Start X hangs the computer

2005-12-24 Thread Javier Matos
Hello, I was searching about my problem in a lot off forums but I don´t find
a solution... .

I Install FreeBSD 6.0 in my box (I have 2 boxes and FreeBSD was installed in
both). The first one work fine with all
the configuration that I make but the second (boxes are different) have
problems because I can start startx, xdm
and kdm and it show the screen for a while with the correct resolution but
then the screen freeze and after some
seconds the box restart... . I can´t find any reason for this behaviour
because log files seems to show that all is

working. I follow the same steeps with two boxes but only one can run X.

The box who crashes is a P5GD1_PRO (Intel 915P chipset), my graphic card is
a GeForce FX 6200 (PCI-Express).

Anyone have any idea about the what is the problem?

kde hangs at first start...

2005-12-07 Thread Javier Matos
Hi, I install FreeBSD 6.0 in my box and create the file xorg.conf.new with
rights values. Then I try it with Xorg -config ... (and it works fine)... but
when I try to start kde (writing kdm in the console as root) the screen
change his resolution trying to start kde but when appear the screen where you
must to type your user and password the computer hangs.

I try this in two computers and obtain the same effect (and both have PCI
Express graphic card).

Motherboard: P5GD1_PRO (Intel 915 Chipset)
Graphic card: nVidia GeForce FX 6200 128Mb

Someone trying to install FreeBSD 6.0 with a PCI Express graphic have a similar
problem?

Thx!

how to copy MBR??

2005-12-03 Thread Javier Matos
Hi, I will change the hard drive of my computer and I was thinking that maybe
it can run if I make partitions in the new hard drive (the same number of
partitions using the same device name), copy all the files contained in the old
hard drive to the new one and finally copy MBR from old hard drive to the new
one... .

Can it be a solution to the problem of changing hard drives of my computer or
that that I tell is a stupid thing??

Thx

2005-12-01 Thread Javier Matos
Hi, I need to compile a program to run it in a linux box.
I know that freebsd has linux compatibility with binary files.

Can I compile using freebsd gcc a binary file that can run under linux and try
if it works with freebsd binary linux emulation??

If it is possible... what kind of options need I to put when I compile with gcc?

Thx!

Re: problem with vidcontrol

2005-11-14 Thread Javier Matos
Thank you for your answer Gilbert. I find that the problem is in a bug in
kernel or in my motherboard because when I use vidcontrol to change the
resolution with only one module it works fine... but when I put the second
module in the motherboard... it fails

I notify to FreeBSD the problem writing it in problem reports

# Options to change console resolution
optionsVESA
optionsSC_PIXEL_MODE

I have done the same on my laptop. Well, I only compiled a new kernel
with SC_PIXEL_MODE and I load the VESA module on boot.

The problem is that when I try to change to a graphic resolution like
800x600x16, 1024x768x16 or 1280x1024x16 my computer hangs and the box
sometimes start to make a continuous noise with the internal speaker.

I assume you did use vidcontrol -i mode and then you are trying to
change the raster resolution using :

vidcontrol MODE_XXX

where XXX is the code for the mode you want, and which appears as
supported when using vidcontrol -i mode ?

When I use vidcontrol -i mode I can see that the modes that I try are
supported by my hardware, modes like 273, 276, 279 and 282.

Some won't work. On my own laptop (Thinkpad IBM X30) I have some modes
that either give me a black screen while others give me a faint display
with flickering vertical refresh.

I use the real resolution from the 12 screen and it works : 1024x768
using 16 bit (works in 32 bit also).

Have you loaded on this terminal a 8x8 font so the display is OK when
you change the resolution too ?

problem with vidcontrol

2005-11-13 Thread Javier Matos
Hello, I will explain my problem... I hope that someone can indicate me a
possible solution... .

I was setting all necessary in my kernel to use resolutions like 1024x768 or
above and I add the next lines to my kernel

# Options to change console resolution
optionsVESA
optionsSC_PIXEL_MODE

The problem is that when I try to change to a graphic resolution like
800x600x16, 1024x768x16 or 1280x1024x16 my computer hangs and the box sometimes
start to make a continuous noise with the internal speaker.

I test that modes before format and install the OS because my previous HDD was
broken.
When I use vidcontrol -i mode I can see that the modes that I try are supported
by my hardware, modes like 273, 276, 279 and 282.
Before change my hard drive that modes were possible... why now they are not
possible?

a simple question...

2005-11-04 Thread Javier Matos
Hello, I´m a student of computer science and this year I must to do an
application using system calls.
We are using linux system calls like pid_t fork(void) and other services of
the standard POSIX. I want to know if it´s possible to use that system calls in
FreeBSD because I prefer to improve my use of freebsd. I will write my
application in C and I have freebsd 5.4 with linux compability activated.

Thanks for all!
