We just had a similar situation with an NForce4 onboard GigE NIC. We
were using a linux OS, but it turns out it was the 100mb switch we had
it plugged into. Near as I can tell, the switch and the NIC had trouble
auto-negotiating the connection rate. Once we connected the GigE NIC to
a GigE switch, the NIC worked beautifully.

I'm not sure what "MII read timed out" means, but the OS does see the
NIC and appears to be attempting to use it. You may want to check to see
if it's the switch you're connecting to rather then the OS you're running.

Re: forum software / hosting

2006-01-25 Thread Jordan Michaels

Hi Steve,

I've responded to your messages in-line below:

Steve Camp wrote:

I need to setup a web forum for a friend, and sure could appreciate
some pointers.

Some of my questions/issues include:

1) Which forum software runs on FreeBSD?

By forum software, I am referring to programs such as

   o phpBB
o vBulletin by Jelsoft

FreeBSD supports several different programming languages - including
PHP. Any kind of forum software that is programmed in these supported
languages should be able to run without too much effort on a FreeBSD
system. If you do you something free/open source like phpBB, be sure to
keep it up to date and patched. It's a common target for script kiddies
once an exploit has been found.

2) Suggestions for hosting services

At a recent Colorado SAGE meeting, a fellow told me that hosting
services exist where I can get a "virtual Linux" box for $20/month
or so. I specify how much physical memory, disk space etc. that I
need, and I get a "virtual Linux" system, but for all intents and
purposes, it looks and acts like it's own system.

Does FreeBSD have any similar ability to "virtualize"?
Are any hosting services offering FreeBSD servers for as little as
$15-25 / month? If not, for how little $/month might I find a
FreeBSD server hosted by someone else? Recommendations of hosting
   services welcome.

It sounds like you're talking about VPS's, or Virtual Private Servers.
These are becoming very common-place n the Internet. This link should
get you started:

http://www.google.com/search?q=freebsd+vps

3) Is anyone familiar with web forum software? Can you point me to
   any of:

   o Usenet groups
o Web forums for forum admins
o rules of thumb for estimating bandwidth requirements /
system sizing for estimated numbers of users?

Forums take up very little space and bandwidth in general, but as always
it depends on what you use it for and what you allow your clients to do
with it. If you're just running a default install, a couple MB should
get you covered.

Many thanks,

Does anyone know whatever became of the FreeBSD logo contest? Did they
get a new logo or did no one win? Just curious!

Re: Please don't change Beastie to another logo such asNetBSD!!!

2005-02-17 Thread Jordan Michaels

Only my personal experience. In addition to not being
comfortable with
the BSD logo, a couple of the programmers here didn't like my
Ouija-board mouse pad, because they associated it with the occult, and
thus The Devil.

Man, you must have a hell of a lot of fun with these people. What
do they do when you start citing biblical verses that blow the
crap out of their preconceptions?
Ted
I learned years ago that it is a waste of time. They just say it
doesn't apply because .

And I thought the Ouija-board mouse pad was one of the funniest things
I've ever seen.

As an aside to this, I for one know plenty of good, decent, "religious"
people who are quite content to live their lives according to their own
beliefs without insisting on forcing those beliefs on others. Of course,
if you ask them, they'll talk about it with you, but they will not
insist that you live your life a certain way simply because they are
present. Just because your own experience includes interaction with a
few overbearing religious people, please do not be so quick to judge
what is, for the most part, a peace-loving community. Unfortunately it's
usually the loud, overbearing, fire and brimstone kind of people who get
all the religious publicity and misrepresent what most of the religious
community stands for.

Im wondering, if its possible for the /path/to/php can be made dynamic.
i.e. Have the file still look as if it is a shell script, but
the path to the executable is determined at run time,
to make it more portable.

Have you tried it?
# script.sh /path/to/php
--script.sh--
#! $1
echo "This is a test"
--script.sh--
... or something to that effect.

You've misunderstood, what I'm asking, or Im not understanding your
example.
In your example, the path to php, is still hardcoded.
What Im ulitimately trying to achieve, is a script,
that can determine the path to php, where ever it may be...
Thanks

Ah, yeah, my example was just a way to pass the path on to the script -
not determine the path automatically. If you want to determine the path
automatically, the only way I can see that you could do that would be to
run two separate scripts (including the method I used above.)

Something like this:
--script_caller.sh--
$DYNAMICPATH = find / -name php | grep php
script.sh $DYNAMICPATH
--script_caller.sh--
The idea being that the script_caller.sh file would find the path to php
on that system, then pass that path on to the script that will be
executing the php commands.

Now... don't get me wrong. I'm not an expert script writer or anything.
I haven't tested these scripts. However, the logic behind them is still
valid, and should work if properly executed. (with the correct shell
commands, etc)

FreeBSD 4.10 and finding dependant packages

2005-01-03 Thread Jordan Michaels
Greetings,
I'm currently exploring FreeBSD 4.10 in an effort to get the "Emerging
Technologies Bandwidth Manager" (www.etinc.com) set up. I'm pretty
comfortable working in a Linux environment so I thought I'd tackle this
project in FreeBSD because of BSD's reputation for stability and security.

Part of the ETBWMGR's requirements is to have apache installed, which is
normally fine. I used the /stand/sysinstall program to install a basic
version of apache:

# /stand/sysinstall
Configure -> Packages -> www -> apache-1.3.29_3
However, now when I go to install php, I get an error message (Error
code 1) and when I try to remove the check box next to the apache
package, I get a "This package is required by 2 other packages" error
message.

So, my questions is simple: What do I need to do to figure out what
packages require apache to be installed? I've worked with SuSE's YAST
tool and RPM's (and tools that manage RPM's... like YAST), but what's
the BSD way to go about this?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

It's weird, because it was working before, and then I tweaked

cyrus-sasl2-saslauthd, to no avail. Make a make deinstall broke

I don't even know what to suspect. I think it might be a permissions

sound familiar to anyone?
