I don't have an answer but just a couple days ago I installed from
the ISO 5.4-RELEASE and then used cvsup RELENG_5_4. I then made a
jail without problem just like you did above. make distribution had
no problems and the jail works fine. I did not actually use the
master.passwd file from the jail as I had a tarred up etc for my
jails but in doing the build it did not error out. So maybe you want
to start from scratch and try again?

I don't have a solution to your problem, but I have also noticed that
embedded plotting does not seem to work. I glanced quickly at the
Makefile but noticed nothing pertinent; however I haven't spent any
time looking for a solution.

When I run the tests, I do not get the same error as you. I also run
CMUCL. If you run the test several times, do you always get that
error?

Nope. Actually, I ran the test a few times (see output to follow).
The first time, there were no errors. Then, when I exited the
command, I noticed that there were some additional error messages
(see those below the test errors). Any insight?

Is the command 'startkde' in the .xinitrc file in your home directory?
If not, try adding it to the file, then execute 'startx'.

inbound ssh ceased on 4 servers at same time

2005-06-04 Thread John Brooks
Yesterday at about noon, all four freebsd servers on a clients lan
quit accepting ssh connections. All were running 4.11-release-p4,
and had been cvsup'd at the same time from cvs-10, cvs-11, or
cvs-12. Outbound ssh (from console of the affected boxes) works as
expected, both to local openbsd boxes and to remote locations.
There are no host based firewalls involved, and all other network
services are operating correctly. Netstat shows port 22 as listening.
At 11:20 am (40 minutes earlier), ssh was working properly on all boxes.

Has anybody encountered a situation like this before?

Yes, if you make sure that both DIMMs accept the same voltage range.

The memory should work at DDR-266 speeds, but you may need to back
off the memory timings (ie, go to CAS-3) for the system to be
stable. For example, I have one system which was using a 512MB
PC2700 (DDR-266?) DIMM, and I added a 1GB PC3500 DIMM. It would work
fine at PC2100 (DDR-233), and almost work fine at PC2700-- but would
generate a memtest error every few hours.

almost stable isn't good enough. Since the system ran faster using
just the 1GB stick at full speed, rather than trying to combine both,
I've moved the 512MB stick elsewhere.

If you do combine memory of different speeds, be sure to test the
combination out overnight using memtest or some similar utility.

Securelevel 2 VS OpenNTPd

Hello,

I'm about to use ntpd to synchronise my server's clock to a time server
and also provide time server, but I use securelevel 2 that denies to
change the system time with a step greater than 1s. So, I'm afraid it
could work with securelevel 2. Is there any method to get them work with

ntpd normally changes time in steps much smaller than 1s. The exception
is at boottime where it might be necessary to make a large change, but
this normally happens before the securelevel is raised.

In short, there shouldn't be any problems.

FreeBSD 5.4 Xwindows

2005-06-04 Thread delta . ski
First things first. What module did you load for the card. My guess (because I
did this myself) was to use ATI, but you need RADEON. And, in the
sysinstall setup for video, you most likely selected vga, sometimes vesa
works better!

Now the fun part. If you look in Xorg.conf, you will see the screen resolution
selections.(Sorry, I will let you find that setup file for yourself=better to
remember for future changes!) Yours will indicate 640x480. This will need
to be changed to the resolution your monitor will support. But all this is in
the X docs, give them a good look. They are complicated, but repeated study
will reveal the answers.

Don't Forget to use the propper Mhz for the Vertical and Horizontal
capabilities of your monitor. Very important if the monitor is older and
lacks limit protection, easy to fry the monitor! This is all so complicated
at first.

Please give the X docs a little study time and you will see the answers.
Tough learning, only challenges builds the mind!

Eclipse - bug problem resolution for freebsd?

2005-06-04 Thread Vizion
Hi

During the past week I have posted a couple of reports about the bug referred
to below on the freebsd-java mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED] is also listed as
the maintainer for this port) but so far not received any acknowledgement or
response so I guess either the person who has previously maintained this was
either not around this week or has too much on his/her plate to deal with it
right now. In these circumstances I am is a copy of my posting today to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] in the hope that some could help me identify a
capable committer.
---
Posted tday:
Subject: can eclipse-devel port be upgraded to 3.02 ?
To: freebsd-java.org, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Body:
I have now found a fix is available by using the 3.02 upgrade. I cannot seem
to reach any individual who would knows how to produce an upgrade or be in a
position to commit one. Is anyone here able to advise on that might be
achieved. If anyone here wants details of the bug I can provide them. Here is
a copy of the email posted

There is a bug in the current version 3.7M based on:
eclipse-sourceBuild-srcIncluded-3.1M7.zip which provides a serious problem for
new users - the help file system does not work.

I understand from contributors to the eclipse forum that that bug is fixed in
the latest version which is, I believe, 3.02. Apparently a fix for that bug
was checked in very recently.

Is there any chance that the new version (3.02?) with any late fixes could be
made available for the freebsd java ports tree?

It would be most appreciated if that could be done as soon as someone has the
time available.

A big thank you , in advance

David

2005-06-04 Thread John Brooks
sshd is running on the affected machines

no errors on console or logs, just times out waiting for
the password prompt. interestingly: when investigating this
at the console, attempting ssh sessions from the db server
and backup server to the file server (these two are 'deeper'
in the network so there was never an occasion to ssh FROM
them before) produced the std warning about an unknown host
prompting for inclusion in the ~/.ssh/known_hosts file.

dns is not really involved, the ssh session is sent to the
ip address directly as in ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

ping works in both directions as does all other network
services (internal mysql, intranet http, pop3, smtp, smbd,
nmdb, dns). network hardware and cabling issues have been
effectively ruled out.

Have you tried ssh with the -vvv switch to get extra debugging info at
the console? If there's anything happening with ssh, it should show up
there, I'd expect. Are you testing to/from multiple hosts here? If so,
what's different between each set of hosts you're testing?

Hope that helps,

Have not tried the -vvv switch, good call, I have several other
networks running the same versions of FreeBSD that are not affected
so that will make for a good comparison. Will do that later this
evening.

I have tested each of the four boxes in the following ways:

From OpenBSD firewall to each of the four FreeBSD servers: times out
From each FreeBSD server to the OpenBSD firewall: works as expected
From each FreeBSD server to off network BSD boxes: works as expected
From each FreeBSD server to other FreeBSD server: times out

For the last 18 months I have almost daily ssh'd into these 5 boxes
for maintenance, programming, logs, mail tracing, backups, etc. I am
the only login shell user on them. I had been in the network on these
boxes earlier in day, before this started. There were no config changes
made. That is part of what is puzzling, and to happen to all four boxes
at the same time is cause for conceern. The why of it all is my primary
objective at this point.

I'll post the results of the -vvv switch a little later this evening.

Unable to build PORT

I am attempting to update this port:

with this port:

apr-nothr-gdbm-db4-1.0.1_1

In the Makefile there is listed a 'CONFLICKS = apr-*'

I have not been able to build this port, since it stops with an error

first of all, whats the exact error output that you get?

secondly, are there any infos about this port in the changelog? (or was

Gnumeric warnings

2005-06-04 Thread Anthony M. Agelastos

Hello all,

I wanted to start out by saying thank you to everyone who has given me
help and has contributed to making this a good OS and community. Down to
business... I just installed Gnumeric from Ports and when I invoke it,
it appears to work fine, but I do see warnings printed (see below). Is
this normal? Is it a bug; I searched around and the closest thing I found is

http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnumeric-list/2004-September/msg00032.html

However, the author of that post gave directions to fix it for Debian.
Will this fix work for FBSD 5.4-STABLE? Is there anything else I should
know about it? Why is there a problem in the first place? Any insight
and information on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
for your help and time.

Alternate good and bad times!!! I rebooted the machine to no effect. The
problem seems to go away on its own for a few hours then comes back. I
ran tcpdump saw nothing different between the times this behaviour was
seen the times it wasnt.

The machine is running IPFW, isc-dhcp server and nat.

Any thoughts??

does traceroute yield anything interesting? (from either end?) - ping
times over a second sounds like a routing problem maybe outside the machine.

I've also seen weird results with machines hat have USB serial ports on
them where the machine dies for up to 16 seconds then comes back and all
the ping packets come back at once with delays from a few ms to 16
seconds in one second steps.

Re: FreeBSD 5.4 Xwindows

First things first. What module did you load for the card. My guess (because
 I
did this myself) was to use ATI, but you need RADEON. And, in the
sysinstall setup for video, you most likely selected vga, sometimes vesa
 works better!

With Vesa I get an error driver not found. The only other option is to
use ATI which does load, but I get a waring re the PCI bus ID and then a
fatal error. Looking at it with Windows it seems to use 2 bus ID's 1:0:0
and 1:0:1.

Now the fun part. If you look in Xorg.conf, you will see the screen
 resolution
selections.(Sorry, I will let you find that setup file for yourself=better to
remember for future changes!) Yours will indicate 640x480.

Thanks Don,

I'll go and tinker some more tomorrow.
