Thanks for the quick reply. I went to the page and have been looking
at their software. I do see that there are drivers. I can't locate
any management software though, do you know what the name of the
product is? (are you using it?) --

If you unpack the zip file you'll get MegaRC zip file upzip it and then
do chmod 755 megarc and then run ./megarc ?

You/all get al ist of comands for managing the RAID.

What is the Adaptec model for this IBM card? Most of the standard
Adaptec cards seem to have SW that works.

First, apologies, my fingers slipped - the card is a 6i. I have been
unable to locate the Adapec equivalent and I've even seen that some
cards have been made for them by LSI - the chipset on the mobo
(xSeries 345) is from LSI. But in fact the box this card came in has
both the IBM and Adaptec logos so this one is indeed from Adaptec.

There is a P/N 13N2190 but I can't match it with Adaptec and think
it's an IBM number.

This is great - if indeed i can't get the Adaptec to work, i'll have
to look into the Megaraid (LSI) card. Thank you.

I'd of course greatly prefer to find something that works with the
card that I own... :)

Adpatec guys has very lil support for BSD's. So doubt it, but anyways

I couldn't get that to work ( without ACPI ) I had to install with
ACPI but this was 5.4-RELEASE but using the 5.3 driver from
highpoints site as there wasn't a 5.4 driver available.
1. Boot from cd
2. got to boot prompt, load the driver from floppy
3. unplug the floppy ( must to this as floppy under amd64 is
broken )
4. boot the kernel and install.

Notes:
1. I was using a RAID 5 array 5 disks * 400Gb.
2. Create the array using 16 k stripe or the performance will be
poor.

the card from Highpoint Web.

The problem is when I make the partitions and the machine tries to
format the partitions it says:

unable to find device node for /dev/da0s1b under /dev!

and then it comes out.

Any ideas what is going on. Also tried making two slices no luck.

Hi all,

Ok, The 3ware and Highpoint works fine with 4GB of RAM. But I can hook
another 4GB wiht 3ware and it works fine wiht 8GB but thats not the case
for Highpoint.

Highpoint dont work with installation of 4GB and then inserting 4GB.
And it works fine wiht ACPi disables and floppy is present.

You should probably provide the appropriate information from dmesg
output, along with what you expect it to be, and the outputs of the dd
command.

#dd if=/dev/zero of=/usr/junk bs=8192

Shouldnt it be around 54MB/s for a regular IDE drive.

What about other block sizes? Also - you should paste your actual dd
output here too.
What's the model number of that drive? Maxtor claims (on one of
their 160G drives) 17.8MB/s from inner diameter disk and 35.6MB/s for
outer diameter for the 5400rpm drives.

Yes, try 64k instead of 8k, and also compare read speeds. If you have
the time (could take an hour or so), try dd if=/dev/ad0 of=/dev/null
bs=64k, run an iostat 60 in another window, let the dd run through
the entire disk, and compare the relative speeds from start to finish.
For the DiamondMax 160, the sustained throughput should be 26MB - 50MB
as you go from inner to outer tracks.

OK with the above dd
dd if=/dev/ad0 of=/dev/null bs=64k
it gives me 56MB/s. from the start.

So how does the block size makes the difference?? What is the true

Adaptec 7902- Raid -Support Under FreeBSD 5.3

2005-02-24 Thread Amandeep Pannu
Hi all,

I have a Supermicro MB wiht onboard Adaptec SCSI 7902 chipset. Now the big
question under http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.3R/hardware-i386.html
it says this one is supported but when i try to install 5.3 it simply
doesnt work neither does 5.3 RC1. RC1 sees the drives but not single raid
but two separate drives.
Here are some combinations I tried.

FreeBSD 5.3-Release onboard RAID--Doesn’t work.
FreeBSD 5.3-RC-1 onboard RAID--Works but sees single drives not RAID
FreeBSD 4.11 onboard RAID--Works but sees single drives not RAID.

FreeBSD 5.3-Release Adaptec 2120S--Doesn’t work.
FreeBSD 5.3-RC-1 Adaptec 2120S-Doesn’t Work.
FreeBSD 4.11 Adaptec 2120S-Works.

FreeBSD 5.3-Release LSI Logic Megaraid 320-1- Doesn’t work.
FreeBSD 5.3-RC-1 LSI Logic Megaraid 320-1-Works
FreeBSD 4.11 LSI Logic Megaraid 320-1-Works

Any hints or clues.

Thanks in advance
