LAPTOP COMPATIBILITY w FreeBSD : Toshiba Satellite A300-13I

2009-03-08 Thread George Katsanos
Hello users,

I am strongly considering of installing FreeBSD on my laptop
as my primary O/S but before I do so I would like to ask if someone between
you has already done it and if so, if all hardware parts function as they
should.

Thanks for your time,

George

KDE Konqueror:Can i have konqueror without KDEstuff port

2005-11-09 Thread George Katsanos

KDE is a huge package , and if you're trying to portupgrade to p3 550 that's
a hard thing to do.3 days now! :-(
I just want konqueror , is there any way [or do you know the exact port]
that will save me from installing kde base , kde , kdelibs and zillions of
kde stuff [which I hate] at my computer?

Also , when I start konqueror 'kdeinit' is run also ! 3 instances of it.any
way of avoiding that?

Thanks

Basic Port Management.Is there any?

2005-10-31 Thread George Katsanos
Hello ! ,

As a fresh Freebsd user[and fan] I am trying to set up my WM / X environment
and choose the apps I will use for basic stuff.
Text Editors , Image viewers , Mail apps , FileManagers.

So after I see some screenshots [it would be very nice and handy if some
screenshots could be added to the freebsd.org/ports database] I'm making
install the port to check it out. Some times , I decided that I don't like
it . So my first though is to get rid of it , cause I don't want ''trash''
on my system.
I'm making deinstall [or pkg_delete] to remove it. Everything ok so far ,
but what about the one zillion dependant pkg's the app made?
You can say , do a pkg_delete -r . Yes but this will may delete also pkgs
that are Needed by other ports/apps..

Is there any good plan solution for this ?...

Freebsd / FireFox / Macromedia Flash : The Quest

2005-10-31 Thread George Katsanos

I m currently trying to figure how I m gonna have a Flash Plugin at my
Firefox.
I know there are like 5 or 6 threads on the mailing list archive about this
, but some different than others , and some buggy!
I see know that to have the linuxflashplugin pkg's installed I'm downloading
like..zillions of Linux compatibility pkgs like gtk and atk rpms and much
much more.

Question is this : Why don't 'we' have a Freebsd native flash plugin and we
need to run Linux compat stuff ?
Is it a Macromedia Licence issue?
Is it a Firefox issue ?
Is it a freebsd team thing?

Thanks

(no subject)

2005-10-27 Thread George Katsanos
Hello ,

Since the actual 6.0 Release is taking too long , would you suggest me
installing 6.0 RC-1 and then then 6.0 is out , can I just apply some patches
, or I should Re-makeworld everything?...

And another question , I'm on a PIII 550 with 256MB ram . I have 5.3 and
some broken libs .Would you suggest me doing a fresh install , or a make
world ? Consider I don't have the experience the second procedure takes ,
but I've heard both opinions. Should I do a portupgrade -a after the
makeworld ?...

Thank you

George

Portupgrading - portauditing

2005-02-26 Thread George Katsanos

Hello,

Your team is ALWAYS very helpful . It's the best support i've ever dealt with.

Question : How do i portupgrade , just the pkgs/ports that portaudit -a sais
have vulnerabilities, and not the whole thing?

Thank you

Mounting a network drive - winxp/nfs

2004-12-08 Thread George Katsanos

Dear Sir,

I want to see the files of the other computer of my 2-pc lan , which runs
winxp and has a nfs filesystem.

I know that i must edit /etc/fstab , and use the smbfs utility as told on the
FAQ .

But i could not run smbfs command , and other commands like smbutil , ask a
lot of arguments and so , i cant find my way through this.

Can you give me some basic information on how to do this (i know that RTFM is
the way , but i really can't get the idea of this,i just know i must mount
the network drive like a normal harddisk device , and put it on a folder )

Thank you

Question about PORTUPDATE

2004-12-07 Thread George Katsanos

Hello,

I have installed FREEBSD 5.3 some days ago , and while i was reading the
handbook , i followed some instructions of it , and did the following things:

installed CVSup to update my port collection , and then
created a db of the ports with pkgdb -F command.

scaned my ports with portaudit and got 11 results, for various packages.

I decided to update these packages with portupdate.

i typed : su-2.05b# portupgrade kdegraphics-3.3.0 -r
And i got :
Updating the ports index ... Generating INDEX.tmp - please wait..

i Was waiting and waiting and waiting,but in vain.after 1 hour,nothing.
I run bsd on a P3550,128mb ram,hdd 20gb.

i decided to ctrl+c the procedure, and got this output :
^Cfailed to generate INDEX!
index generation error
/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/portsdb.rb:482:in `open_db': database file
error (PortsDB::DBError)

from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/portsdb.rb:822:in

from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/pkgdb.rb:907:in `each'
from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/pkgdb.rb:907:in `tsort_build'
from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/pkgdb.rb:929:in `sort_build'
from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/pkgdb.rb:933:in `sort_build!'
from /usr/local/sbin/portupgrade:674:in `main'

from /usr/local/sbin/portupgrade:207:in `new'
from /usr/local/sbin/portupgrade:207:in `main'
from /usr/local/sbin/portupgrade:1845

So , it is logical to wait THAT long for the INDEX.TMP file to be created or
it isn't my fault?..Waiting for your reply

Thanks in advance,
George
