multiple ports trees
Hello, list! I've got about six production servers and a couple of workstations running FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE and 6.2-PRERELEASE. Some of these machines are sitting in DMZ, the others are internal. Currently, each of them has their own ports tree. How terrible of an idea would it be to take one of the production servers that isn't really doing a whole lot of work, and make it's /usr/ports available over NFS to the other machines? Am I headed in a bad direction here? Also, what about user accounts between machines? I got to thinking that because some of the servers have the same user accounts, would it be possible to share a password file or home directories? Should I build another box strictly for this purpose? If so, could you point me to some documentation for achieving such a goal? Thank you for your time! cmh -- Christopher M. Re: Using wget to mirror just part of a web site?
wget -m -nH -r http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists -o /var/log/${site}_mirror.log But that gets the whole sit. What I want to do is just start at the toop of the ubuntu/dists tree. Perhaps the '--no-parent' knob would be of some help? cmh -- Christopher M. Hobbs IS Technician, City of Siloam Springs [EMAIL PROTECTED], (479).524.5136 pgpeuzdhR3kdx.pgp Description: PGP signature
printer recommendation
Could anyone recommend a good desktop laser jet printer that is known to work under FreeBSD. I don't mind if it's an older model. I'd like to go cheap with it. I will be printing black and white planning sheets, and portions of books. Is there a list of printers that are useable under FreeBSD somewhere? Thank you for your time! cmh -- Christopher M. RE: FreeBSD as a kiosk system for reading/writing e-mail
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Why not set up a webmail interface, and lock down your favorite web browser as a kiosk? I've set up several kiosks using firefox and R-kiosk on top of FreeBSD for patrons at a local library. They have access to browse web pages and nothing more. You could even go so far as to edit the hosts file, use a proxy, or put them behind a firewall to restrict what sites they can visit (i.e. your webmail interface). cmh - -- Christopher M. How else can I get flash to work so I can perhaps persuade them to try FBSD? I have KDE and Firefox installed obviously. I tried loading a few of the flash packages available in the ports, but they did not not seem to work. Thanks! This works for me, make sure you have the src tree under /usr/src. http://www.unixlike.com.br/?p=%2081 There's an english translation somewhere, but if you just follow the commands you'll be ok. Bob I put together a really quick translation at work a while back for some co-workers. http://altbit.org/?p=111 Isn't the linux flash plugin 7 (used in this article) broken anyhow? See: http://www.freshports.org/www/linux-flashplugin7/ I've been trying to install it on a new machine with little luck. I normally don't have any problems, so it's probably just an oversight on my part. cmh - -- Christopher M. gcc issue in 5.3
Greetings list, I'm a first time poster. I hope I get this right. I'm running a fresh install of 5.3-RELEASE. Every time I attempt to install anything from the ports tree, gcc fails. Nine times out of ten it states that there has been an internal error, and that I should submit a bug report. I've considered building a different version of gcc, but I obviously need a working C compiler to do that. Are there gcc binaries for FreeBSD (x86). Right now I'm looking to move to a STABLE branch, but I'd rather fix my current problem and move on. Is this possible, or would a fresh install be my best bet? Thanks!! -- C.M. Laptop and DHCP
Greetings! I suppose this is a newbie question, but I figured I'd give these lists a shot. I just installed FreeBSD 5.0 on my laptop, and I have a 3COM Megahertz PCMCIA card (Model 3CCE589ET to be exact). I have a cable modem (I'm using DCHP with that) that goes into a Linksys router and 4 port switch (serving up DHCP internally), then into a Linksys hub. All of the other computers on the network can access the internet just fine, and are assigned IPs without a problem. I just can't seem to get this laptop onto the network for some reason. I only have 3 other computers on the network. 2 Linux (Mandrake and Slackware) boxes, and one WinXP Pro box. One of the linux boxes is on the hub with this laptop. Any idea what I need to do to set this up to access the internet? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide! Regards, C.M. Hobbs This e-mail was scanned by RAV Antivirus.
