> postfix-current-3.4.20190106,5
  ===>>> New version available: postfix-current-3.5.20190330,5

What is the proper way to move from postfix-current-3.4.20190106,5 to
postfix-3.4.5 (mail/postfix)?

I was on postfix current because the root postfix had not updated to the 3.4
branch, I am not ready to move to 3.5 at this point.

is it enough to simply pkg delete -f postfix-current-3.4.20190106,5 and then
postmaster mail/postfix or is there any other steps to take?

port configuration diff with defaults

2019-04-18 Thread @lbutlr
Is there a way to check if a port is using the default config (make config) and
if not, to see the differences between the default config and the ports current
config?

missing dependency

2019-04-18 Thread @lbutlr
pkg: dovecot has a missing dependency: mariadb100-client
pkg: postfix-current has a missing dependency: mariadb100-client
pkg: net-snmp has a missing dependency: mariadb100-client
pkg: rsyslog has a missing dependency: mariadb100-client
pkg: p5-DBD-mysql has a missing dependency: mariadb100-client

This is correct, as I had to move to mariadb102-cloent, but why aren't the
other packages up=dated with the new version.

I have recently (yesterday) updated all packages.

There was some talk when 3.4.0 came out about withdrawing it, and then the
.1-.4 updates came quite quickly.

I don't know, but I guess, this delayed the port maintainer from moving forward.

/usr/ports/audio/xmms2
/usr/ports/audio/gxmms2

Is there an issue with xmms2?

Port Spamass-rules?

2018-11-20 Thread @lbutlr
When updating Spam Assassin today I noticed that the notes at the end of the
port install still recommend installing mail/spamass-rules.

This should not be done, right?
