upgrade from 6.3 to 7.0 problems

2008-11-14 Thread Cam

Hello,

I have a botched upgrade from 6.3-release to 7.0-release on my hands.
The 'make buildworld', 'make buildkernel' and 'make installkernel' went
fine. 'Make installworld' did not - I think I forgot to drop into
single-user mode but did not keep good notes.

uname -a:
FreeBSD server.shiner.ca 7.0-RELEASE-p5 FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE-p5 #0: Tue
Oct 14 10:16:32 CDT 2008
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

Here is a hint of the problem (there is a bad duplex to clean up , which
is my next task):

server# gmirror remove gm0 ad3
Userland and kernel parts are out of sync.

I cannot install the world in single-user mode:

# cd /usr/src
# env -i make installworld
mkdir -p /tmp/install.9f0tXCFc
for prog in [ awk cap_mkdb cat chflags chmod chown date echo egrep find
grep install-info ln lockf make mkdir mtree mv pwd_mkdb rm sed sh

I tried to rebuild the world from scratch by following these
instructions from handbook section 24.4:

chflags –R noschg /usr/obj/usr
rm –rf /usr/obj/usr
cd /usr/src
make cleandir
make cleandir
cd /usr/src/usr.sbin/mergemaster
./mergemaster.sh –p
cd /usr/obj
chflags –R noschg *
rm –rf *
cd /usr/src
env –i make buildworld
env –i make -DALWAYS_CHECK_MAKE buildkernel
env –i make -DALWAYS_CHECK_MAKE installkernel
reboot in single-user
fsck –p
mount –u /
mount –a –t ufs
swapon –a
adjkerntz –i
cd /usr/src
env –i make installworld

reboot

Blech. I've floundered about without success. How can I clean up this
mess? All comments and thoughts welcome. I have not tried a binary
upgrade. Will re-install but as a last option.

Many thanks,

CARP issue with 2 Masters

2008-10-05 Thread frank . cam
Hi

I have CARP running on a master and a slave server and for some unknown reason
the slave continues to classify itself as a master, even though the advskew is
higher than on the master.
It appears that queries sent to the CARP ip address go to the master 50% of the
time and the slave 50% of the time when both servers are up. This plays havoc
with my databases as I synchronise them asynchronously.

When I take the carp interface down on the slave using 'ifconfig carp0 down
ifconfig carp0 up' it lists it's status as 'backup' for about 10 seconds and
then goes back to 'master'.

Both servers run identical versions of FreeBSD 7.0 with all the same installed
ports on identical hardware.

The kernel has the following differences from the standard amd64 kernel:
ident DBKERNEL
options SCHED_ULE
device carp

The standard kernel includes options PREEMPTION which is mentioned as a
possible problem in the handbook with the slave not relinquishing the ip
address when the master comes back, but that's not exactly what I'm getting
here.

Here are the relevant setup details for the boxes.

MASTER
uname -a
FreeBSD dbmaster.xxx.net 7.0-RELEASE-p5 FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE-p5 #1: Fri Oct 3

carp: MASTER vhid 1 advbase 1 advskew 0

SLAVE
uname -a
FreeBSD dbslave.xxx.net 7.0-RELEASE-p5 FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE-p5 #1: Fri Oct 3
13:54:42 EST 2008 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/DBKERNEL amd64

/etc/rc.conf

inet 192.168.2.10 netmask 0xfff8
carp: MASTER vhid 1 advbase 1 advskew 200

With the advskew on the 'slave', I've tried values of 100, 200, 230, 240 and
250 with no difference in performance.

I've also tried ifconfig_carp0=vhid 1 advskew 200 pass mypassword backup
192.168.2.10/29 on the slave but this simply locks it into INIT.

I can't figure out if I missed a step in the documentation, made a silly
mistake in my setup, or found a bug. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

2008-10-05 Thread Frank Cam
Hi Matthew

That did the trick, have accidentally been using an old pre-carp set of
firewall rules for the last few days. After your response, I went back and
updated to the new rule-set. It's always the simple things.

Thank you, your response was greatly appreciated.

Frank

I have CARP running on a master and a slave server and for some unknown

 and
  then goes back to 'master'.

Have you by any chance firewalled out the multicast packets that CARP uses
to test for interface death? If either one of a CARP pair can't see CARP
 packets
frequently enough it will think the other is down and promote itself to
 master.

If your firewall is blocking, then add a rule like this on both machines:

pass quick on $ext_if proto carp \
from $ext_if:network to $carp_mcast keep state

 $carp_mcast is defined as 224.0.0.18

   Cheers,

   Matthew

gmirror - one provider won't activate

2007-04-19 Thread Cam Baillie
Hello,

I set up a RAID 1 duplex following the well-laid out OnLamp article. I had
successfully synchronised both disks prior to rebooting. Then I rebooted and
the ad3 disk wouldn't activate.

The system boots off of ad0 while slices within ad1 and ad3 are supposed to
serve as the duplex. The duplex (/dev/mirror/gm0) mounts successfully to
/usr/home so I have access to my data from ad1.

I am running 6.2-release. The dmesg and fstab files are attached.

Thank you!
Cam

FreeBSD 6 SMP APIC lock up

2006-03-04 Thread cam
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I decided to spend the day upgrading my Dual Pentium Pro 200
system from FreeBSD 4.9 to FreeBSD 6.0 RELEASE. Unfortunately,
it looks like my system is no longer supported.

With APIC and SMP compiled into my custom kernel (essentially
GENERIC with SMP and a lot of stuff turned off), I get a lock
up during boot:

...

unknown: PNP0303 can't assign resources (port)
unknown: PNP0c01 can't assign resources (memory)
unknown: PNP0501 can't assign resources (port)
unknown: PNP0401 can't assign resources (port)
unknown: IBM37a0 can't assign resources (port)
Timecounters tick every 1.000 msec

.. Locks up here ..

If I use GENERIC with APIC, I can get past this point, but
the system is VERY slow. It takes an hour or so for the
system to completely boot to the login. !!

With GENERIC and APIC disabled, the system works fine and
boots to the login at a normal speed, about a minute. But
no SMP of course.

I have played endlessly with the BIOS options, disabling
all unnecessary options, etc, with no luck. Also, there are
no upgrades for my BIOS.

Any ideas/hints/suggestions? I would hate to have to go
all the way back to 4.9!

Thank you,
